HOW TO: Stay stock and get rid of the bloat

I just want to remove Sprint Voicemail, FriendStream (although I heard this one's forbidden to remove), FootPrints, Setup, HTC Mobile Guide, and Stocks (another forbidden removal). Is there a safe way to remove any of this??

Does anyone know?

Remove all of those, except for voicemail. You cant mess yourself up too bad removing bloat anyways, make sure you delete the corresponding widgets to the apps you deleted.

Or give bloat freezer a try :p

all I'm looking to do is do a temp root on the EVO and have access to the wireless tether abilities. I'm going to be traveling in the next few weeks and there are no hotspots.

Is this possible with any app (z4Root or anything else).

Its hard for me to test exactly what temp root is capable of, because me and most others are perm rooted.

Try getting temp root with Z4, then download wireless tether and barnacle tether from the market. Hopefully one will work.

I have the sync icom going constantly on my evo. All its doing is killing my phone. Anyone else have this issue or know whats causing it. I deleted Nova, blockbuster, friend stream, peep, and footprints.

I destroyed a previous EVO....got a new one for free (lucky me lol) and haven't plunged back into rooting/flashing. I am taking it slowly and did the z4 temp root for my root accessing needs. I can verify that z4 root will allow bloatware to be removed and wifi/usb tether as well. Maybe I got lucky, but I have a 003 hardware model, hboot 2.10 (the most pain in the ass version i guess?), and I haven't had to do any hard resets...everything has worked first try. I don't reboot, or run out of battery often, so I leave z4 temp root on all the time. I will plunge back into rooting/flashing when CM7 stable with 4g comes out. COME ON CM!!

Just to reaffirm, I have z4, Root Explorer, Wifi Tether, USB Tether, Widget Locker, and Launcher Pro Plus. z4 allows me to use all those root apps to the fullest.

i wish i could get this to work.... z4 tells me its complete and have root but I dont (tried about a dozen times)

Give unrevoked a shot, it is almost as easy, you just click the button on your computer instead of your phone to root. It also gives you FULL root, unlike Z4.

Used unrevoked last Saturday, worked great. Watched a couple you tube videos and read a little. Almost self installed. Love the new apps I can use. First phone root.

Is it better to freeze them? I would rather not delete them, just in case of an update, but I'm sick of them fusing so many resources all the time.

Also, will a factory reset restore them if I deleted them? I assume a Nandroid restore would work as well.

Freezing will allow you to still get OTA updates if you have a stock ROM or defrost them at any time, deleting will not unless you put them back and then reset the UNIX permissions correctly.

A factory reset will NOT normally restore them, a nandroid restore will.

Ok. I just rooted, and I'll probably stick with a stock ROM (for now). I downloaded TB, but I understand you need Z4root to properly freeze apps. Does TB not offer that option?

EDIT: Scratch that. Just found the Freeze option, but I have to donate. Just answered my own dumb question.

I'll probably just delete and do a Nandroid restore (if) I get an update.

Now, if I backup everything using TB, and delete what I don't want right after, will it bring it back if I do a restore?

My own app freezes apps, Bloat Freezer, made specifically for that purpose. It is not free, but it is only a quarter of the price of TB Premium. As far as doing a Nandoid goes, you realize you will lose all the data and settings on your phone when you restore, since the day that you created the backup right?

And No, TB will not backup system apps, only the data for them (if I remember correctly)

I kind of figured as much. My thing was getting back the system apps, blockbuster sprint garbage, IF, big "if", an update should occur. If I do a Nandroid restore, than that's fine. But if a factory reset will get me back to stock for the update, that's cool to.

Just trying to keep my bases covered.

Not with a factory reset... you will need to launch Titanium after the factory reset... stored on the SD card and restore Missing Apps with Data or Restore All Apps + System Data.... everything is saved to the SD Card in the Titanium Backup folder. System Apps/Data and Downloaded Apps/Data.

But TB will not back up the actual Apks in the /system/app folder which is the whole point. A common misconception, if you backup the system apps with TB and then delete them, they are not actually backed up.

Freezing is really the only way if you do not want to lose ANYTHING and just apply the OTA like normal if one comes out (Gingerbread is definitely coming for the EVO at some point). If you are not worried about reverting to an old backup and losing data or whatever, the delete away.

Ok. If I could, I'd look into your app. Looks pretty sick.

As for reverting to an old backup, I'm not really worried about it. I had to replace my previous device, Incredible, 2 times, and each time I just used AppBrain to get back what I needed.

Also, last week I found on Astro File Manager a way to backup my downloaded apps, so now I have the apks for everything.

Sorry for bugging you guys, but thank for the clarification :p

Is there any way of backing up system apps so that they can then be deleted and restored later on? Ex: if I want to delete system apps but be able to return my phone back to factory condition.
Or can they only be frozen?

They can be frozen, or they could be copied manually onto your SD card or even your computer. The only issue with copying is that when you copy them back to restore them, the unix permissions on each APK need to be restored correctly.

Freezing is by far the easiest way, since it is basically one click, but copying manually is definitely doable it just takes a lot more work, because in order to restore them you have to know how to do it and do it the right way, or it will be pointless. I am surprised that Titanium Backup does not do this, as it would be extremely easy to code into the program, maybe I will include this feature in future versions of Bloat Freezer.
