[How-To] Root LG Optimus S

Howdy all,

Brand new to the rooting scene but my wife has the Optimus S and I'd really like to get the Wifi Tether thing working so here I am.

Just wanted to see if the instructions in the OP are still the best ones to use or if there have been any updates buried in this thread I need to know about.

Like I said, Wifi Tether is the only thing I really want to do and since she's not a power user, there's nothing else I need to do, but are there other recommended settings to change to just make the phone experience more enjoyable?

Thanks!

I have an Optimus One P500 (not branded), software V10b-OCT-05-2010. I would like to know if I could use the methods above to root this phone.

Depending on what version of the SDK you have the path for adb might have changed. I can't remember exactly where to, though, but once you find that out everything else is exactly the same.

You can try it. Worst thing that'll happen is it doesn't work. I'm pretty sure it does, though.

Im with the other guy. I get nothing but "$" every time. Haven't gotten the "#" yet after 4 trys. Can anyone help.

EDIT

Got it working...had to restart the computer and that seemed to do it.

first time rooting an android phone, worked on the first try...only thing was, my adb was in the platform-tools folder, not the tools folder, took me 30 minutes to realize, but after that i was ok. thanks. love the set cpu, increased battery life 200%.

yeah, well i have continued trying since that last post,to no avail

it will simply spit back $ not #

i waited 15min once...
so im going to either need some advice or z4root is the only way to go with a su command

i mean i would do the long way~but its not working so lolz
i rooted a palm pre is that counts for anything~but frankly rooting the phone is the ultimate goal(to add roms and go from there)

so heres my issue
after the first go through with adb shell and after typing ./rageagainstthecage i get a nice mash of wanting to donate and all that fun stuff
then it says restarting adb server logon to your desktop?....so its asking to logout of my windows session then back in?...ummmm its inspecific so i have no idea what it want
regardless i let it sit for a good 10-15mins then came back(at this point it had re-directed itself back to the start C:\android\platform-tools
hi5 good progress right?
apparently not, i typed in adb shell its response?
$
....fffffffffffffffffff
i tried continuing cause what the heck why not try lol, nada
su is permission denied
so is adb(just adb while in adb shell)

if anyone can help me that would be stellar~if not point me in the right direction for z4root and .apk file installation
(i think its usbmode>drag and drop it in downloads folder>get a file manager app?>happy face ur phones rooted)though im sure by file manager, you mean a 3rd party program,(a name would be of the awesome<.<)

anyways thanks for any help you guys can provide :D
im stuck in the mud-.-

Right after you finish the ./rageagainstthecage step get ready to type in adb shell after the phone reboots ONCE (if you wait until after the second time it won't work), I think this may be the new issue with v9 and should be added to the OP.

I do not think the phone it self reboots, but the adb server cycles twice, which is where you need to get in between (the two adb server recycles).

I just received my Optimus S and am trying to root per following the OP. I try to adb shell before the 2nd notification sound but it's just not possible. It just says error: device not found until after the 2nd notification sound. After the 2nd notification sound I can adb shell again, but obviously reports $ back. Do I have a newer version that has been patched?

*****Well forget what I just said, gave it one more go after I posted this and it spat out a # . *****

If anyone has problems with the timing on this part; I just restarted my computer and the first time I tried it worked.

Thank you

Thank you for the instructions. It was frustrating and it took several tries (I lost count). However, like most people, I stuck with it and remained patient and it finally worked! Thanks again.

First off, a huge thank you to KSmith and all the others who have devoted their time in here. I just successfully rooted my optimus s for the first time thanks to this great information!! It wasn't without some initial challenges though. First, it looks like ADB no longer comes with the Android SDK. It's not in tools or platform-tools so this was throwing me off at first. I ended up moving over to Ubuntu and following some of the links that have been posted to get ADB up and running and it was smooth sailing from there.

I just got my phone today and I've been trying to root it for the past 2 hours or so following the instructions here (step by step and I've read through most of the thread) and using z4root with no luck. Could Sprint have killed rooting on this phone? I guess I'll try again tomorrow because I'm getting really frustrated and have an angry wife.

Try ADB

I would learn adb, as it is good to know, especially if/when you get yourself into a sticky situation with your phone modding. Follow the directions posted in this forum about rooting, copy and paste the commands if needed.

Although the above post states that adb is not included in platform-tools, it is indeed located there, in the current Windows distribution. Remember, after running the rageagainstthecage exploit, be ready to adb shell your phone, as the adb server cycles twice. Type 'adb shell', after you hear the it cycle the first time. You should then be presented with a #, not a $.

Drop the custom recovery on the phone (again copy and paste, and follow directions to a T), and make a nandroid backup. Then mod away.

And just to add to simon's comment, I just rooted my optimus about 2 days ago and at first i tried z4root with no luck. I ended up just doing adb shell manually and after 2 or 3 tries i got a #. If your scared you will mess up dont be, Its really easy and there is also i youtube video on how to do it as well.

Also if your not familiar with linux at all its better to learn it now with the guides here, especially since you could end up with a $300 dollar paperweight without a clue what your doing. not a good situation to be in since rooting does void the warranty.

I was following the instructions to a T (including trying to wait for 15 minutes and trying to type "adb shell" between cycles after running rageinthecage) and was having absolutely no luck. Rooting through adb looked simple compared to setting up my arch linux installation. In the end, I got the phone to root using z4root and while I wish I had gotten it to work using adb shell, it wasn't worth the headache to me.

At least you tried, which means you get how it is SUPPOSED to work. IMO, familiarizing yourself with the tools is the primary purpose for doing it the long way.

Or perhaps it didn't root. I have Superuser and Titanium Backup working on the phone but I still get a "$" in adb shell and it doesn't ask for superuser permission when connected to my PC. Frustrating!

when your in adb shell and waiting for the $ or # sign, when the phone cycles does the phone and the computer both make the usb connected sound? i had to cut off usb debugging and then cut it back on and it worked for me. but that was doing it manually.....

EDIT: what KSmithInNY said....forgot about that as im sitting here trying to think of steps in my head...lol sorry

it wont ask for permission until you change to SU

adb shell [enter]
$ su [enter] (look at phone right when you hit enter and select "always allow")
