How to restore back to original GB

After I applied the original GB update, I later found that the GPS was no longer reliable. I then applied the GPS fix, which apparently required modifying the stock recovery. Over the past couple of weeks, I've been receiving prompts that a new update is ready to be installed. From what I understand, I won't be able to install this update since I modified the stock recovery.

I have an appointment scheduled at a Sprint store to have my phone looked at to resolve various problems. I'd like to have the latest software update applied before going to the Sprint store. A link to the XDA forums was posted in the EL30 update thread that is a direct link to the download.

I'm trying to find out what it is I need to do in order to apply the update.

Since your taking it to the store anyways, May not be a bad idea to make a backup, fire up ODIN, and roll it back to full stock. Let it do it's updates back up to el30. You may well find that a lot of your issues are fixed, and if not, than you KNOW it's not a software issue, and Sprint should be able to replace your phone.

Follow the steps provided by Paul627g. I found out that flashing both EC05 (2nd oficial release of Froyo 2.2) and EB13 (1st official release of Froyo 2.2) didnt work out to well for me (ended up bricking phone). So, I had to flash DK28 (Initial android software when phone was release back in Aug 2010 Eclair Android 2.1). This worked for me and then i just did the OTA updates that the phone requested for me to do. Which would be 4 as of now (EB13, EC05, EI22, EL30)

If I have to go all the way back to Eclair then update to FroYo followed by GB, I want to make sure that I'm not going to lose any saved data.

I also want to be sure that by following the steps for restoring a bricked phone (even though the phone is not bricked), that the data will still remain on the phone.

Data will not remain on the phone.. Using Odin to restore/flash to anything wipes the device. SDCARD contents remain untouched, everything else is a loss. Only option is to root and make backups with Titanium or My Back up Root.

When I applied the GPS fix, all applications and the associated data along with contacts all remained on the phone. It was either wait around for Samsung to fix the GPS issue or apply the GPS fix so I could have reliable driving directions when I needed them.

How is it that I am now going to lose everything in order to go back to the way the phone was before applying the GPS update? Can I just manually apply the latest software update?

I'm finally getting around to restoring my phone. The one thing I am not sure of is the references to the "new MTD format." I haven't installed any custom ROMs, but when I applied the GPS fix, I ended up getting the ACS file system on the phone.

The other thing I am not sure of is which firmware version to install. Do I really need to go all the way back to DK28? Can't I just install EC05 and then do the OTA update?

According to the instructions, I have to download drivers. The driver installation program won't install on Windows 7, although I did download the 64 bit version since I have the 64 bit version of Windows 7. When I connect the phone to the computer, Windows recoginizes the phone once I turn on mass storage. When I startup Odin v1.85, I don't initially see anything other than Epic 4G at the top and then empty boxes.

You really don't need to install any drivers on your computer. When you connect your phone to your pc the drivers will automatically install (at least that's what happened to mine). Just make sure your debug is checked and your cable is a high quality cable (the cable that comes with the charger sometimes has issues with Win 7).

To your last question. No, you don't need to go back to Eclair. Just use the EC05 restore. As long as you're on stock you should be fine.

The new EL30 tar is out now and in the link "how to restore a bricked phone," so you don't need to go all the way back to anything but EL30. Make a Titanium back up first then I would install your apps from Titanium and restore app + data. I like to use Titanium to make a zip of itself (under the menu " create an update.zip" then choose "Titanium backup" as the name). That way, instead of reinstalling Titanium from the market, I install my backup and run all the app restores from there.

I'm downloading the EL30 tar file, but it's being saved with an extra .tar extension. Do I keep the file name as is or do I remove the extra file extension?

I noticed others saying this too... Try it with or without, it should run one way or the other, someone just messed up on the extension.

I finally went ahead and attempted to restore GB, but it did not work. I used Odin3 v1.85 and downloaded the SPH-D700-EL30-8Gb-REL.tar.tar file. I clicked the PDA button and loaded this file. I ensured the only thing checked was auto reboot. The process failed, but there is no error message.

The video in the thread of how to restore a bricked phone has different instructions such as downloading a .bin file and a .pit file.

So, what happened? Why did this fail? I now have no data connection. I don't know if the failed restore had something to do with the loss of a data signal, or if there is a carrier outage.

I don't know if restore is the term I should be using. In order to fix the GPS, I had to install a custom recovery. Now what I am trying to do is get the stock recovery file system back on the phone so that I can install the software update -- unless I can install it with the custom recovery.
