how to transfer files from galaxy s3 with broken screen.

I know this is an old thread, but I am currently trying to download info from one phone to another (broken screen). My question is, do I need a battery in both phones? Do both need to be on? I tried to do this with only the new phone on, and no battery in the old phone, and nothing showed up on the screen. I tried Youtubing, but I only found how to switch boards, not how to transfer data. Thanks.

You should connect the phone that has your data to a PC and use the Kies software to backup the data.
Then connect the new phone and restore the data to it.

Hi,

Kies will not let you access your phone unless you unlock the screen on the device, this can be done relatively easily!

Go onto the Samsung website and click the 'find my phone' button (or simply google this).

Log in and there will be an option on the left hand side of the screen to unlock your screen remotely, click this and when the progress bar filled it will say 'your phone is now unlocked'.

Connect with your USB Cable and Kies will allow you access to your files.

I hope this helps, if not let me know and I will try to explain further.

Hi, I tried and succesfully remotely unlocked screenvia find my samsung.... unfortunatley the Kies still sees the screen/device as locked.

Daf. :(

OMG mbell1988 I cannot thank you enough!! My screen is totally black even though menu buttons are lighting up & my comp would not recognise any pics or data on my galaxy. I have been a crying mess for the last hour thinking all the photos of my daughter were gone forever. Thanks to you I set up Kies & went on the samsung site, unlocked my screen remotely & now have all the pics recovered & saved!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! x lifesaver

kathleenhall87,
Once you solve the black screen issue (or get a replacement phone) you may want to consider saving your pictures/videos to an SDCard - that way, even if you can't access the phone, you can pull the SDCard out and still have all of your important content saved.

In addition you should look at using something like Cloud Drive: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.amazon.clouddrive.photos to automatically backup your pictures/videos to the cloud (5GB free). It never hurts to have more than failsafe in place.

This just happened to me! Phone works but screen and LCD broken and unresponsive. I had a screen lock too so what I did was I took off the back plate, removed the battery, and unscrewed the six screws to uncover the PCB board under the back housing. Then I carefully disconnected all the tiny ribbon connectors. I waited a minute just to be superstitious and then reconnected all the ribbon connectors and put everything back to how it was. Then I downloaded Kies from the Samsung website, pluged my phone into a computer via USB and was able to view all my files! Something about disconnecting the PCB board resets the default settings to factory state but doesn't delete any data at all. Good luck and I hope this helps someone out there :)

Thank you so much mctoom,

Dont know why i never thought of that earlier... i tried to download note 2 remote access with no luck and thought all my photos where gone,

I was successfully able to unlock my phone via find my samsung which one took 1 minute, thanks alot once again.

thank you so much, i have tried everything else possible and this is the only thing that worked. My screen was smashed and i could not get any of my photos or music off of it, i tried kies and it said that it was locked, well obviously i couldn't unlock it if the screen was not working but anyways thank u again, u are a life saver :):):)

You?re a genius!!! It worked out!!! I got my screen broken today, tomorrow i'll take it to the technical assistance.. but.. like everyone's phone.. it contains, lots of things we don't want anyone (technic) peering into them, right?!

So I followed your steps, accessed the samsung website, then, unlock my screen, and suddenly, my pc could access my phone via usb cable!!! Awesome!!! :)

Bingo!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the others!

Best regards!

do batteries need to be in both phones?do i boot both phones or just the cracked screen? if i need to boot both which one do i boot first? its not showing up on my new phone at all i can HEAR that its turned on though. please helpppp

Samsung Link works for me, saved all files, music, pictures, and videos from my cracked phone while connected to wifi and USB connected to computer (not sure which is needed). link.samsung.com

Don't you need to have the phone linked to the samsung site first?

I get there to select my phone and step one is me doing things on the phone.

do you think this will work with the galaxy note 2 a well? if not, do you have any suggestions as I am in EXACTLY the same predicament.

how would you apply this method to a galaxy note 2 as I am in the same predicament..

please help me I am desperate.

marab123,
The most reliable method is to replace the screen assembly (ex. http://m.repairsuniverse.com/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-lcd-touch-screen-replacement-white.html - be sure you search for your color bezel, etc) but you can use Kies to make a backup if the device is booting normally and the screen isn't locked. If the screen is locked - well, that's what security is all about: preventing unauthorized access to the device, even with debugging tools.

I briefly looked for the Samsung 'find my phone' link but it appeared to me that you had to already have a Samsung account enabled on your phone. YMMV.

I have already purchased a new s3, thought I had a backup...my bad, lesson for me. My old phone is no longer "activated"; but, it does still work other than the digitizer. What would you suggest as the next move to get my data from the broken digitizer to the new exact same s3 model? Phone number has already been ported. Thank you in advance for your support.
