[How-To] Root LG Optimus S

successful root using OS X

Hey Guys,

Just a heads up - I was able to root the LG Optimus One on my Mac OS X without any issue at all. I simply downloaded the mac version of the SDK and then used the following command:
"export PATH=${PATH}:<your_sdk_dir>/tools"
to get adb to work as prescribed on the install page.

I then went through the steps in the OP to root. I needed to use the superuser/titanium combo to get things working. Also, my phone does not have access to data/wifi at the moment, so I installed the necessary apps via the "adb install" command.

Thanks again for the awesome teamwork on this one! Fixed up my memory settings, but not sure what else to do with my phone's newfound ROOTED status. My phone has a lot of crappy optus stuff built into the rom and I would love to swap this out with something that is much more streamlined for performance and a few, select full screen widgets.

Any advice on what to do with my rooted phone?

Cheerio!

LG has an update for this phone. You must get the update via LG's tool, it's not available as an OTA. Also LG has not seen fit to provide a changelog with the update (which IMHO indicates bad vibes). Can anyone confirm if they were able to root on a version of the software thats later than LS670ZV8?

To check your software version go to Menu > Settings > about phone - SW Version. This root method is confirmed on LS670ZV6 and LS670ZV8. I am unsure of what the new update SW version number is.

Thanks.

For those having trouble, I too was getting $. I found that unplugging the USB, opening task manager, killing all adb.exe tasks, then plugging the USB back in worked.

Unplug the USB after rageagainstthecage disconnects your adb session.

FYI, i tried the z4root and it definitely works. removed stock launcher and replaced with the one without sprint id, removed voicemail battery killer also.

Ok,

Why would I no longer be able to do an ADB Remount on my device? Says access denied but I can still run all my apps that require root permission.

Is there a way to prevent it from accepting OTA updates if you are rooted?

Just don't accept it. There's a way but right now I can't think of what it is. (care to chime in ksmith?)

in adb shell type su and look at your phone and grant it super user permission. what happens?

Will I be able to return the phone once I've rooted? If not, how do you unroot?

It depends on how hard they look when you return it. Technically you aren't supposed to be able to. As for unrooting and returning to stock I think that's being worked on, but isn't ready yet. Don't quote me on that, though.

I haven't updated, according to the mod in the LG forums there is an issue with their update software on windows (keeps downloading the drivers instead of the update). No word yet on when it will be pushed out OTA.

Ok. If you want to root or are rooted don't take the update. It could possibly break root.

Give it some time and the update will be made available for rooted users through a custom ROM. Have some patience because the phone is new and development has just begun.

Can you post a full howto guide on how to completely remove SprintID?

Edit: as for the update, I would have tried it but it seems it was pulled from the LG system. I can see the update listed in a google cache but current search doesn't have LGLS670 at all.

Thanks. This doesn't fully remove SprintID though. The ID icon is still in the Settings menu. And it would probably still prompt to select an ID if I cleared /data and /cache. I was interested if there was a FULL removal of SprintID.

You will have to wait for a custom ROM for that. I need to do the SprintID Launcher button removal tonight (since I still can't get the drivers at work).

Finally got around to trying su in a standard adb shell, asked me to grant it permission. Did that,.adb remount still doesn't work.
