HTC One (M8) camera discussion

The camera is fine. Jeez I wish people would let it go. The day someone can prove to me that they need more than what this camera is capable of is the day I will care. No need to go OTT with defending it, and no need to bash it either.

Totally agree, people buying this phone aren't dumb, are smarter imo because they understand MP is not everything. I bought this phone after side by side comparison with S5 yesterday. This phone offers everything unique, different from "norm" these days, and kudos to HTC for that

Ahh unique. Best word to sum it all up.

Honestly I was looking in the s5 photo section and I don't know if it's just user error, but most of those pics didn't look very good to me. A lot seemed washed out and very noisy. Could still be too early to tell but so far I'm not impressed

Wow, you weren't kidding. After all the bashing the M8 received in anticipation of the S5, there's certainly some crow to be eaten. Under exposed subjects, and a haze in some of the properly exposed pics. Just as much light blow out as the M8. I still think Samsung makes very capable cameras and they tend to favor neutrality, vs the hyped nature of Apple and HTC. But, seeing those pics further bolsters my sentiments about the M8 having a unique and outstanding camera. I'm not trying to put down S5 owners, but rather say that it's clear I made the right choice for my personal tastes

Yup, unique because no one else offers features like Ultra-pixel dual camera, Zoes, beautiful metal body with slick design, great software, and biggest of all BoomSound.

Basically. And I'm not saying the phone doesn't have its quirks, but at least it does it in style. And it works. Excellently.

It just comes down to how you use the camera on a phone really. That's a great food picture so if you tend to take macro stills this will likely be a great camera. Unfortunately, most of my pictures involve my 10 year old and you almost never have the luxury at school, sports, etc of being 6 feet or closer. I played with the M8 and S5 extensively yesterday at the store and the results were as you would expect. The M8 was fast, clear and crisp as long as your subject was close. Take a picture of a display rack clear on the other side of the store, go to the album and zoom in and the differences were very obvious. The M8's were blurry and soft while the S5's were fine. Zoom in on the S5 photo's and you could read the words on the packaging. The M8 zoomed picts confirmed that there were in fact packages on the other side of the store, but that's about it.

I picked up the phone yesterday fully expecting to be generally happy but underwhelmed with the camera. I was wrong. It takes great pics. I will agree that it has a lower ceiling than other phones, the g2 or perhaps the s5 (meaning that the best from each phone is likely to be better on on the lg or the Samsung), but if you just need to whip your phone out of your pocket and take a quick pic of something that is immediate I believe that the one will take the BETTER picture more of the time. I think this reveals a flaw less in HTC's thinking than it does in the way reviews are done. If one sets out with both phones to take a compare staged shots the M8 will likely not win. If someone just carries each phone around for a week and then decides which they prefer I believe it will do better. I certainly prefer it to my G2. Of course, this is much more subjective and therefore does not lend itself to reviews. It's a less marketable camera, but I'm not sure that it's always worse, and for a lot of us, it might be better.

I also believe that reviewers, and people in general, are more prepared to punish a generally superior product that they believe falls behind the competition in one area than they are to lay into a less competent (but generally average) product they believes excels in one or two areas. Which is a pity.

I mentioned this same reasoning earlier in the thread. Then I was ripped to shreds after. Be ready!!

Made another test on a whim while I was driving this late morning.

I snapped a shot while driving-- one hand on the wheel and the other operating the phone camera. I have small hands, not easy to do hold the phone and hit the cam button. Certainly all auto modes. Then I snapped another shot right away. Note that I didn't see what I was taking as I had to pay attention to the road (though it's low traffic and no car was behind me). Normally I don't use my phone cam while driving, just wanted to test how quick/well it is to take a random focus on a moving scene. Here's the 2 photos I took seconds apart while moving @35-40mph.

Edit: posted wrong photos and clicked wrong button. Had to re-post the photos.
Try to zoom in and you'd see they're not very well focused shots. But, they were taken randomly while on the move.

Ummm, maybe if I used S5 cam for the photos in my last post, the number on the roadside mailbox would be readable when zoom in, right???

Don't know where to start, criticizing this cam for lack of zoom in capability isn't new. It is a fair argument as zoom-in may come in handy in certain situations (how if you just had Boston bombers on your phone?) However, there're situations a big MP count photo may not be as clear/sharp as if taken by M8. Please distinguish the difference.

And it's good to know now that some think M8 can snap a quick decent shot better than its competition. The impression used to be that it seemed to take many arrangements/settings to get a good photo out of it for it to be a good daily point and shot camera. Anyway, M8 is not low ceiling. Its ceiling is pretty high if you know a few things about lighting and photo-shooting. And ever heard of that, good photography takes a lot of practicing? Play with your camera as much as you can. It doesn't cost anything.

I agree, fyi, don't think it "low ceiling" just maybe lower than other phones. I'm far from a photography expert, though, so my opinion is very much average user.

To everyone who is bashing the M8 camera, I have a couple of points to make.

Not trying to criticize anyone, but let's think about this.

  1. Resolution: if you're not blowing up your pics to 8x10" or larger, why does it matter? Seriously, who does this? If you want an 8x10 or larger photo, you might want to think about a good p&s or dslr. Is it because it's fewer megapixels than the competitors?
  2. Low light and indoors. Very good...much better than most everything else out there.
  3. Image size: this may be a guess, but are 4 megapixel "ultrapixel" images smaller than 13-16 megapixel images from other smartphone cameras? I assume they are (perhaps wrongly), which would mean they would save storage space. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't mean to automatically dismiss anyone's interest in the camera, but for me personally, a smartphone camera is just for fun and online sharing...maybe a slideshow here and there. I guess I'm just old fashioned, because most reviews I read tend to spend more time on the camera than any other aspect of the phone. That is silly to me, because the camera is more of an afterthought and something for fun in my life. I will use my DSLR for more serious photography.

Peace.

Re: To everyone who is bashing the M8 camera, I have a couple of points to make.

Why are people still defending the camera... Why they feel so hurt by the bad reviews.
The camera in the HTC One or M8 is behind any other top smartphone. Now just deal with it. There are other things where the HTC One shines and other phones lack. That's it.

he does make some valid points. Most of the bashing comes from very well uneducated people who know NOTHING about camera technology.
