How was your first time with Google Wallet?

Assuming Google Wallet is active and a prepaid balance (thanks Google) is in place....does the phone need to have CONNECTIVITY to work for payment?

I move my Sprint service between my rooted HTC EVO (for Infrastructure Wifi tethering) and my new Nexus S. If my NS4G is deactivated in Sprint's world....will the transaction go through? My presumption is "most likely" given the balance detail, security and NFC functions being phone-based....but not sure.

Anybody complete a Google Wallet transaction without active Sprint connection?

If it needs it I'll switch back from the EVO to try it out...just thought I would ask first......

I have used mine successfully without any data connection.

My GW usage experience this evening seems similar to others posted here....

1st stop - Jack in the Box (South San Francisco). Clueless cashier, tried to grab my phone but retreated to set up a credit transaction at my request....NFC reader lit up, but no success - none. Didn't want to try again since I wasn't sure how prepaid card deductions worked...so paid cash.

2nd stop - CVS Pharmacy (5 mins away). Like others....flawless transaction. Cashier duly impressed ("is that Bluetooth?") and while payment made with prepaid card, receipt shows "MasterCard", masked number and "RF" in the subtotal line - which I presume is the NFC equivalent of "Swiped".

Three observations following this 1-for-2 transaction test for GW:

--GW doesn't have to be running for transaction to take but PIN timeout does work.....choices from 1 min to 30 mins and will have to enter PIN at transaction time if not recently entered.

--GW shows both the failed transaction and the successful transaction in "Tap events" EXACTLY THE SAME WAY. No amounts or receipt-level detail. A major weakness.

--It took between 2 and 2 1/2 hours for the prepaid card balance to reflect the deduction from my transaction at CVS. Not a connectivity issue - had 4G running while out and wifi at home 10 mins after transaction - so perhaps a server delay. A bit bothersome if you are moving from GW merchant to GW merchant (VISA would consider this a network failure). I assume it was either conditional to my phone/GW or an early pilot glitch that will be VISA-level realtime by launch.

Technically, GW has promise. Socialogically....going to be very slow uptake until we see the embedded NFC support on phones reach warp speed in North America.

I would definitely use again but would not seek out GW merchants just to use it.

Just tried using Oxygen 2.3, latest radio and .5 release of Google Wallet floating around. Got my $10 from Google and used it to buy lunch at McDonalds. Terminal wouldn't recognize anything until I started Google Wallet and put in my PIN. Then, it went right through.

Worked like a charm today for lunch at McDonald's. I was so pumped to use it haha. Went in, ordered, got total, touched phone to the keypad area, input pin on phone, tapped again and voila. Went waaaaay better than i hoped. Can't wait to keep using it.

Thanks for lunch Google!

That was my reaction too. I was surprised on how well it worked, kinda makes me think that every single app needs to be that fast and fluent. Flawless.

I used it today for the first time and it worked flawlessly. The guy behind the counter was pretty amazed since he had never heard of it. Tapped the phone to the sensor and entered my pin I believe, and it was done. Faster than paying with cash or credit card.

Amazing. I thought I'd be against using it, but it was so seamless, I'd use it again (with gift cards not credit cards - don't want those on my phone just yet).

It was a little (not a lot) faster than getting out my wallet, pulling out my credit card, swiping, put card back in wallet and wallet back in pocket. Obvioulsy, the security code you enter makes it not quite as fast as it could be, but that's fine as it protects it.

My concern is over the safety of google wallet with respect to other apps on your phone. For example, could a file system app steal the info in google wallet? While I assume (maybe that's a mistake) that it saves everything encrypted, at some point it has to be unencrypted.

I just used it at McDonalds. Was quick and easy. The cashier asked if it was the new iPhone! :p

Sorry if this is already answered somewhere, I don't have time to look through all the pages right now.

How do I get google wallet? I noticed it said from a sprint software update, but I have CM7. Is there anyway to get google wallet with CM7 installed?

Yep. CM7 nightly here and using Google Wallet with pleasant eye-popping action from all (including myself). There is a zip on xda NS4G dev forum to install Wallet.

You can change the lock time up to 30 minutes. Unlock Wallet in the checkout lane (or wherever). That way you just turn in the screen, hold it for a sec, and go.

Sounds like you have a good grasp on it... My question is - do I have to 'initialize' Wallet every time before I use it or can I just turn the phone on and tap it?

Unlock aka 'initialize' turn on screen and type your pin.

If your still in the time out period (from it's last use) it will not request your pin

I just used it for first time at Whataburger. The girl behind the counter said "You did not just pay for that with your phone!" Then she said "That is the coolest phone I have ever seen".

Okay, I have read thru all 12 pages and the stories are awesome. I especially like the "I'm from the future" comment (will have to use that one). I have not had a chance to use my GW so I'm still in the noob category. The question of "does a phone cover mess up the NFC" was asked a few times, but never answered. Anyone have an answer. I'd hate to have to pull the cover off to get my transcation to go thru on the first try.

I do not have to take off my case (TPU) to use NFC. It works for Google Wallet and NFC Tag Reader with the case on.

Thanks vansmack. Another question, I'm thinking about doing a touchstone mod to my cover (coming from a Pre and have 5 touchstone bases I'd like to continue to use). Anyone with this mod still have full functionality of the NFC?
