Wow I can't believe I finally have experienced success!!! Thanks, the instructions were awesome, in the end, it was me who was doing a few things wrong. My benchmark now blows other phones out of the water too!

Ok, so I hit a few keys by mistake while waiting for adb connection to restart. Its been about 5 mins and hasn't reset yet. Should I start over?
$_ is the current command.

**I started the commands over from scratch and it freezes now at
adb push C:\fascinate\su /sdcard/su. Any ideas?

Thanks

If ANY of you get stuck after the adb connection will be reset screen, what you can do is hardboot your phone back up, then go back into settings>applications>development and make sure you CHECK "stay awake" while connected.

Then go back into terminal, mount back into the phone by going back to here:

$ ./adb shell
$ cd /data/local/tmp
$ chmod 0755 rage.bin
$ ./rage.bin

and run the rage. you don't need to push the files cuz you've already done that. just continue from there.

I posted this elsewhere, but it really belongs here...

Should I worry about changing the password on the su, to avoid the "Rick-Roll" episode mentioned in the "Should I root my phone?" article?

Thanks much... in 1 day, I've gone from a totally illiterate smartphone user, to... well, less illiterate one because of these blogs. (It's my first phone in 7-8 years.. yes, no kidding... there are still people out there without a cell phone.. in my area, they're down to 4)

Well, finally had time to do the root process and it was a success. Your instructions were spot on Diirk. Awesome job for us newbies to Android. One question, can you point me to which post explains how to "unroot"? Also, I must be half asleep still (long night last night), but how do you get Titanium Backup to backup ALL files in one shot? I feel like an idiot, but I'm finding myself clicking each and every file to back them up individually. Thanks folks, you all rock.

@badmf222
1 page back, from Diirk again... as for Titanium Backup, I found that clicking on the menu button, once in the application, will give you a Batch option. There, you can select the sort of backups you want to do... but I'm a newbie too, so there might be other ways.

I will go ahead and update the tutorial to have this at the bottom for clarification. I hope it will not confuse anyone

First time rooter here. This is driving me bonkers. I have my fascinate device recognized, but I get the "cannot stat" error after i try the first push command. I believe it is because I have not downloaded the fascinate.rar files, but when I go to download it/unzip it it is just ONE file listed as "fascinate.rar".

It is supposed to be multiple files (4 I believe) right? Can someone help me out with this?

Thanks!

For those of you who read this, and are thinking about sending me a PM with rooting questions - and I mean this is the nicest way possible - please post your questions in the forums. I personally, don't have time to provide personal one-on-one assistance. If you have a question, please post it here. Answering your questions here benefits everyone, and there are way smarter people here than myself. In fact, Dirrk started this whole thing ;)

Hey Dirrk Can you please do a detailed step by step video on how to root the Samsung Fascinate?? Those of us unfamiliar with rooting would really appreciate this!

I do not own a digital camera because I have a phone to do that. That said phone is the one I would be rooting. I do have my old droid that I could do but I believe the directions are clear enough. I think you should just give it a go and we can help you figure it out. It is nothing more than downloading a an installing software and then copying commands. I unfortunately think it is harder to follow video instructions than these because of the pictures it is extremely simple. 100s of people have done this without a problem and 100s have done this with a few hiccups where THEY didnt follow the directions given. They caught there mistakes and fixed it without needing any help. Now there are the cases where people are having problems with the ./rage.bin but even if I made a video of it I do not think it would help anyone out because the time it takes on one phone may be different for the time it takes on another. IMHO if you are having trouble following these instructions then it might be wise for you not to root because its supposed to be for advanced users only. Since android is so popular it has almost become the norm for people to root but you must realize you are dealing with a little touch screen linux computer and that in one command you could ruin your phone forever. If you can follow the guide all the way up to downloading the .rar files then your pretty much done because the rest is just idiot proof copy & paste. If you get stuck at any part please post on here and I will try to help you out as I have done for everyone else but simply asking me to make it easier or hold your hand while doing it without trying it yourself is not something I am willing to do.

Edit: For reasons of boredom at work, I did add numbered steps and put in extra comments just for you. So hope that helps let me know how it goes.

Download winrar its free and it will un zip those files for you. And are you sure your device is recognized did you type adb devices?

I must say, I was surprised how patient you guys were... I actually felt like writing such comment. Had you done a video, people would have asked for an HD version so they could see better. These ARE pretty straight forward steps.

Now that I've sucked up enough, would anybody answer my question about the su password :)

Ok next question. I finished the commands all the way down to "Success". I rebooted my phone. How do I tell if it worked? How do I delete these annoying apps now? Everything seems the same.

I did not answer the question because I do not know the answer. I personally would not even attempt to change the root password even if there is one. Just my two cents.

ok... I was just following some of the recommendations highlighted in the mentioned article. But if you guys haven't bothered, then I feel more comfortable leaving it as is.

Thanks.

Download an app that requires root access and see if it works. You should also see Superuser app in your app list. To remove those unwanted apps you should download Root Explorer.
