How to Root

sorry, heres the dir you asked for

screenshotfailedroot3.jpg

Ok go into fascinateRoot directory and run the part1.bat

ok, so after it reboots the phone, what next? run part 2? the 1-click keeps asking if i waited 2 min, then restarts the phone...

went ahead and ran part 2 and part three manually, don't know if it's supposed to do that automatically or not. anyway, i have the superuser icon, so i guess that means i have root!!

Well luckily part3 wont do anything wrong but if part2 goes through then there is no need to run part 3 because it gets called inside part2

I ran step 1-3 successfully and my phone restarted with the superuser icon in the applications menu. Is it complete, or what steps do I need to take to complete it?

Does hard reset remove root?

Anynody know if a factory reset will remove the root? Just planning for the 2.2 release.... figuring i'll wipe the phone before i update and wondering if I will need to re-root the phone afterwards.

I was going to wait until after Froyo to root, just to avoid any problems, but the trick for getting rid of Bing looks so simple that I'm having a hard time holding off. But before I decide to take the plunge, I have a couple of quick questions:

1) If I'm rooting just to get unwanted stuff off the phone (bloatware, Bing, etc.), is it safe to unroot once I'm done making changes? Or does the phone need to stay rooted as long as it's running in a non-stock configuration? (I don't suppose there's really any risk in staying rooted, but I don't like the idea of running as a superuser if I don't have to.)

2) Is it correct to assume that *any* change I make needs to be undoable, just in case the phone has to be fully stock to receive the OTA Froyo update? I'm guessing that would mean restoring the names of any renamed files, and putting any other files back where they came from. Is that basically the right process for getting back to stock? That suggests that one needs to keep very careful records of every change...

hey dirk having some problems, i downloaded the samsung drivers extracted them and then installed them, ran step one of the root after i extracted it to C:\fascinate\ got to the push any button, and it said error device not found push any button to continue, usb debugging is on i have no syncs or anything like that on, stay awake is on, i just dont know what i did wrong. also if i wait 2 - 3 minutes, then press space after it says error device not found it asks me to put a disk in for CDC Abstract Control Model (ACM) , and then says restarting your phone, and closes out and nothing happens. should i run step two and ignore this or what i'm totally lost.

I'm trying to remove root from my phone but I'm running into some problems...
Once I get to the
rm /system/app/Superuser.apk
line, mid-way while typing it, it throws up PERMISSION DENIED right where I'm typing. Not exactly sure what to do at this point...
Any suggestions? I really just want my phone to go back to exactly the way it was when I bought it...

i just got my phone monday (my first android phone!) and followed the instructions and rooted it with ease today. just wanted to say thanks, and hi (since i'm new).

Not really because we have odin and a stock rom we can actually flash back to stock in about a minute

Do you have the superuser app installed on there?
If you don't see it then run from part one again after restarting youre phone

Help? Ok, I think I managed to root my device. Superuser shows up in the Applications, but there is nothing in it. I see the Apps/Logs/Settings tabs, but there is nothing in there. Is that all there is? Yes, I am an Android newb. I came from BB and had installed OS leaks on both versions of my Storm, but I think I might have jumped to far into the deep end with this one. I tried removing the root, but feel that I might not be doing it right. I've reread the directions over and over, and I'll be honest, "This thing reads like stereo instructions." I'm probably doing something wrong in ADB. Any help, which I see you've doled out plenty to begin with, and all of it is appreciated, but if you've got any more patience and help, I would gladly take some. Thanks in advance.

There is nothing in the superuser app because you have not used a root app yet. To test if your at a computer then just type
adb shell
su
If you fail to access adb ur in the wrong directory but theres an easier method go to android market and download wireless tething or some other root app. Just search root in market. When you run the app you should see at some point it will ask you for Superuser permissions this means you have root :)
