HTC One (M8) camera discussion

The camera is only bad if you want something that replaces a real camera (impossible), which I don't

I love having depth of field control and low light performance

Thanks guys! By chance would another camera app help? I think I purchased one a long time ago.

It's a deal breaker for me...phone is nice in all other areas but this camera is just horrible. I was hoping it would be "good enough" but every pic I have taken is over exposed and any light is blown out regardless of any setting I choose. Bummer, it was a nice phone otherwise.
Your pics are not representative of the M8. Something is seriously wrong there as I couldn't get mine to do that if I wanted to. If I were you I'd reset or exchange it because that's not characteristic of the M8 at all and you're missing out on a good cam.

Agreed.
I've taken some messy pictures with the M8 but not that messy.
And the mess was generally my fault, not the camera's - Those photos look very wonky.

Thanks guys...I am hoping it's an issue with the camera. When taking these photos, all I am doing is touch to focus and shoot with default settings. Tried night mode, lowered the EV and they came out worse. I am only successful when the photo is taken outside and the only light is from the sun. I have seen what this camera is capable of based on the beautiful pics in this thread, but unable to duplicate. I did a factory reset earlier and tried some night shots and got about the same result.

Those photos were pretty bad. Your phone might just be defective. I took night shots and similar light situations and they turned out pretty good. You can see all the photos I have taken with my M8 here: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjWWKCTP

Thanks Raziel, indeed great photos. I am starting to think the camera is defective as well.

Here is the thing. Would you rather the lights not be blown and the shadows show no detail? If so, adjust exposure down to achieve that. After doing that, you could use snapseed to pull up the shadows a bit.

How do you think other phones would take those pics? Most would probably expose the lights better, but lose all foreground detail. This is what people don't understand, if you take that shot with an iphone or sg5 it you won't do better, just different.

Thanks, I guess I don't understand, which is why I asked for help...all I know is so far this camera has taken terrible photos and asked for suggestions since all the photos in this thread have been pretty solid. I wasn't expecting the best, just better than what I have experienced so far. I will try snapseed, thanks for the suggestion.

Re: M8 Camera

The new HTC One bought it a new camera technology but sadly it seems to have many problem. Total Blur. The bokeh effects looks so unreal and fake. Moreover, it doesn't take good snaps without flash. When it was compared with Nokia Lumia 930, it sadly stands behind. Wish, they fix them :(

Since when has bokeh ever been real?
It's an artifact from photography, it's a desired artifact all the same but it's never been real.
And the whole point of bokeh is to sharpen the foreground by making the background blurry with a geometric pattern giving a depth of field effect.

I think if you look through the photos in these threads on cameras you'll see the ufocus effect, whilst not perfect all the time is anything but broken.

Getting seriously sick of people bashing this camera when they haven't even used it and/or are just trying to troll.

The camera does take low light without a flash, may not be noise free but it can take pictures in near darkness without a flash and still see more than the human eye.

Wow the Lucia icon camera is kind of amazing. Too bad Nokia/Windows Phone camera software almost ignores videography. Main reason I skipped it.

I have a serious problem with lights in my pics...not sure if this is expected or of there is something I can do to fix it. Whether it's a lamp, ceiling light or a street light, it adds a lot of blur, no clarity whatsoever and makes the pics look terrible. Anything I can do to improve it?

Hopefully this comparison helps in some way. The pic is dark because I pulled half the bulbs, it's not the cam. I didn't take this with the intent of showcasing the cam, It's just one of the first ones I snapped after opening the box. I tap-focused the tile because it gave a nice level of exposure. One thing I always recommend is that people tap various areas of the screen to let the camera re-calculate so you can choose for yourself which is best. It has a super-wide range of exposure. If you don't get a resolution from trying that, yous may indeed be faulty.

I have no idea where you got that impression but there's a lot of photographic evidence against it.

Had the phone for a few days and my take on the camera is that it's pretty good in most situations. HDR mode could be better and in situations with both extremely bright and dark subjects you're gonna have to choose wisely where you focus. If you're into post editing then you can fix most of the problems regarding blown out photos. The fact that it's only 4mp sucks when you're trying to take a detailed shot of anything 25ft or further away. But I think the tech is promising and hope it'll lead to better tech in the future. I can see how it'll be a deal breaker for some but for me it's no big.

Interesting though is that a my cousin went from the M7 to to the S5 and she said that the only thing she misses is the camera and wishes the S5 had the M8 camera. Different strokes from different folks man.

If you wish a real good camera than you must buy a professional camera like a Nikon or Canon but that is very expensive

Thanks Bowie, I see what you're saying and see what I was doing incorrectly. Here are a couple of pics where I first just focused in the middle then shot, then focused on the lights and shot. I can mess with it a little more and find the best setting. Thanks everyone for your input...very much appreciated.

Hi Kibbster !

Ah ! I think you didn't get me clearly :) Bokeh effect isn't real and that's something every kiddo know :) It's based on Shallow depth of field effect. Well, for instance : Take the example of bokeh effect in DSLR. They create bokeh effect for parts of the scene that lie outside the depth of field. Even though the bokeh effect isn't real , the processed image in a DSLR doesn't look fake or unreal. Does it ? Definitely No ! The image looks 100& real and original without any problem with brightness or other problems.
But, the HTC M8's blurring algorithm is not very consistent. Moreover , the power of blurring and creating bokeh effect is very less.

Hope you understood what I really meant. And for your kind information , I'm not here to troll HTC or Android instead I just tried to make the stuff clear . I'm a Android fan boy too :)

Nice talking to you :)

Considering the M8 isn't a DSLR I think the example you have shown is excellent and something the M8 can be proud of.
Is it as good as a DSLR?
No.
But how many M8s could you buy for the price of a good DLSR and the DSLR is pretty rubbish at being used as a phone.

Re: M8 Camera

Why did HTC introduce the dual camera technology ? Yes, to include an awesome camera with it. And how do you expect a DSLR to be a phone. All tech gadgets has its own features and facilities :) An WP is pretty rubbish at being used as a car !! Haha ! Do you expect me to say that :)
Take it from me, HTC One M8 is one among the best phone that live now .. [ 2014, till now ] . It has a good design with awesome power saving features etc.But , as far as I know it's camera need to be improved :) I speak from the information I get from trusted sources and my friends. I've not yet tired M8 since it isn't available in my locality . Hope you understand.

Anyway ! Let's end up !! :D :D

I agree it still could do with a little work to make it perfect, but the bokeh effect is actually excellent for a phone, it just can't compete (and nor should it) with ?000s worth of dedicated DLSR.

Re: To everyone who is bashing the M8 camera, I have a couple of points to make.

instead boasting the ultrapixel, HTC should just have boasting about how fast the camera can be
how crazy fast it can freeze movement of toddler running around indoor lowlight at night
that's how M8 camera excels
just my 2cents

I own 1020, and I've played with the M8 quite some time
I do envy the speed (autofocus especially)

One thing I dislike from the M8
Sunny, bright, daylight, outdoor sky alwaysssss overexposure and overblown
They're just white .... plain white
Sure there is HDR, manual mode down 0.5 notch, exposure lock, etc ... but it's totally kill the meaning of having auto
Even HTC admitted this over exposure issue

Hopefully they'll put out a fix then, if auto mode needs adjusting it can be done through a software update.
I also think if HTC can fix the exposure issues then this camera would be nigh on perfect IMHO.
