[How-To] Root, Custom Recovery, NANDroid Backup

I'm getting ready to flash the custom rom onto my phone and would like to move my backup off of my sdcard and onto my computer's hard drive. Am I correct that this Custom Recovery places it's backup in a folder called clockworkmod?

Also, as another person noted, the date/time stamp of the backup is set in the year 1980. But I'm supposing that makes since as the phone hasn't acquired a tower signal when it's only booted into the Custom Recovery. Just thought I'd mention it.

Yes, custom recovery places it's backup in a folder called clockworkmod. The date/time stamp set to 1980 is a flaw in the recovery program. It will not affect function of the recovery or the backup.

As far as I know, yes.

Thank you very much. I will be doing this later this evening.
I follow all three tutorials one after another, respectively?
Just Root, Recovery, and NANDroid backup, correct?

EDIT: I apologize for my noob-ness.

Recovery
STOP
It is very very important you read THIS LINK before continuing.
STOP

IMPORTANT - You will want to turn swype off for this portion, trust me. Open any field you normally type text into such as a text message and long press in the input field. A menu will ask you to select an input method, you want android.

1) On your computer, download Flash_Image.zip.
2) On your computer, Download VM701_recovery.img
3) Connect your phone to your computer using the USB cable, pull down notification status bar and select "mount storage" (or similar verbiage)
4) On your computer, using 7zip, winzip, winrar or whatever tool you want, take the file "flash_image" out of flash_image.zip that you downloaded in step 1, and place "flash_image" on the root of your phones SD card
IMPORTANT Do not just drag and drop flash_image.zip onto your sd card. The file you are moving is named flash_image, not flash_image.zip
5) Drag and drop VM701_recovery.img which you downloaded in step 2, onto the root of your SD card.
IMPORTANT This is a .img file so drag and drop it onto the SD. No need to use 7zip or any other tool to open it.
6) Unmount your SDcard from your PC and then you can unplug the phone from the PC
7) Open android terminal emulator you downloaded above and type su [press enter] You should now have a popup asking you to grant the terminal superuser permission, select "always allow"
8) After granting permission you may now have a spacing issue in the emulator so please close it by doing Menu > Reset Term.
9) Reopen the emulator and proceed with the following ....
IMPORTANT - These lines are very specific. If you make a spelling mistake, you'll get an error. If you miss a space, you'll get an error. If you do not enter them EXACTLY as shown below, you'll get an error. Period. If you get an error, you've made a mistake. Try retyping the line you got an error on.

----press enter after each line-----
su
mount -o remount, rw /system
cp /sdcard/flash_image /system/bin
cd /system/bin
chmod 777 flash_image
flash_image recovery /sdcard/VM701_recovery.img
reboot recovery

You navigate the recovery as follows:
Volume button up - Move cursor up
Volume button down - Move cursor down
Back button - Go back to the previous screen
Camera button - select

[TIP]
Once you have a custom recovery, there are several options for accessing it including but not limited to:
  • Download an app from the market such as quick boot (free)
  • The old fashioned way of using ADB or terminal emulator (reboot recovery)
  • With the phone powered off, press and hold down the volume down button and the power button. Don't release the button until you're at the custom recovery.
[/TIP]

KSmithInNY, I rooted my phone per your instructions, worked 1st time.

I am a little lost on the steps to custom recovery. Maybe I am doing something different.

When I plug my phone into my USB I get 2 options - "Charge Only" and "Mass Storage". I look @ the pull the notification status bar and don't see any other options.

Am I missing something?

This might be fun if I am already messed up on the 1st step.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

You want to select "Mass Storage". This will allow you to copy file from your computer to your phone's sdcard. That is what step 3 in the instructions is telling you to do. Once you select "Mass Storage" a screen should pop up on your computer showing the contents of your phone's sdcard. Continue following the instructions with step 4.

I believe I did everything correctly till I get to a certain point.

When inputting "flash_image recovery /sdcard/VM701_recovery.img" I get the following; error opening flash_image recovery /sdcard/VM701_recovery.img: No such file or directory"

Now what am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Make sure you copied the flash_image file and the VM701_recovery.img file to your sdcard. Make sure to unmount the sdcard from your computer. Also make sure you type the commands correctly. If you get an error message, try the command again.

I thought I copied the files correctly, maybe I didn't. As for unmounting the card, I don't remember doing that. I am completely stuck on the custom recovery part.

One strange thing since I rooted is; my power off. The phone will not power off. When I press the power button, I get the screen asking me if I want to "Power off", I choose the option to power it off, your phone will shut down, I push "OK" I get the virgin mobile sound and display and vibrate, then I get the logo again and the phone comes right back on. It acts like its just rebooting itself. Why?

This has happened since I rooted my phone. I have the stock ROM.

The crazy thing about the power off issue is this; if I have it plugged into the charger and I press "Power Off" it will start shutting down like I originally mentioned, then the LG logo shows back up like its going to start. If I press the power button when I see the LG logo it will turn off and the battery icon will show up to show its charging. This doesn't work all the time, just some times.

Who knows?

Thanks.

I'm having a very big problem I've spent all day trying to root my lg-l55c and I'm constently getting stuck at the daemond part it won't go no further. I have xp with 1gig of ram I'm I being to impatient should I just let it sit for awhile I have it on charge only and debugging on. What am I missing? Plz help this noob lol

Ok so theres SDK's, and JDK's, and drivers and ..... ahhhhhhhh!!!!! lol all this stuff to know! Don't worry, when it's laid out in an easy to read way, and you actually take the time to read it (<-- Key), this is all fairly simple.

Requirements:
-Make sure you have a good charge on your phone. I suggest starting with a full charge.
-From the home screen of your phone press Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > check mark "USB debugging". This is necessary to root the phone.
-You need to download Android Terminal Emulator from the market (free)

Instructions:
Root
1) On your computer, download and install THESE DRIVERS on your PC
2) On your computer, download LG_Esteem_Root.zip.
3) On your computer, make a folder right on your desktop and name it "fun" or anything you want.
4) On your computer, using 7zip, winzip, winrar or whatever tool you want, take the contents out of Lg_Esteem_Root.zip that you downloaded in step 2, and place those contents into your "fun" folder you created in step 3.
5) Plug your USB cable into the computer and then into your phone.
6) Assuming you followed instructions and enabled USB debugging, you should see an icon in your notification status bar on your phone that says "USB Debugging". Pull down notification status bar and select "charge only"
7) Inside of the "fun" folder, double click a file called run.bat ...

You should see the following on your computer screen:
