hahaha....thank you so much for your patience and vivid examples. guess I have some idea for nand. that is pretty much like software ghost doing for pc os, making an image of one partition or the whole disk, just in case we need to back to the second when we created the image, right?

As to root or not root, i see your saying. May I say that unroot is not officially turn back your phone to "unrooted", just restore os to the stock, and sprint cannot tell if you rooted or not, correct?

So if I wont bring phone back to Sprint, so they cannot tell if the phone is root or not. does that mean that they cannot detect your phone root status on the air, furthermore, they cannot ban your phone since they dont know if you root you phone or not?

anyone mind to see if my understanding is correct? thank you

OK, next issue.

When a run adb shell
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image

I get an error saying /sdcard/flash_image: No such file or directory

The file is on my SD Card, which is attached to my PC. I reinstalled Java JRE, but still getting the error.

I am SOOOOOO close.

Make sure the flash_image on sdcard didn't get renamed. Also make sure its on the root of sdcard not in any file.

Verified, flash_image

It is on the root of my SD card, not in any file or folder.

Could me running Windows 7 Pro be causing me an issue?

What do you get back when you enter adb shell at the prompt?

I get a number sign (#).

Here is a cut and paste from the command prompt:

D:\Program Files (x86)\Android SDK\tools>adb shell
# cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
/sdcard/flash_image: No such file or directory

Ok. Try this while still inside the shall and at the # prompt:
Code:
cd /sdcard
ls

is flash_image listed?

Is your SD card still mounted to the computer from copying everything over?

Did you unmount correctly?

My SD card is in my phone, which is attached to my pc via the USB cable. I haven't unmounted the card.

I can browse the card via windows (although it does ask to scan it, but I don't let it).

If you can browse the card in windows, its still mounted to the computer. Unmount it from the windows system tray, then slide your notification shade down on the phone and change it from Disk drive to Charge only. Then try again.

Hold on, figured it out.

I had my phone plugged into a USB Switch. I guess it was ok for charging and SD Card access, but NOT for using the ADB Tool.

Proceeding........ at least for the moment.

Thanks gbhil for your assistance!!!!!

OK, I should be fully rooted at this point. Is there any easy way to validate I have root access?

I also installed Titanium Backup and it says Root Access => Failed

This has me concerned, although it does mention I need BusyBox installed. Does the 1.3.2 Custom ROM include BusyBox?

1.3.2 includes titanium? Wasn't listed as installed. I had to manually install it. How do I verify that I infact have 1.3.2 installed?

I'm new here - bit of a noob question - But if i accidentally skipped the step of installed clockwork recovery in part 3 and making a backup - but everything else seems fine is this bad? It said make a backup, this is like gold...lol. Was this a crucial step?

I think that back up was just incase things went horribly wrong, or to give you a stock UI. If you have full root and everything is ok, i would just make a back up now =)

Alright folks.. I'm digging into the required reading and all and I'm going to take a crack at this tonight. I'm technically proficient, but this is my first Android device so "fear of the unknown" is kicking in.

Thanks for the guide and all the materials. It's made easy to ingest so far.
