You can't root your phone without choosing a new rom like cyanogen, etc.,

I don't really want to read through the 25 pages of this thread but it's really easy to get the update. I don't know if this was already posted or not so please don't bash me. I'm only trying to help. Easiest way (in my opinion) is to open up a chat with ATT support from their website. When you talk to a support tech, ask them about pushing the update to your phone that allows it to install 3rd party apps. I asked the guy I was talking to about the side loading update and he had no idea what I was talking about, but when I told him what it actually did, the ability to install 3rd party apps, he knew exactly what was up.

He then told me to shut my phone off and after a few minutes, to boot it back up. He also told me it would be about 24-48 hours but will most likely be a lot quicker. Me, having mild ADD when it comes to technology, couldn't wait for it to show up because I wanted it now :D

To make the update show up, go into Settings>Applications>All. In the All tab, go to Certificate Installer and Clear Data, then go to Settings in the same All tab and press Clear Data. That should allow you to see the uncheck box to install third party apps. I've done this and it worked and I've done it on friend's phones and it's worked as well.

Hello group -
Waiting here for the update like a lot of others. I've had AT&T support on the phone, they've claimed to have pushed me the update, I get my "Complete Setup" prompt a few hours later and several times after and I hit "yes", I leave my phone off of wi-fi and on the mobile network, still nothing yet. I'll wait to see what happens... (have also been checking the "Check for Updates" option under AT&T Software Updates and Ive been getting "Server Unavailable" all day so Im suspecting thats why my update isnt getting here..)

But..

Just for curiosity I did look to look under Certificate Installer and my "Clear Data" button isn't even enabled. Is that something I should be concerned with?

Just had AT&T support on chat again. They claimed to have sent me the update again, and again said to wait 24 hours for the update. They said I'll get a "text message" with instructions....

We'll see what happens. I'm going to keep the phone off of wi-fi too since one of the reps told me that I needed to have the phone on the data network for this to work. Whether that's actually true or not I figure its a good idea to do that just in case.

my certificate clear data is disabled as well. That may very well be a ruse like a hard reset, especially considering the inexact menu path listed above.

I finally got the push on tuesday 6/28 after four days and two chats.

My wifi remained enabled the whole time--my tech told me it didn't need to be off.

I never received a text or any kind of prompt.

I left my phone on continuously until the check box finally appeared.

Given the huge variation in experiences, I'm guessing that the timing and success of the push appears to be dependent on the cell to cell characteristics of the local network and the complexity of the node path used by the xdm tool. For example, my home is in a region between two cells and as I walk through my house my mobile network routinely goes back and fourth between gprs, hsdpa+, and edge.

I noted the "inexact" menu path (nicely put ;) ), but I've seen the fix on XDA so Im guessing it does work - and Im also guessing it disables MMS (fixable only by a hard reset). Break an arm to fix a leg? Uh, no thanks ;) And might be that later loads of the device just don't have that ability on them any more for some reason. Which is fine, I had no plans to actually do the clear.

I guess we'll see....

I got the update automatically with no asking this morning.

You do need to have data on for it to work. The last time I tried to get the update was three weeks ago. I just moved and don't have WiFi so I've had data enabled for two days. I usually never have it on because I don't like to rack up data. So, leave your data on for a while and I hope that helps guys.

I just got my phone yesterday and after reading this post I checked and it said my software was up to date. I tried installing the app store but I don't have the check box that allows the unknown for third party apps.

Think I should call ATT?

I had to do a reset on my phone due to a image issue and before I was able install amazon apps and now there is no option......call att?

Not sure if anyone had mentioned this already, there is a simple way by just clearing the data in the Application settings - provider's and phone setting- then the Unknown Sources option will show up which will allow the install of Amazon apps and other non-market-listed apps.
No ATT update nor wonder machine is.needed. Thanks to the posting from the development forum.

With that you lose your mms ability. This has been talked about for awhile now.

Hello everyone. My name is Alan. I have great news if you guys want the sideload update from ATT and didn't get it. It's very simple. Call ATT (611) and ask to speak to someone in the PMC dept. When connected to them ask them to send you the sideload update from the Xdm link. They will send it while u r on the phone. Then go to the menu- settings-applications and put a check next to unknown sources and then u r ready to sideload apps! It's that easy. Took about 10 min. Couldn't have been any easier.
Man, thank you so much. It took me exactly 14 min. I talked with two reps. They had no idea what PMC was but they knew the data support department, so it took awhile with them. The ds knew what I was talking about and they finished the whole thing in less than 2minutes. Thanks again,:).
