How to Root

Hi everyone, I'm new to rooting and changing anything on my Fascinate, but I'm tired of the lag and I just want stock android with no vzw stuff or bing.

So a few questions (not sure where else to post this) but what is the difference between rooting (what does that actually do?), flashing a rom, and a kernel? Theres a lot of information to absorb here...

basically i'm trying to experience the stock android love. does rooting wipe away all my user data? what about flashing rom or kernel?

Thanks guys for any replies.

Rooting, means that you gain super user permission on your phone, it allows you to change files that were not meant to be touched by the end user. this is done by moving files around.

A ROM=Read Only Memory, is basically your Operating system equivalent to saying windows XP,,,

Kernel i think the equivalent would be drivers ist what connects the hardware to the software i believe.

As far as getting an actual pure google experience on your phone , thats not availble but they can strip down the stock Roms that come with the phone and customize them. and there are some really great ones out there.

Rooting will not wipe any of that because basically all your doing is moving files around to gain superuser access.
putting a new rom on will but you can use tools like titanium back up to save you with that

i hope that helped a little

When you extract the FascinateRoot_v2.zip files, do they need to be extracting into the C:/ drive, or can they be extracted and run from anywhere on your computer?

anywhere as long as you make sure to have that reflect when you enter the commands so if you put it in downloads folder it needs to change from

C:\FascinateRoot_v2

to

C:\downloads\FascinateRoot_v2

thats if you are doing the manual commands

if you are just doing one click method it can go anywhere, and you just hit start root

Thank you! I was going to try the one click method - I just got the new file that was edited for the DL09 update. Wish me luck!

I tried the one click method and when the device boots back up it says error device not found or device error.... any Ideas? I think due to a media sync feature that keeps autoloading when device reboots.....

Now.....
I am currently trying the manual method however after running ./rage.bin it's been sitting for 21 minutes now....Any ideas?

Keep waiting or battery pull amd try again some people said it took them about half hour

I'll keep waiting it out and see what happens.

I was browsing and saw something that said try 1 click and pulls usb plug from phone after phone reboots (before media sync starts) so in another 10-15 min of waiting I am gonna try that....

fingers crossed I can just wait this out and it will work.

EDIT: 27 minutes later it kicked back the command prompt and I continued with the manual commands everything went fine till I got to the last command which was
adb install Superuser.apk
and it said failure install failed already exists which I'm taking as it worked since I never lost the icon on the phone itself....time to reset the phone and try titanium..... and....ROOT is BACK!

Excellent brother, told you ,,,patience is a virtue and all that jazz.
the adb method of rooting is pretty robust, so its a good catch all when all else fails

Glad it worked out enjoy!

Once the phone is rooted how do you set the new root acct password?

Good morning and welcome to Android Central Geosnipe, can you please explain what you mean by this question as i dont know what password you are reffering to. What device do you have?

hello all.....well after moving all my apps from the card back to phone i finally got the new update.....my question now is as i was reading above is when i try to do the one touch root it comes back as device not found. IF i do unplug my usb after the reboot of the phone when do i plug it back in or do i cancel the sync and then plug back in.

also my phone was rooted before

EDIT* unplugged the usb and canceled the sync and plugged back in and BAM everything is rooted again!!!

hi i need some help with rooting my fascinate after it starts to push the files to my phone and it turns off but it tells me "device not found" please help me !!

You know whats strange, everyone keeps talking about this sync thing, i have never seen it

It worked

New rooter here. And a very cautious one. I stared with a stock phone updated to DL09 via OTA

I probably did about 4 hours of reading before starting this. I know a ROM from a Kernel but wanted to get the bigger picture about Rom Managers, ClockworkMod, ODIN, Recovery, Download mode, etc.

I'm new to phones but I use 3rd party firmware in my wireless router (WRT) 3rd party firmware in my MP3 Player Rockbox) and run Linux on my home PC, but I booted XP for this.

I followed method 3 (to a 'T' of course) and it worked exactly the way it said it would. I used method 3 for the educational benefit.

Now that I'm all done, my only question is: What exactly is the last step: Reset your phone?

A few notes from my 'rooting' experiences

If you updated your 'software' after being prompted, after the DL09 OTA update, you do not need to install the 'samsung drivers' that is the first step in most guides to rooting.

For those that need the drivers; I saw 32bit drivers listed as x86 vs 64bit.

To help others to feel confident before starting something like this, these are some of the ways you can backup your device before starting.

OntheFlyBackup - from the market
App List Backup - from the market
Sync apps with web based Appbrain
Sync Google apps (via settings in stock calendar apps)
VZW Backup Assistant (to backup contacts)
Copy whole SD card to local PC
Backup with Astro File Manager

You might also want to consider a SMS/Call log backup if that matters to you. I have no idea if messages are backed up in any of the above methods.

I installed Odin and verified that it could see my phone even though I didn't need it for this method of rooting.

I did not know where to put my phone in 'debug mode' so here are the instructions I found:

1. From the Home screen, press Menu.
2. Choose Settings.
3. Tap Applications.
4. Tap Development.
5. Check USB Debugging to enable it. Uncheck it to disable it.

This is also where you enable 'Stay Awake Mode'

I had to wait about 10 minutes to be kicked back out to the c:/FascinateRoot_v02 prompt after running rage.bin

It's hard to be patient but it worked out for me.

Also this command: mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system

that's the number '1' in stl9

Thanks to DroidXcon and to Adrynalyne for making this feel very doable. There is a lot of 'stuff' being said, some of it rather negative, but these two are all over the net giving good, simple to understand advice.

Thanks for the earlier response - I actually went ahead and got a version of windows xp and opened it up using parallels, it seems like there's more help for windows, and that wasn't hard.

So if I get the same result you [INSTALL_FAILED_ALREADY_EXISTS] - that means my phone is already rooted, and I can go ahead and learn how to flash it?

Thanks for the step-by-step! Huge help!
