[How-To] Root LG Optimus S

When I put ./ in front of adb push I get: ./adb: not found. If I put just adb push "etc" I get adb:Permission Denied. Any ideas? I appreciate your help with this. Maybe it's a permissions thing but I'm administrator on my mac so I don't know what's up with that. Thoughts?

Hmm...I was getting adb:Permission Denied when I tried the regular commands (ie "adb push ...") and I found out that when I aded "./" to the front of those commands, I was able to get it to work.

Did you make sure you're in the correct directory in Terminal and that you have the SDK copied to an easy-to-find location?

ok, i think i finally got it rooted with a custom recovery...my only problem left is with the superuser app....it comes up with this error:

an error occurred and su was not updated. A zip file has been placed on your sdcard. please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary.

so, i go into recovery and won't install. In fact, I even checked the file and it was empty....so i'm stumped :/

I got it rooted. Only I skipped one step and spaced rebooting into recovery which after I forced it to VD blew out the rooting (I'm guessing this is the case since Superuser isn't on there and the recovery I supposedly flashed (Xiona CWMA custom recovery) doesn't show up in recovery... in fact it's blank... SO I'm guessing I have v9's recovery with VD's ROM... which brings up a few questions:

1. Do you have the newer Optimus S that has the new drivers so v9 is blank? If so, what recovery are you using? I heard recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.6-ov-20110220 works...

2. After you have it rooted, did you just reboot into recovery, nand, and flash a new ROM? If so, which ROM? I'm thinking ThundeROM.

Again, thanks for being the responsive sounding board. The Hero, G1, and EVO were so darn easy, this thing is so darn complicated. :) But I like a challenge and that moment where you're like "will this brick... guess we'll find out!"

If your custom recovery is CWMA, you need to follow part 5 in this post
http://forum.androidcentral.com/lg-...-guide-rooting-software-version-ls670zvd.html

Replace steps 1&2 with
1) Power down
2) Home + Vol- + Power (hold until recovery shows up)

I don't know if you are asking a question or answering a question.

CWMA 1.2518.5 will have the blank display problem.

CWMA 1.2518.4 does not have the blank display problem. I suggest you use CWMA 1.2518.4. It is in the archive link at the bottom of the first post in the CWMA thread.

Sorry about the last post... it was in reply to pcubed's post above.

So here's my issue. I reverted to v9, rooted, flashed CWMA 1.2518.5 then force flashed to VD. My recovery is still blank but I don't think I'm rooted anymore because SU isn't on the phone. So my question is, do I have the V9 recovery or do I have the custom recovery? Is there a way to tell? Would LG Updater flash a new recovery?

I'm thinking I'm going to try to force flash back to v9, go through the rooting instructions again, and then flash CWMA 1.218.4 and see if I can get it to work.

I get an error stated that bin does not exist when entering the first line of the instructions. What am i missing?

when you do adb shell, if your prompt is "$" then you have stock recovery.

if it is "#" then you have custom recovery.

If you have a "#" prompt somewhere, then it is trivial to put "su" back.

Thanks. That helps. At this point I'm kind of at my wits end. I have reverted back to V9, ran the steps for rageagainsthecage, flashed the custom recovery, & rebooted recovery. All seemingly successful. However, my recovery is still blank, despite flashing CWMA 1.218.4. I then reboot the phone, go back to my terminal and ./adb shell and then I get the "$" and so I try to su and I get permission denied. So I'm stumped. Any thoughts? Maybe I need to try a different method?

I did notice when I rebooted after leaving recovery that the phone made a noise as though I were getting a phone call... some sort of telephone type ringtone. Maybe this helps with the solution?

Is there a way to flash the recovery for VC so I can try the rooting to VC method?

Or perhaps I need to do a blind z4root on V9?

Do not, I repeat DO NOT flash any stock recovery kernel other than V9.

Here's what I think you should do. This is a general overview so you will need to know what you're doing :p
1) Revert to V9
2) Root using z4root. If you have the new LCD panel, you can use Android Screencast to view the screen but you can't control Android using it until you're rooted. Also, it requires that ADB be in your PATH variable.
3) Install/Flash Xionia CWMA v1.2518.4
4) Use the LG update tool to go all the way up to VD because VC sucks monkey nuts IMO
5) Follow Part 5 of the LS670ZVD root guide

If your recovery is still blank, you didn't flash CWMA 1.2518.4 correctly.

If your adb shell has $, then you don't have a custom recovery.

BTW CWMA 1.2518.6 just got released, which also fixes the LCD problem.

Well - with the firmware push this morning which killed my quick settings / hotspot ability, I guess I am going to have to attempt a phone root.

I see so many different options and so many different ways people say "this is best, that is best" and I also see things like "if you have this, don't do that" and I"m unsure what I am suppose to do next.

And, with the rapid changes, is any of the rooting stuff effective if I already got hit with this firmware update ?

Does anyone know why I keep getting error message when doing command on the LG Optimus S

adb push autostart.sh /data/opt/autostart.sh
adb push u2nl /system/bin/u2nl
adb shell chmod 0777 /data/opt/autostart.sh
adb shell chmod 0777 /system/bin/u2nl

Thanks,

You can start by posting what the error message actually says.

Hey guys, i am attempting to root my lg optimus s, i downloaded everything, i open up cmd, and then go away entering the commands, all is well until i get to the ./rageagainstthecage it completes this proccess successfully and my phone disconnects twice but when i go to type abd shell it pops up with $ sign, i have repeated proccess at least 15 times now. I'm not sure what to do.

What software version do you have?
