HTC One (M8) camera discussion

After all these awesome examples of how great the camera is on forums I decided to give photos a go myself using HDR.
I've come to the conclusion the camera is great but I suck at taking pictures ;)
All my HDR shots in daylight are blown out completely and all my low light HDR shots are dreadful.
In fact my low light shots are all terribad.

Not blaming the camera though, just the knuckle dragger using it ;)
Wish I had some of the talent shown on these forums, but it does go to show that it's not the camera that takes a good picture.

This is the case with most people complaining about the camera. You are at least smart enough to come to that conclusion!

I did take this in pitch black at 9pm and I've got to say I'm impressed.
The picture isn't going to win any awards (yeah ok it's rubbish) but it still showed a lot more than I could see and I guess shows just how well it does work in (very) dark conditions :)

And this shows the detail the phone can show up close.

Ok. What expensive DSLR camera did you use to take these?! :p

I've also got a couple of erm 'not award winning' photos ;) which show off the low light capability and the detail of the camera. Neither shot has had any processing at all. The one at the cafe I also took a version of with the s4 which was dark and grainy. The HTC cafe shot is lovely and clear and detailed. The finger one also shows the natural ability of the camera to blur the background without using the ufocus filter thing image.jpg image.jpg

Hmm the pics on the phone are way clearer than the dumbed down ones this site has posted. You'll have to take my word for it :)

I clicked the 1st one and it popped up a full-sized pic. That marble table looks really nice in that pic.

Well thanks but bear in mind the original pic is 1.6 MB and the one posted here is about 250kb you'll get an idea of how much better the actual original shot is in terms of resolution and clarity. The camera on the m8 is excellent. It's such a shame so many people have been almost brainwashed about the amount of pixels a camera has being vitally important to the clarity of a photo . I thought that died out years ago.

These "brainwashed" individuals lack the true KNOWLEDGE about megapixels and photography in general. :)

Yes true. But the trouble is those people are most people. I'd like to think the worries about the m8 camera will go when people can see the quality of the shots on the camera. But most people think 'it has to have the biggest amount of pixels I can get' and won't even bother looking.

That's because all the other phone manufacturers are in a megapixel arms race with cameras and megapixel number is an easy way to compare "quality" of photos.

Had some problem with m7 compare to g2,s4,z1 but now on m8 I have start take my pictures little different and it works great. Only problem I still have is when i need long range pictures and want to zoom, but we all know that is the pixels that is little short on that front. But overall the camera have been a pleasure to use if you do it right..:)

Went to AT&T yesterday to check out both the S5 and the M8. I have the M7 now. First I just don't like touchwiz but I wanted to see how good the camera was on the S5 and thought that if it was that much better I might try it out. Both the S5 and the M8 have negatives and positives on the camera. The M8 was faster at taking pictures and would focus better but it did have the problem with the light being overexposed but with the manual setting i think that can be improved. The S5 handled the exposure just fine but I could not get it to focus very good ( when i zoomed in on some of the pictures it almost looked like a double image) and it just made some colors look to bright. All the pictures I took where in the store because they had the security cable on them. The resolution was a little better on the S5 when zoomed in but not that big of a difference. Overall I think the M8 was the more reliable camera based on the conditions that I used them in (can't say about outdoor shots). I will post some samples latter from both phones.

S4 or S5? You started out saying 5 and then the rest of your post was 4.. Just curious.

Yup, most people who complain about the lack of zoom-in capability (due to low MP count) of M8 don't realize that to get a good zoom-in pic you have to have a well focused original to begin with. And higher MP count cameras take longer to focus/process and that makes them more susceptible to blurriness (not due to bad focus but to non-steady hands). It's mostly a trade in. Not that I don't like high MP count camera.

Nevertheless, M8 camera performs relatively poor in bright daylight (or some light sources in the frame) condition, as it's got too good an ability to gather in gathering light in the frame, if you have not tried to maneuver around it. Traditionally when taking pictures one would try to avoid facing a light source/sun, or have the sun behind you. It still applies here. But we all know it's not avoidable in everyday life. In some of those conditions you might be able to alleviate overexposure simply by selecting "backlight" mode (though it may darken the foreground), instead of having auto setting.

Facing the sun/light. This morning at the waterfront of Tennessee River.

With the sun behind (kinda). Also at the waterfront of Tennessee River this morning.

Edit: forgot to mention that both photo were taken w/o any editing or setting (all auto settings), even the focus was auto (i.e. in the middle).
