HTC EVO 4G Software Update - 4.53.651.1

Re: Temporarily unrooted me.

Just an FYI on my experience with the update. I'm rooted

1. It would not install automatically. The package installer would stop and give an "!". Rebooting returned me to normal but no update.

2. I changed from clockworkmod recovery to RA. And then the update installed. Strange but true.

3. When I rebooted I got the famous "processcom.htc.launcher" force close loop. I was able to fix that with a bit of cleverness (if you have the same problem, let me know.) I strongly recommended that you clear data for HTC Sense under manage applications before installing this update.

3. I became unrooted! However, I was able to reroot no proble.

Now it is all working fine, it seems.

Good luck.

I'm on Clockwork Mod ... First time an update worked w/o having to roll-back to the original version of the OS as delivered in JUN '10 and applying all updates ... As noted in #3, this update did whack the recovery. Not a biggie though - reflashed the recovery and then reflashed root ... After that, good-to-go.

Finally got the update in Cleveland(Willoughby) & so far so good...haven't had any issues with SMS...hopefully it stays that way!!!

Ok so I have two questions:
1. Are they going to resolve the issue with battery drain?
2. Will this unroot my Evo?

Thanks.
I started a thread last night and someone replied that he updated his rooted phone and it worked fine (brave soul).

I just updated and my non-rooted phone has not blown up or anything.

Anyone having txting issues since the update? Sometimes when I go to txt, the keyboard will open, but the keys won't respond.
Try long press in the text field. Change imput to a different keyboard, send text, then go back and try your (Swype?) keyboard again.

Received the update this weekend (by manual check) here in NW Florida Panhandle. Swype will not work in landscape mode but does in other mode. WTF? Anyone else?
Again, if you haven't done a battery pull reset do so. Also go into a text entry field, long press to change keyboards, type a note with the standard keyboard, send a text or something, then go back to Swype and try it in landscape.

I got the update manually. Still a few sense reboots but a lot less than before. Of course they increased over time last time. No problems with sms or swype. Non rooted here.

Sent from my HTC EVO via Tapatalk

After 1 day with the update I have noticed my camera & camcorder apps both are a pink & solarized, anybody else have this problem & can people give me some idea to fix it.

I got the update on Sunday morning. I have had absolutely no sense reboots (I've stopped using ADW Launcher as well) since the update. They could come back of course, especially since they increased over time before, but so far, everything is pretty good.

My phone even seems a lot snappier overall as well (scrolling through home screens, exiting in and out of apps, etc, is all very fast).

So far, this has been a great update, imo...

Problem being it won't install? Try "Flash Alternative Recovery" in ROM Manager. Let us know how it goes.

Sorry for the dumb question but how do you "Flash Alternative Recovery"? I just rooted my phone for the first time a few days prior to this update coming out. I'm rooted with revolutionary on the stock rom. Only rooted to removed the bloat ware.

I have several apps that no longer work. I tap to start and there is a quick flash and then back to home screen...

I did the following tonite and it worked updating from 4.24.651.1 to 4.53.651.1. I originally used this method when I updated from a stock rooted (Unrevoked) Froyo 4.22.651.2 to Gingerbread 4.24.651.1 on my Evo 4G. I was able to update without flashing a new rom or wiping my phone and was able to keep (restore) root. This procedure also worked in the same way going from 4.24.651.1 to 4.53.651.1

VERY IMPORTANT:
-This assumes you:
- Have the latest Gingerbread OTA installed 4.24.651.1 on a stock rooted rom
- Have some experience working with flashing things in recovery
- Have NOT deleted/uninstalled ANYTHING in /system (and if you have, that you have re-installed them)
- Have defrosted any bloat you froze with Bloat Freezer or Ti Backup Pro
- Already have S-OFF (Originally used Unrevoked Forever or a version of Unrevoked3 that includes Forever. I am not sure if this procedure will work if you have recently rooted and used Revolutionary, although in theory it should.)

Now, save yourself some trouble and do a nandroid backup, then make sure that you have defrosted or restored any and all factory installed Bloatware. Otherwise the new OTA will not install properly. After the procedure, you can re-freeze, rename or delete the Bloatware again.

Now:

1. Go ahead and download the new OTA like normal on your phone, but DO NOT install it (after it downloads you should get the option to install now or not-choose NOT).
2. Using a file manager move (dont copy, move) the new OTA zip file from /cache to /sdcard (use Root Explorer if you can't find it with astro etc...because the OTA should download to /cache.)
3. Get a copy of Amon RA Recovery 2.3 and manually install it (place the Amon RA 2.3 PC36IMG.zip in root of your sd card (/sdcard) and flash by restarting your phone while holding power and volume down). Nothing against ClockWorkMod recoveries, or Rom Manager, but for some reason I had problems with them for this process and I tried several versions. So, save yourself some trouble and just use Amon RA 2.3.
4. After Amon RA 2.3 is installed, reboot into recovery. (reboot phone while holding pwr and volume down and choose recovery).
5. Select "Flash zip from SD Card">"Choose zip from sdcard", then find and flash the new OTA zip file that you put in /sdcard.
6. Let the OTA do it's thing, and after it's flashed and your phone is booted back up, verify that the OTA took (go to settings>about phone>software information). You should see Android Version 2.3.3, Software number 4.53.651.2 etc. Then go to settings > applications > and make sure to disable FastBoot (re-enable this when you are done with the whole process if you want to).
7. Reflash Amon RA 2.3 manually again...yes again (installing the OTA may break Amon RA recovery and will need to be reinstalled. See step 3).
8. Reboot (you can now delete or move the Amon RA 2.3 PC36IMG.zip from /sdcard if you want to.) and place the latest Gingerbread superuser file (attached) in the root of your SD card (/sdcard). Earlier superuser versions may not not work. Save yourself some trouble and just use this one (su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip)
9. Power off and reboot back into Amon RA 2.3 recovery.
10. Select "Flash zip from SD Card">"Choose zip from sdcard". Then find the attached Gingerbread compatible superuser file that you just copied to the /sdcard and flash it to restore root permissions to your phone. Reboot and you should be good to go.

Special thanks to modplan for posting the original guide (http://forums.androidcentral.com/ht...thout-flashing-new-rom-wiping-your-phone.html) and creating Bloat Freezer!

Like I said, I have DID try this tonite and it appears to have worked properly. I am updated to 4.53.651.1, still have root and S-OFF and all apps that I have tried including all apps that require root work fine.

Android noob here... Need some advice on this please. Unrooted still, I took 4.24.651.1 OTA some weeks ago as I wanted Gingerbread so I could tinker with an ADK. But then found that it was 2.3.3 (I need 2.3.4) and got a lot of bugs instead. Yesterday I was offered 4.53.651.1 OTA, and wondering if I should take it. Apparently still not 2.3.4, but should clear up some of the bugs (though may add more).

At this point, I'm just going to root it (and I understand there's something called Revolutionary that would let me do this). Should I bother with 4.53.651.1? Or is it required to root? And is there a 2.3.4 I can use once rooted? Will research revolutionary, but hoping someone here could offer some quick guidance. Much thanks.

If you plan on installing a different ROM after rooting, I don't think you should bother with the OTA update.

I have not kept up with the non-stock ROMs out there, but I'm sure there must be a few 2.3.4 ROMs available for the Evo. Check the Rooting/ROM forum: http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-rooting-roms-hacks/
