[How To] Wireless Tethering for Root Users

Cool. Thanks for the quick response. So I won't click on the hotspot icon in the notification while tethering. Hopefully that won't lead to the Sprint hotspot charges.
Just leave it alone as they said and all should be okay.

wireless tether Epic

I am running Midnight 5.2 on EC05 I got WT 2.0.7 to run without rebooting my phone however the display goes from green when its not running to grey when i enable it. Almost seems to work in reverse. I can see it on my laptop but windows wont connect. Anyone have any advice? Thanks

You know what's weird? The wifi tether app that came with SRF doesn't work but the wifi tether app from the market does.

I am getting force stops and system resets with WiFi Tether v3.0 pre12, I am using a stock but rooted device.

I have found that turning off the radios when activating the tether stops this, data transfers fine once signal is restored.

I will install the latest version 3.0pre14 and see if it works better.

Also the difference between wireless tether and WiFi tether is:

- Wireless Tether creates an adhoc network connection, that your PC can use to connect to but most devices like other PDAs, iPods, etc won't recognize.

-WiFi Tether creates a infrastructure network capable of WPA security that can be used by all devices.

Wifi Tether Stopped by Sprint on Epic 4g

It looks like today out of nowhere I cannot run wireless tether anymore. There is a perm message stating that it is blocked by security policy now. I do not have my phone connected to anything other than Gmail (no exchange/activesync etc).

Wireless Tethering is working fine for me. I'm actually connected right now via Wireless Tethering to my desktop to post this message.

Any help with getting wifi or wireless tether working would be greatly appreciated. I'm using ACS, 1.1.0, Twilight Zone. I've tried ALL the versions in the beginning of this post and nothing working. Getting either freezes in wifi or reboots (with 4G off). Uninstalled after reading hundreds of posts here and in XDA and tried to install only "wireless tether" but now my phone won't let me as stating I have no memory (but I have plenty). Prior to uninstalling wireless tether, it was asking me if I really have root access (but I believe I still do unless I lost it after updating to ECO5 but still able to use other programs such as screen shot or mybackup root, that require root access) Sorry for long post but wondering if trying new kernal might help? I've seen one post say this helps with making the wired tether work but not sure of wireless. Thanks!

I have no problem using the newest Wireless Tethering on a few of my devices and then a couple others I had to jump back to build 2.0.7 and use that because of an older Wireless Card on one of my desktops that just doesn't like the newer Wireless Tethering builds.

Otherwise I haven't had any lockups and such. As far as it asking about root access that is normal for the first time you "start" and "stop" tethering you will be prompted first time for each.

As far as wired tethering goes, k0nane of Syndicate stated that EC05 or better yet Sammy "broke" the use of wired tethering again but I think he mentioned that being fixed if he puts out another update to Syndicate.

Thanks for reply Paul. I actually got wireless tether working but can get it to connect to my tablet. I guess the ad hoc networking you get in wifi tether is needed to connect to that. Quick question, tried to install genocide kernal by flashing in CWM but after two tries, still showing Twilight Zone 1.1.0. Do I need to clear something first?

Not sure on that concerning the Genocide kernel... Another way you can check to see if it flashed is look in SetCPU under info... Look to see in the second line it will says

Linux version blah blah... then it has an email address..

If it says something to the extent of "tanimn" then that is Twilight Zone's kernel done by tanimn

If it says something like... "rodderik" then that is Genocide.

Could be in the Genocide kernel they didn't update the build prop so its not showing in the About Phone. Otherwise the kernel should flash with no wipe.

So it actually says teamviper@teamviper-Virtual box which I think refers to Genocide???

Yep sounds good to me. Team Viper/Rodderik/Genocide all the same mix.

Thanks Paul, this explains why the wireless tether now works. Unfortunately wifi tether is what i need to connect to my tablet but still not working. It connects but no data sent. I'm going to play around more with it maybe can get it to work.

Wifi Tether Questions

Hi guys,

I'm sorry if this sounds like a n00b question, but I've spent several hours over the last couple days researching, reading and following directions to what I believe to be to the T. I used the one.click.root.exploitv2.5.5.zip to root my phone. I then tried to install several versions of the wifi tether application to use my epic for a hotspot for my my laptop, xoom and g/f's iPad2. Ultimately, the only one I could remotely get to work was the 3.0-pre12 version. That's all well and good, except I can't get it to work as a hotspot for any device unless I disable "Enable WIFI-Encryption" (which strangely there are two of listed in the settings menu).

When I enable security I either get a perpetual connect dialog (laptop - WinXp), an out of range message (Xoom) or a maddening...well, nothing relating to the hotspot SSID (iPad2). At this point I'm almost ready to settle for that rather than pay the money to a certain carrier every month but it seems less than ideal.

Preferably I'd rather not have to sacrifice the functionality of being able to use my epic as it's surely capable of vs having to worry about someone grabbing sensitive information as we're doing...whatever.

I suppose this is all a long winded way of saying...help or advice please.

TIA

I used pre 11 and/or 15 and had excellent results. Don't have the links, changed phones, but search
where you found 12 and these should be listed.

I've been using 2.0.7 and it works perfectly. I could not get 3.0 to work at all. Are you trying to use 3.0 because you need infrastructure tethering?

Also on my xoom I used the wpa supplicant adhoc mod from xda.

The link to the master download list for Wireless Tethering is in the OP.
