[How To] Root Galaxy S4

Alright, my workplace just got rid of the wi-fi today without telling anyone... So, I'm frantically trying to hack into my Samsung Galaxy S4 to get the hotspot activated. When I did this on my preivious Driod Bionic, I just had to root the phone and use the Superuser app to change around some of the settings to get it. This time, I have no idea how to get the hotspot after I completed the root. Can anyone help?

Fortunately for you my friend you can do wifi hotspot without rooting your phone and its very simple. download foxfi from google play, and its gonna ask you to download PdaNet+ as well, download both install them and there you have it. free wifi hot spot from your phone without paying for it.
Now Foxfi is a trial version and will get disconnected every 10 minutes and you have to buy the full version (Foxfi key) to used it unlimited. Fortunately for you again my friend, you have me to help with that. in google play you have to pay for the key but if you google FoxFi Key download it and install it and there you have it, FoxFi with PdaNet+ activated, by the way you have to enable the UNKNOWN SOURCES from your device administration from the security section in the settings to allow you to install apps from outside of google play.

Hi, I'm thinking about rooting my AT&T Galaxy S4. I'm a "noob" when it comes to anything root-wise. (I have an I337 if that matters?) I would really like to flash a stock android type ROM and I'm not sure how, nor am I sure if I should use Cyanogenmod or something else... If anybody could help, that would be great. Or maybe provide me with a link on how to flash the specific ROM? Any help really is appreciated, and please bear with me if somebody has already asked this. :)

In choosing the rom that you want you will have to sift thru to see the right layout and specs for what you want.

Need help guys been trying to root all day and have not had any luck. Everytime I do it I get successful then when I check my super user it says Superuser binary must be updated or devise not rooted on other apps. Help me please I used casual root, and the motochopper method still no luck.

Have you tried chainfire cf-root?

Hi guys,

I'm new to the whole rooting thing. Always been too scared I would brick my phone.

Over the weekend I had a go. I ran cf auto root through Odin then installed cwm through Odin. I then tried to flash a Google edition ROM.

Each attempted flash would appear successful and after rebooting would show a boot screen saying 'Samsung galaxy s4 i9505'. It would stay on this screen for at least 10 minutes. Thinking it failed I would pull the battery and restore my backup from cwm. I repeated this process about 5 times before giving up.

Later I installed root checker from the play store and it said I wasn't even rooted. Tried running cf auto root twice more to no avail.

My question is ? did flashing the ROM not work because I didn't wait long enough on the boot screen or was it because cf auto root didn't give me root?

Does it work on GT-I9500? Its not modded by any service provider. It is the Brazilian version Exynos octa Core

Wait! When I click on the link to get the Samsung drivers, it references the AT+T Galaxy S4 only. Is this rooting method actually doable for the Verizon version? I don't have my S4 yet but should have within a week and just want to be rooted. And why can't TIBU apps only without any data not be restored from say a Droid Razr Maxx to the S4? I don't understand that part. Thanks.

Hello, I admit I'm rather new to the forums here and have searched on google for an answer to my problem but haven't had any luck. Hopefully with all of the tech-savvy individuals on this forum someone knows an answer to my problem.

I tried rooting my phone following the video and when I used motochopper everything went smoothly until the past part where I got a message that said.

[ * ] Rooting phone. . .
[+] This may take a few minutes.
[-] Failure.
[*] Cleaning up...
[*] Exploit complete. Press enter to reboot and exit

The "failure" part is what threw me off. I'm using a galaxy s4

model SAMSUNG-SGH-1337
Android Version 4.2.2
Baseband 1337UCUAMF3

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, guys :)

You can't root MF3 using motochopper. You need to do it this way. But remember that their is no recovery for this and you can't flash any rom's yet.
How to Root for Verizon Galaxy S4 on Build VRUAME7 or AT&T Galaxy S4 on MF3!

For those of you looking for root for Verizon Galaxy S4 on build VRUAME7, it is now available.

UPDATE: This root method also has been verified to work with AT&T Galaxy S4 on MF3!

It involves an external microSD card that must be formatted in exFat format (you can do this easily on Windows by right-clicking and selecting format, you should be able to choose exFat as for format type), download and unzip the script, then copy all the files to your microSD card.

Download root script for VRUAME7 (Verizon)

Download root script for MF3 (AT&T)

Next, go ahead and download Terminal Emulator app from Play Store, open and type:

cd /mnt/extSdCard
./pwn
./script.sh

Once that?s done, simply download/install SuperSU from the Play Store, let it replace the Superuser app and also update the binaries. Reboot and you should have root!

Clarifying question here. If the SD is already exFat, do I need to wipe it so only the new scripts are on it?

Or can I leave my cap on it and just add the scripts?

Would rather not have to buy or scrounge a card for this.

SIDE QUESTION: I really want to ditch the Verizon bloatware on my new S4. Most of this bloat are normal apps flagged as System Apps.
Is rooting the only way to clear the system flag so I can then uninstall them like normal?

I don't have experience with rooting but I have side loaded and debugged numerous HP TouchPads with CM9 and am fairly familiar with Terminal and su.

If the sd card is already formatted I would assume you could just proceed but never, ever uninstall anything. Just get something like Titanium Backup to freeze them. I know from first hand experience when I uninstalled everything under the sun because I "thought" I would never need them again and found out I uninstalled something I needed and was stuck.

I failed rooting VRUAME7 (Verizon) because I kept getting a 'too many files open' error - weird, I know. Well, then I couldn't stop the latest OTA that changed my build to VRUDMI1. Has an exploit been found for this yet? Also, back when I had a Droid 1 I did all sorts of stuff and even bricked it once but managed to flash a sbf file to recover. Is there not any way to do some sort of very low level flash like that to go backwards to a non-locked bootloader? There must be a way to do this if one is willing to take the risk, right?
