HOW TO: Stay stock and get rid of the bloat

This seemed to work

From a tip from another forum, I did a hard reset and then installed Z4root. It worked and I was able to use all root applications. I used My Backup to backup my data and applications to the SD card. I reinstalled My Backup and restored my apps.

Kind of the hard way to do it, but my phone seems to be running a little smoother now, so maybe the hard reset was a good thing.

This fixed it.

I downloaded the apk file for the z4root onto my Evo and did as it said, but I only did the temp root as I wanted to test the waters a bit before i dove head first into the unknown. What happened was a mystery. It said I had successfully become rooted and I then proceeded to download Wifi Tether from the Market and it informed me that I needed to be rooted to be able to use this, I assumed it was a generic message and proceeded. It failed to work. Then i went to Super User (I forgot if that is the official name) and it said I could check for an update, it then downloaded one onto my phone and told me to load the zip in recovery mode. Well, I am a total n00b and have no idea how to do that and really feel a bit lost, so after much debate, you get a long winded post up here. BTW, this worked perfect for my Future Brother in-laws Droid X 2 days ago.

Thank you for your time,
Carl

Not sure if its just from doing a hard reset, but has anyone noticed an improvement in battery life after removing some of the software bloat?

I removed all the amazon stuff (Kindle, MP3), Quik, Quickoffice (I bought the full version), Nova and Nascar

So two simple questions before I do this temp root:

1.) Freezing an app means what exactly?
2.) After freezing or deleting these apps, will I have any problems doing the OTA updates when they are released?

1.You don't delete the app but you disable it from running and showing up on the phone.

2. Just defrost the app and you should have no problem.

The just released Bloat Freezer allows you to freeze in one click if you are rooted for less than a quarter of the price of Titanium Backup Premium and will freeze ALL system apps, TB has problems with some and cannot freeze them like Amazon MP3.

And as I am sure has already been mentioned in this topic but I will say it again if you are just deleting/uninstalling these apps you will NOT be able to get ANY OTA updates unless you load them back on your phone and set the UNIX permissions correctly

I learned this the hard way which is why I spent so much time writing Bloat Freezer for people that dont want to pay $6 for Titanium Backup Premium and that arent comfortable doing all the work in manually in adb and risking ruining their file system.

Here is the thread for it

Ummm...ok so I got a little too excited and deleted some of the apps with this process before reading about the freezing part. Deleted Nova, Amazon, Blockbuster. Based on the statement above, would it be easier now(assuming I want to download the next OTA) to just permanently root the EVO and put a new rom on or try to load the apps back on.

Followed: Bloat Freezer - Freeze your Preinstalled System Apps link and found the thread with instructions to reinstall the system apps, but its for the Droid X. Is there somewhere I can find the apps for the EVO/Sprint? Nova, Nascar....?

Restoring them is easy if you can find the APKs, the latest RUU will have them in the /system/app folder, which is where they should also be put on your EVO, I or anyone else with an EVO could also copy them off our own phones for you if you had a list of exactly what you deleted.

Pretty sure I found them all, but don't know how to add them back to the system folder. Is there a thread that explains how? I tried copying them from the laptop to the SD card then tried to move them from there to the system folder and it's a no go. I did the Z4 temp root and tried it too, but still didn't work.

Would a factory reset reinstall the factory applications or is it permanently removed?

Depends on the phone and what was removed. Some phones will restore them with a factory reset, others you will need to reflash the stock rom.

I tried z4root on my wifes evo but it didn't work.

Titanium backup didn't recognize the root

Phone: Evo 4g Application Removed: Amazon MP3

Send me an email at BloatFreezer@gmail.com and I will send you the Apk, you will not be able to install it normally however, are you familiar with using the terminal on your phone?

Z4 does not give you full root on the EVO (But does on other phones) as the NAND is still locked. You would need to root with something like Unrevoked to get full root.

If z4 isn't working for temp root, do a factory reset and then try. That's worked for a lot of people.

I just want to remove Sprint Voicemail, FriendStream (although I heard this one's forbidden to remove), FootPrints, Setup, HTC Mobile Guide, and Stocks (another forbidden removal). Is there a safe way to remove any of this??

Does anyone know?

The only way to do it easily and still have the option of getting OTA updates in the future is to freeze them with Bloat Freezer or Titanium Backup Premium
