How to stop/remove back up assistant?

I heard somewhere that backup assistant from VZW (the one on the sync menu with the two red arrows) was a battery drain.

How can I remove it? Stop it if I could?

Is there anything bad to it? What does it do? Can google back up for you?

Factory restore is the only way to unsync it, the app will still be there but won't be working. You're contacts are automatically backed up to Google, at this point the app is useless because even if you went to another phone (BB or iPhone) you can sync your Google contacts to it. Just do a factory restore and skip the backup assistance part.

Or there's a trade off. Go to your home screen and tap MENU>SETTINGS>ACCOUNTS&SYNC and then uncheck Auto-sync. Again the trade off is you won't get any automatic syncing of mail, news, stocks or weather. Then again all I do is click my weather widget and it updates when I want it to.

You should be able to go to menu -> settings -> accounts & sync and turn off only the syncing for the Backup Assistant.

There is no choice to turn off sync, just when it will happen.
