Htc Inspire sideload update!!!!

Im amazed at all the different stories everyone gets from support. Obviously ATT does not know how to inform employees of proper procedure.
Considering the hundreds of hours I've spent on the phone with AT&T over the last 5+ years I can tell you that they very much do not know how to do this

Now it's just getting weird.

After waiting about 5 hours I tried the chat thing again...I was told this;
"The update has been sent. It may take 24-72 hours for delivery of the link to complete the download. "

So why is it some folks are getting it pushed to their phone before they're even off the chat/phone call...and some folks (like myself) are getting this 1-3 days crap?

C'mon AT&T!

It is most likely that the huge variation in experience has to do mostly with the weaknesses in the current cellular network architecture.

AT&T's ability to deliver a data update to a specific user within their network is limited and not unlike trying to water a single plant in your yard by selecting the spigot (GGSN/SGSN) and sprinkler set (BSC/BTS) that the plant is supposed to be closest to.

Imagine also that the watering system can tell if it has watered the plant in question over a certain time period. If the plant remains unwatered, then the system stops trying and the attempt fails.

The closer you are to the spigot, the more likely you are to get watered and the more quickly it will happen.

OK.. chatted with them AGAIN (still haven't got it yet). The latest thing I've been told (and its come from more than a couple reps so it may actually be true) is that some phones just aren't getting (or arent installing) the update, and there's a spreadsheet there listing the IMEIs of those phones...
Oy..
I switched over from Verizon because the Inspire was so cheap ($0 with my Costco discounts), and since everyone I know is on AT&T I could use their lowest phone plan and I'd basically have unlimited calling). I decided that the 4G speed difference between the carriers would be something I could tolerate since I only had 3G with Verizon, I'm mostly in wi-fi available places, and AT&T's 3 to 4 MB is still quite fast. But this stuff with this sideloading update is .. ahem.. "male bovine digestive ash"....

Wow, that is so much bull. That's why I hate some AT&T Reps. That is absolutely incorrect. There may have been certain devices that wouldn't get the update, but not particular phones. All Inspires were supposed to get the update. I've seen several people that have been able to have it pushed to them after speaking with a Rep. The key, I've found, is that to get any useful help, you have to find the right Rep (which is extremely hit-and-miss). Most (in my experience) are robots, that don't have any idea what they're doing or talking about.

There's a way to manual enable sideloading if you're interested.

I can confirm this method works on stock, unrooted devices. First, download HTC Sync (if you haven't already), it installs the proper drivers for your device. Then enable USB Debugging (Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging). I haven't been stock in a while, so I don't remember if that's exactly how to get to it. Plug in your phone and run the program that the thread above provides a link to, and follow the directions provided in the thread link above.

I may call them later today and mention the "spreadsheet" and see what reaction I get.

Whats annoying about this is that I have an Android app I need to use for work that isn't a market app (no its not Pac Man) ;)

I forgot to mention that the only thing that the imei reference might refer to is the order in which devices received the update. I think they were pushing them out in bunches.

Well, you can sideload via a computer/laptop. Google "Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine", it's a thread somewhere around these forums. It's the method I used before I rooted.

Well, just chatted with another person. According to him, yes there is a spreadsheet of IMEIs having trouble with the update, and the problem seems to be regional. Not sure if that means regionally distributed devices, or people accessing through certain regional servers (or if it is, again, just BS). According to him, they're working on resolving this issue by "the end of the week". Is this more BS? I don't know. Since he did say the problem is actually due to problems on their end and didnt just "send me an update" and tell me to wait 24 hours, I guess I tend to believe him. Then again he might figure if he accepts blame it'll quiet me down for a few days. Who knows. At least he told me I dont have to be constantly off of wi-fi and on the data network to get the update. According to him I'll get a text message from AT&T once this is fixed with instructions how to fix it. Maybe at that point I'll need to be on the 4G network. Hooodafuggnose :(.

Ok, the spreadsheet of individuals having trouble seems plausible.

i can tell you that after 6 online tech chats, 2 calls to customer support and 3 transfers to the data support group(the 1st transfer to data support was for business internet data--wtf??) .. . . .im convinced not a single 1 of them have a flipping clue in hell what theyre talking about.
Ive been trying since june 10th to get this update and have quoted information from this thread to them live over the phone and i swear if i could see them, i know theyd have that "deer in the headlights" look as to what im saying to them.
I supposedly have a call back scheduled for thursday afternoon(tomorrow) because the woman told me that she had been on the xdm link so long that it logged her out and since numerous attempts to send the update to my phone had been made, that it would require a 72 hour wait before she could try again. I told her i called total bs on that, but id give her the benefit of the doubt. But that if it wasnt resolved and sent to my phone on thursday, that some unlucky sales rep would be having an inspire phone along with their service placed in some most unpleasant place.

I have never heard this many varying excuses and total loads of crap from different supposed customer service reps in my life. It just boggles the mind.

How many of you out there that have not recieved the push or had signficant delays (at least 24hours like me) are using their device way outside the area (area code) in which the main account was originally established?

for me personally, i had the phone activated locally(current area code) and use it locally. Ive been in the same place (work) every time ive attempted to get the update. So not only the same area code, but same zip code, street, bldg and office.

list of sample excuses ive gotten over the last month:
1. its been sent. wait 24 hours.

2. its been sent. wait 24-48 hours.

3. ATT is having server hardware problems in the DC area, thats why im not getting the update. but it should get pushed to my phone automatically once server issues are resolved. that should be 24-48 hours.

4. Your acct notes show that the update has been sent several times, therefore it should be on your phone now.

5. You have the wrong data support group, let me transfer you.

6. please turn on wifi.

7. please make sure wifi is turned off.

8. hard reset your phone, then reboot. update should appear in the applications setting menu.

9. you will need to perform a factory reset and reboot in order for the update to show up in the applications settings menu.

thats most of them thus far. we'll see what if any new material i get come tomorrow afternoon.

My situation is almost identical to this with a few more numbered items thrown in, such as:

10. turn wi-fi on (because the download is so massive it will take up to several days to complete and therefore must use wi-fi)

11. 2 additional wait 24-72 hours with callbacks

and my fave......12. buy my apps instead of trying to get them for nothing through amazon

oh and I am located in WV.

I became convinced a long time ago that no one that we can actually reach knows anything.

As I sit here at this very minute, according to my online chat rep (4th chat since Saturday) my update is pending...she's trying to get it to push out (I had to turn wifi off...wtf?)

Ignore my last post. It was nothing....total FAIL by AT&T so far.

Somebody remind me again why we (as Android users/buyers) are stoked on a fragmented OS and providers who can't seem to get their **** straight?

/feeling extremely cynical today

I have yet to get the update. And I do not feel like going through the hassle of ATT tech people. Besides the method that messes up MMS, has anyone found out any other way to get the update?

i used the online chat yesterday, and spent about 5 minutes with the at&t rep. they knew exactly what i was asking for and asked that i turn the phone off then on. after i turned it back on, it had the sideload update. maybe i just got lucky and got a rep that knew what they were doing?

HTC proved a little more helpful.

Dial *#*#2432546#*#*

Your dialer WILL close, you should get a notification that "check in succeeded"

Try checking for updates then.

Do this BEFORE you check for updates sinc eyou can only check once a day

Note: I couldn't check it because, wouldn't you know it, I checked for updates already.

I just contacted ATT through the online chat AND performed the "check in" quoted above. Not sure if it was just a good rep or the conjunction of the two. This particular rep asked for my IMEI number right away as well.

I had received the sideloading update before I was even finished chatting with her! This was at least the third time I've contacted ATT about the issue, and I was getting ready to give up. Best of luck to everyone!

My experience as well. Completed in under 10 minutes.
