yes i did pull the battery and as always, left it out for at least 10 seconds. (old electronics rule of thumb).
Sogone, I had to try the process 5 times before it worked. After each try I restarted my computer, powered off the phone, removed the battery and tried again. Not sure why I had to do this but my phone is now free.
Did you pull the phone battery between attempts?

looks like you're rooted.... # line command is a superuser (or rooted) command line - i sees it.
rm failed for /data/local/temp, No such file or directory .......I'm assuming this means the directory doesn't exist I looked through my phone using manager and didn't see it, do I need to create the directory? This is my first time using adb someone please help?
I've read, re-read, and read the instructions again (and a few dozen other posts on the topic)... I think I'm ready to root!
(The first time is always scary, no?)
My one newb question before pulling the plug on Sprint ID forever (thank you, lord) --
Do I need to backup anything before rooting? I see that Titanium Backup is recommended, but works only for non-carbon backups after rooting (and is not a replacement for nandroid). I'm also aware of the sticky post on reverting to stock and other posts for reviving a bricked device. And I don't really care about any of my current applications, saving SMS records, etc.
Hypothetically speaking, if the root fails for whatever reason (let's just say I didn't chmod correctly) what happens if I just decide to forget it? Will my phone work? Will I need to "undo" some part of the process? Am I screwed big time bad?
Many thanks to the OP, DroidXcon, and everyone else for the helpful posts. Hopefully many more thank-yous forthcoming when the root is complete.![]()
