[How To] Unroot and return to stock [RUU Method]

For some reason my computer won't download any of the RUU's except 3.26.651.6. I tried running the RUU with that one and all it does is give me the USB error over and over.:(....It's feeling pretty hopeless at this point.

Ok, I'm getting a little frustrated. Here's what I've done so far (using LJ's instructions and OE1's tips):

-Downloaded HTC Sync, did not open/run, and latest RUU (Sept 20 2010 for radio 2.15.00.07.28)
-Ran the s-on tool from unrevoked (I used unrevoked3, not forever, but I was trying everything)
-Power off > bootloader > hboot > run RUU (I've tried both hboot and fastboot)

I've done this literally 25 times. I've tried a few different USB ports in the machine. I can't get past the 170 USB error. Can anyone tell me if I'm doing something wrong or missing a step? I can't figure it out!!

Im no expert at all.. but do you have HBoot driver installed on your computer? get them from this link
Unrevoked: Root HTC Android EVO 4G/Desire/Droid Incredible [How To]

if not.. some people in other places talked of downloading the PC36IMG file onto your phone from the RUU and installing that in HBoot. not sure if that would work

I do have the hboot driver installed. I did that before I used the unrevoked3 tool, so I'm pretty sure its still in place. I also tried flashing a PC36IMG I found on XDA that was supposedly already rooted but that didn't work. When I got tot the bootloader and selected the zip to upload it failed. I'm going to try two things this afternoon: load a stock PC36IMG, then try the RUU again. I was trying to use the newest RUU from your previous post, then saw my radio number in the bootloader was different and tried using the one that matched, but had no more success.

If my battery life on cyanogenmod wasn't so terrible I probably wouldn't be doing any of this. CM7 is really bad for me, so I'm on 6 today. We'll see how that works out. Thanks for your help.

Sorry, but I'm really not very good at this, so I have a few questions:

How do you know which of the ~10 RUUs to choose?

Why do most of them simply crash when I run them?

Are there any alternate download places? Most take several months (literally) to download.

Does this work with a phone that gets hung up on th "HTC EVO 4g" screen at startup?

Try not to answer these with abbreviations if possible.

Thanks in advance!

need asap

I recently root my phone but the market hasn't work and now my camera lens broke also and i want to get a new phone but i cant unroot what my friend done i have cyanogen mod 7 . ive try to upload and zip all the files that was told to me but no changes please help me

I just found a post that saved my sanity. Here are the instructions:

1) Download the s-on tool (.zip file) from the Unrevoked site, move it to the root of the SD card, boot into recovery, select it and install it.
2) Download the RUU zip file, not the .exe (best spot I found was the link from orangeeater1's post on page 32 of this discussion). I used the signed .zip for radio 2.15.00.11.19.
3) Move that .zip to the root of the SD.
4) Open Astro (or whatever file manager you use), find the .zip and rename it "PC36IMG", and do not make the .zip.zip mistake.
5) Reboot into the bootloader and let the phone do it's magic. It should find your file, run it and ask if you want to apply the update. You do.

Mine ran, rebooted, ran some more and then asked me to reboot. When I did, voila!! There is the Evo I remembered, in all of it's stock glory, updated to 2.2.

I'm considering trying to re-root the phone to get my free wifi hotspot back, but my experience with ROMs was mixed. I found that my battery life was terrible with Cyanogenmod 7 RC2 and only decent with RC1. RC2 also told me my SD card was broken, and I reformatted it like an idiot, loosing my sock recovery which got me into this mess in the forst place. I went back to CM6, but it was just like you would expect a downgrade to be: not really as cool.

Next I went to Warm TwoPointTwo. It was cool and closer to my OG Evo, but battery life was still terrible.

This was a real education and I don't feel nearly as noob-ish as I used to, but I'm glad to be home again. I love Android!!

HELP!!!

I need to unroot... just rooted yesterday. I am having camera problems and it seems that it is a hardware issue, so I will have Best Buy give me another one. I tried to download the RUU by clicking on the link at the begining, but it shows the website as being up for sale... how do I get the Right RUU... I have had my phone for about 3 weeks so it was brand new. any help on getting back to stock would be great

can any moderator verify if this is a safe and good way to unroot... I keep getting the USB error

figured it out

for any other newbs having trouble, when you get to the screen on your phone with the skatingboarding androids... you have to push volume down to select not to update, then you have tell it not to reboot, then select fastboot so you can enable a connetion with the computer. Maybe someone can update the original post to reflect this

Thanks a lot!

Had just bought a phone and wanted to get back to stock... first time ever dealing with android (iphone guy) and was able to do this thanks to your guide!

at 75% i get the error 110 unable to open file "file open error"

Can somebody help?

You have to make sure that the RUU is compatible with the hboot driver (this is the driver that you downloaded and installed from unrevoked.com prior to rooting your phone with unrevoked 3 or forever). I had the same issue when using a much earlier RUU (stock rom). Download latest stock rom from the RUU link (found in the first page of this thread) and then the latest hboot driver from unrevoked.com. That should remedy the issue. Dont panic!
