How to use HiFi Plus module with computer?

I have a spare HiFi Plus module which I'd like to use as an external DAC for my laptop. I just cannot get it to be recognised, though, except once or twice when I've seen it come up as a sound device but with unusably low output. Is there anyone who has got this working who can give me step by step instructions how to do this? Thanks.
