HTC One: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

You don't have to have one if you are very cautious with your phone, but you never know when sand or other contaminates might find their way into your pocket and scar your screen. Though they are not always necessary, but they are also not a scam.

Tests on Gorilla Glass: Truth About Gorilla Glass - Drops, Tests, Composition - YouTube

So...she tested Gorilla Glass scratch resistance using a screen protector on the phone, cuz its 'similiar'? Then proceeds to drop it which cracks the screen protector, but not the phone...then drops, drops, drops it until she gets a crack...at that point the integrity of the screen is done...every test after that is irrelevant.

And yes, if you run it over with a car...you deserve a broken phone!

We can certainly all have our preference on screen protectors...but that video shows nothing.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal, but...

I have a Thunderbolt that I've had for about 18-20 months now. I'm not terribly hard on my phones, but I did drop it once so it took a glance off a rock on the way down. At the time, I had a screen protector (just a cheapo one - like 5 bucks for a 3-pack) that took a pretty deep scratch. I had bought a three pack of the cheapo screen protectors so I just peeled it off so I could see the screen again and a few weeks later took the time to put the second protector on.

The screen protector changes the feel of the screen a bit and makes it a little harder to clean (the oleophobic coating isn't as nice). I don't see much visual difference but in full sunlight it is a tad more reflective than the Gorilla Glass. And, of course, I can't install the consarned things without a dust mite or two working their way in.

But when I think what that rock might have done to the original Gorilla Glass.. I'll pay the price. I really don't know it's there 99.9% of the time, and it does me no good 99.99999% of the time. But that one drop...

If it had hit a little harder, it might have cracked the glass, and at that point ain't no screen protector going to help. And maybe the drop I made was a one-in-a-trillion. But for my money it was a sawbuck well-spent.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

The answer is absolutely yes. Glass will scratch. A $20 investment on a screen protector is worth it.
Glass does not scratch easily. Even normal glass. Modern phones will almost never scratch unless it is a very hard surface like rocks (sand) or metal.

To this day I do not understand people that refuse to buy screen protectors.
I did not have a screen protector on my Droid 1. To this day the screen has virtually no scratches at all despite very heavy use.

The only reason to use a screen protector IMO is maybe at the beach or anywhere else with a lot of sand or dirt (dirt is just small sand, and it will scratch). In an urban/office environment, screen protectors are useless IMO.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

And there are screen protectors that look and feel great so that's no excuse not to have one.

It isn't a matter of "excuse". It's a matter of not liking screen protectors. No one here HAS to come up with an 'excuse' that satisfies you because that's just everyone's personal preference. I don't mind them TOO much, but i'm not going to spend $300 searching for this elusive, 'perfect' screen protector. At that point I might as well have went without and bought 3 replacement phones through insurance if mine got scratched.

Also, if there IS a screen protector that looks like it's not even there, and feels smooth just like the stock glass, if that protector gets scratched whats the difference between that and having a scratch on the glass? I know so many people who NEVER change their protectors even if they're damaged. I know the idea is that you get it switched out if that happens, but most people I know do not do that. So they have a phone that looks like the screen is damaged even though it's just their ugly screen protector, and their screen would have held up better without the protector that got all gummed up and gouged.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

Seems a simple gambit - if you crack your screen enough that it bothers you I've seen no indications that it can be fully repaired by the various tech services that typically handle cell phone damage, which will lead to a replacement. If you're insured that will cost you your deductible, if not - the price of a new handset.

Nearly any screen protector does a better job of protecting from scratches than the unadorned screen - though only some of the more expensive ones promise device protection from cracks due to falls/impact.

Share your opinions! What are your experiences with them? Does the HTC One's glass scratch easily? If you use one t kind? Is it working well?

I think people who insist on screen protectors see the scratches they get in the protectors and assume they would have scratches in the glass had they not used the protector. It's pretty ignorant to assume that but if people like scratched screens that attract dirt I say let them screen protect, just keep it off my screen.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

I've had my Note 2 for around 6 months now, and I personally think that installing a screen protector is the best investment I ever made on this phone, after 2 weeks of buying it I accidently dropped it outdoors in a car wash while trying to take a photo of my car =S
The screen protector got scratched real deep, but after replacing it everything is fine!
a month after that I decided that the note 2 screen was way too big to be private, so I installed a privacy screen protector (which dims the screen a bit) but does the job just as great... I have had a few more drops since then... in some cases outdoors, and so far no screen damage (thank God).
If I did not have the screen protector on my screen it would have been cracked a long time ago...

How do you know that whatever scratched the screen protector would have scratched the screen?

I just don't think there are any screen protectors out there that are as hard as the screen.

Some of the newer glass screen protectors are glass. Now we just need a diamond screen protector ;).

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

If you're going to throw down a few hundred bucks on the latest smart phone, you should definitely put down an extra 20 to keep it safe.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

I've never used screen protectors on my phones. Yes you pick up small superficial scratches as time goes on, but I hate the way screen protectors feel. Not a good tradeoff in my opinion.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

The only screen protectors I ever encounter are the factory installed ones that Sony puts on their phones. I can't stand that they do that.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

Nope, I used to think I needed one, yet they always made the screen look hazy, or harder to read in the sun. The screen was never as responsive as it was stock and they always gradually peeled off and/or had dust/dirt trapped under them and I hate the way they look. Its never been worth it to me any time I've had one and I've not had an issue since stopping use of them.

I'm proud to announce that I've now been screen protector free for over a year and thru three phones without a scratch. All it takes is a little forethought and remembering that you have your phone. Don't shove it into a pocket with keys or change, easy, done. If your a woman with a purse, reserve a pocket for it. Save some money and enjoy your screen the way it was meant to.

The funny thing is, your keys and change likely won't scratch the glass. It's only hard things like sand that will scratch gorilla glass. I put my phone in my pocket with my keys all the time. No problem.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

Every screen protector I've had ruined the phone's responsiveness to my hands. Haven't used them in 4 years and haven't had a single problem with any of the 3 phones I've owned since.

It's just a preference thing. Nobody is "wrong" for using/not using a screen protector.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

I used to be a screen protector user but the downside for me is the lack of oleophobic coating on these screen protectors. So while my screens have stayed scratch free on my previous phones I was constantly wiping them down after an contact with my ear/cheek or even hands. Unlike some, I have a very oily head which is exacerbated by the fact that I shave my head. The opposite is true with my hands, which are so dry from constant hand washing. So the solution there is lotion. Between lotion on the hands and an oily head my screen protectors always had some sort of oily imprint on them, sometimes even after a quick wipe on my shirt or jeans. I've had the HTC One naked for almost three weeks now, in and out of my pocket all day, and not a scratch. But just as importantly the screen almost always is oil free. So no more screen protectors for me.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

For me, No. My last few phones never had any problems. I didn't even have a case for my last phone. It had chips and scratches all over it from drops, but the screen never had a scratch on it. I had screen protectors at one time. It would get scratches on it from time to time, or the edges would start to get the air bubble look. I figured better safe than sorry. After I ran out once and just never really bothered, I haven't since then. I got a case for my recent phone, I'm concerned more about dropping and cracking a screen than I am about scratches.

I'm sure you'll get different answers depending on people situations, commutes and jobs. I drive my own vehicle to an office job, so my phone is fairly safe on an average day. If I was still riding public transport and climbing towers at oil refineries, then I might feel differently.

I agree I think screen protectors are need for certain people and not needed by others.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

No to a screen protector.. I use a case and put in my front right pocket facing my leg. Nothing else in my pocket and I've not scratched prev screens with gg or higher.

Re: Do you honestly need a screen protector?

I hate cases and especially hate screen protectors. I haven't used them on my last few phones. Usually the bodies of my phones end up getting a little scuffed up or dinged over the months and years, but so far ::::knock on wood::::: never anything severe. It's probably meant they've been worth a little less at the end, but the happiness of using "naked" phones more than makes up for it IMO.

I do follow some basic precautions like being conscious of what's in my pockets or other containers they're in, and I do NOT take them to the beach, they stay in the car. Other than that there's not much special treatment I give my phones.

A lot of people like to say "What's the point of having a slim/stylish phone if you just cover it?" Well, I don't cover it. Never have, probably never will.

I'm tying to move away from cases, but I am scared to set this thing down anywhere. Won't it dent or scratch easily on the back?
