How to Root

Just attempted this on my new Fascinate, because even though I got Google Search installed, the fact that Bing was still asserting itself in various ways really bugged me. The first time I tried to run rage.bin, my phone decided to freeze up for some reason (I guess when they say don't type anything after that, they really mean it). Fearing the worst, I did a battery pull, and thankfully the phone booted back up just fine. I repeated the ./rage.bin command, and this time it was successful. Everything else completed successfully, and I am now the happy owner of a rooted Fascinate, with Bing and several other useless apps eliminated.

Just a quick note, in addition to the list of apps to rename earlier in this thread, I renamed the vnav_4.7.0...apk, which is VZ Navigator.

I went through the same issues as you did, ivorucruncher... was quite happy to see everything coming back to normal when I rebooted. Something I found elsewhere, instead of pulling the battery, you can just hold the Volume Up and Power buttons for 5 seconds and the device will reboot.

Ah, thanks for the tip. Btw, am I the only one that noticed that the Fascinate has a built-in Adobe Flash player app? It's not the full 10.1 Flash (Hulu.com doesn't work), but I've verified that both the built-in browser and xScope have at least partial Flash functionality on websites. I suppose this is something similar to HTC's Flash Lite, but it works better that HTC's version, because HTC's Flash Lite only works in the HTC browser, not in any third party browsers. I don't remember hearing about these Galaxy S phones having any Flash functionality at all, so this is QUITE a pleasant surprise.

so I tried RyanZA's one-click-lag-fix tool which includes a root option in the app. I run it and it says to reboot into recovery console and then select 'apply sdcard:update.zip'... I rebooted into recover console and selected that option but it says it failed with "signature not recognized"...

any ideas on this? I'm able to reboot the device normally and obviously don't have root yet but just wondering what's missing. Maybe this just doesn't work on a fascinate?

You are missing the "update.zip" file. Some of the other Galaxy phones can be rooted using this method. The Fascinate doesn't have a workable update.zip to root with..... yet. I'm sure one of the Android brilliant minds will have one soon.

Need some help here... I just attempted to root my phone using a mac and was able to get all the way to the end until I got this:

177:tools Chris$ adb install superuser.apk
-bash: adb: command not found

what am I doing wrong? Also, I rebooted the phone so now does that mean I have to do it all over again?

you need to type ./adb install Superuser.apk

Meaning, when you plug the Fascinate into your computer, do not swipe the notification panel downward and select the option to mount your SD card.

I just would like to thank you for this info. it took a good while until i got everything right but it did work on my fascinate. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Dirrk. Really good write up. Now as soon as I get a few hours Im going to take the plunge and do it. I used to do this kind of stuff with the BB's all the time. This seams a little more involved. Nonetheless, I will do it after Ive read how 100 times to be sure not to mess up.

I'm sure this is a dumb question. I've installed USB drivers. My xp machine recognizes the phone when I plug it in. Drive not mounted, debugging turned on. When I enter adb devices, it just says list of devices attached and nothing more. The device is not recognized by adb. I assume this is a driver problem? If there's something else I'm not doing right, I don't know what it could be. I'd really appreciate help, though. Thanks

EDIT: re-downloaded the drivers and re-installed. I'm also getting message that says 'adb server is out of date. killing' then 'daemon started successfully' and the blank list of devices. A couple of times in my trying around with this, I've gotten it to recognize the device, but it says it's offline. I've installed the galaxy drivers and also the generic USB drivers from the sdk. I've tried restarting both computer and phone with no luck.

One Click Root......Possibly......

EDIT: Reported that this will not work.....

I noticed a couple of requests for a one click Verizon fascinate root program. I think I found one below

I found this under the Samsung Fascinate rooted day one blog post on here....

There is this link in the comments to this page below How to root (unroot) Samsung Vibrant

Which takes you to a video tutorial and has a link to this one click root program that supposedly works for all samsung galaxy S phones.

Here is the One click root program d/l link
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

NOTE -
I have not tried this YET.....but plan too I am awaiting my phone in the mail, which should be here Wed.

I thought one of the Users who knew what they were doing with relation to rooting could give it a try and if it works it's a One click root for everyone to use and could be added to the first post in the forum.

Let me know if this doesn't work as I will edit and delete the links/post if it doesn't work......no need to confuse anyone.....

Hopefully this will work,
Drootz

Sorry to hear you are having problems. I just finished rooting my phone. At first I had the same problem as you (highlighted portion above). I powered the phone off completely, then turned back on, plugged it back into the computer and everything work afterwards. Hope this helps.

This doesn't work on this phone. I have made a new version of mine that is much easier but have not had the chance to test it yet. I don't have to work tomorrow so I will test it before class and hopefully have it up here. It will not be 1 click because this exploit is different on everyone phone. But it will be only 3 easy steps.
