[Howto] Get to ED01 (Official Froyo) Quickly

EA28 Modem update.zip hangs

Following Adrynalyne's instructions....the regress to Eclair DL09 and update to Froyo ED01 seems very simple to do. Unfortunately...the update.zip ea28 modem update hangs on my Fascinate. :( The odin DL09 flash went as planned...then I copied the update.zip to the root of the sd card...booted into stock recovery...chose the update.zip. It gets about 1/3 of the way across on the progress bar and hangs right there forever. If you toggle into the text view...it shows the last step as updating modem...(still in progress I assume). Any idea as to how long it should take? This isn't a 20 minute or longer job to flash the modem to EA28....correct?

In general on my fascinate I haven't had any luck with OTA updates in the past or anything coming from the sd card...it seems the only thing that works on mine is odin updates for some reason.

Ideas to get past this guys?

Much appreciated!

** UPDATE ** - After about 30 minutes...the EA28 modem update.zip failed in the stock recovery console with "script aborted (no error message) E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip (Status 7) Installation aborted.

A few people are complaining about battery life. The grass may not be greener and I think it's worth it to wait a week and see what people are saying.

That may be, but has there ever been a ROM (or a phone) that didn't have somebody complaining about battery life? The only way I can find out whether it will work for me is to try it. It's easy enough to go back to SC 2.9.2 if I don't see an improvement.

Besides, it's been weeks since I flashed a ROM. I'm getting jumpy.

Fair enough. I'm running 2.9.2 now, but I want to try the OTA Froyo and see if it improves my battery life.

Here's my concern: I've got app data I don't want to lose. I can back everything up using Titanium Backup, but I can't restore anything until I'm rooted again (since Titanium requires root). So I'm just trying to figure out the easiest way to root after I install the OTA Froyo update.

I've seen various threads discussing this question, but I haven't yet seen a definitive answer: is there a reliable method for rooting stock ED01?

I believe this is the thread your looking for my friends..

Can't guarantee you won't lose your app data, but if you post your ? over there Adry might shoot you an answer..

EDIT: This is hilarious...I was posting so much I lost track of where I was at.. just disregard..this..its a link to this thread.. this is hilarious...

Perhaps this was a bad download or a bad transfer, try deleting the file , put the file on your card and try again

infinite loop error

I attempted to put on the EA28 update and when I used clockwork it didnt load it. Do I have to have the phone rooted for it to work correctly?

Where did you come from my man when you started this process? (ROM? SC 2.9.x?) (this is always important to include in your post :)

To clarify, you didn't choose "update.zip" but "choose .zip from sdcard, then selected the Ea28.zip (not sure on the file name)" wherever you saved it on your sdcard, when your in recovery mode, correct..

This will make a difference

I would reboot to DL09, then reboot to recovery then try to re-flash the modem via this method...

If it doesn't work, try re-downloading the ea28.zip and repeat.

I removed and re-added by downloading from an http server)the EA28 update.zip file and still get the same results. Perhaps the EA28 update.zip file in the post is defective? So next...I tried to skip the modem update and run the froyo update.zip to see if it will install without the EA28 update in place...of course...it will not. :( It errors out with a Status 7 Error in the update.zip file also and aborts the installation. So it appears that I need a working version of the EA28 update.zip file...anyone? Other ideas? :)

you cant have clockwork on your phone because it wont work,,, it is an official signed update.zip and it uses stock recovery. you will have to flash back to stock because having clockwork will stop the update

For me...I have tried to install the EA28 update.zip file with the stock recovery and with the clockwork recovery....neither work unfortunately.

At the part where a post in this thread suggested looking at this thread instead. :)

Sorry, didn't mean to alarm anyone ... I haven't started yet. After I get the family fed (I have priorities).

Haha this is my fault man..sorry..I was in a dizzy of android central...had like three pages of different threads going..

Hey bro , thanks for everything i really appreciate it. and you have been stepping up with great answers lately , thanks for supporting everyone

Do not feel dumb we all make mistakes especially with the excitment of it all. I suggest in the future making a titanium back up and then you can always restore data later on also a good thing to always do is backup your contacts to google and also your sdcard. ED01 and EC10 should be very close if not the same.

Sorry this happend

No problemo, It's like Christmas at Wal-Mart on the Fascinate Forum today..

I even posted a link to a thread, to the same thread I was in.that is worth a good laugh..

EDIT: Which is this thread...lol..

In the same boat over here. OTA updating to EA28 (from both DI01 and DL09) and updating manually to EA28 (using update.zip) from a fresh flashed DL09 both result in a lock-up on "Updating modem..." So frustrating.

Success. Flashed DI01, received OTA to Froyo, then got rooted again by following the instructions linked by DroidXcon. After restoring everything with Titanium Backup and fixing a few other glitches, I'm back up and running with all of my data.

Now I'm just hoping someone comes up with a procedure for de-Binging ED01, since I assume the original Eclair process won't work anymore. (Can I just freeze Bing with Titanium, I wonder?)

Thanks for the guidance. I have to say, I've been on the Internet (in one form or another) since 1989, and I can't think of another community this helpful and responsive.

Don't see why it wouldn't work in titanium. If I were doing it, it would be manually with root explorer. Go to your /system/app folder, find all the corresponding .apk files for apps you don't want, and move them to a "junk" folder on your sd card.
