HTC One (M8): Camera Lens Issue

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

So glad I found this thread! I am experiencing the same issues as you guys. I wasn't sure if I'd have to replace the lens protector myself but I'm going to go the toothpaste route. So far it looks good!

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I'm on my second device returned the first one for Bluetooth issues and yes it had the lens issue which I fixed. The second device also developed the lens issue a few weeks after receiving it and I fixed it. Don't A$$ U ME about what others know. Replacing a device for this issue is simply a waste of time and money that's a fact not opinion but fact.

Ok!

Mines giving me the same issue. HTC will send me a refurbished replacement phone. Anyone else do this? Would you do this first before trying to fix it yourself?

As others have attested to, there's not much point in sending it in, as regardless of whether it's a refurbished one or a new one, it's probably going to have the lens issue recur in a couple months. It's an easy fix and it's highly unlikely to mess anything up, so I recommend you try it yourself.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

What makes you think HTC has an updated lens that they replaced it with. If you have evidence then by all means let us know and perhaps sending it in could become a viable option. But if they don't have an updated lens where they've removed or improved the film, it will indeed happen again given time.

When my phone was being returned to me, HTC confirmed through their tech support dept, that the rear camera lens had been upgraded to resolve the defective coating issue. I don't expect anyone in here to accept that as I know many are super geeks and know far better than any meandering tech support guy from HTC. However, I will not EVER deface, or modify my phone just because it seems to work. I'd rather keep returning my defective phones. Then, when it comes time to make an upgrade decision, I will take all matters into account and decide if the issues I had with HTC are worthy of my loyalty to them. There seems to be a bunch of great options out there and, honestly, I'm getting tired of returning my HTC phones for defective camera related issues. I could tolerate it a little easier if the HTC cameras on the m7s and the m8s had no rivals, but the cameras do lag behind many of the other smartphone cameras in several areas. I love the camera software and that makes it difficult to part with them.

I have done this for the defective lens coating. I've had my camera back about a month now and I'm not noticing any scratches to speak of.

I wouldn't call removing a coating that is already falling off defacing or modifying. While I wouldn't call it a true "fix" because the coating is not restored, five minutes for a free "fix" is certainly less of a hassle than returning the phone for something many may consider minor.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Hi guys,

The toothpaste + Q tip trick, do you also do that to the front facing camera and the DUO camera?

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Nope, no need, as those has crystal clear glass.

Sent from my HTC One M8

Mm.. but i see the same 'markings' as per the camera lens cover, on the DUO camera and front facing cam.
I tried very hard to wipe it off with the microfiber cloth but the 'markings' remains there.

Perhaps I should try also to 'polish' it with the toothpaste.

Yeah, the FFC definitely has the coating as well. My front facing one went a couple weeks before the back. For mine I could just scratch it off the front with my fingernail, so you could try that, or a credit card, then go for toothpaste if it doesn't work. Just make sure you don't go overboard and gunk up the speaker grille.

Toothpaste + Q tip ftw!

I tried it yesterday for all the FFC, BFC and Duo Cam.... and now my photo are crisp and sharp again! Awesomeee!

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Noticed some stratches on my lens a few days after I bought it, but it didn't start affecting pictures until the other day. Just cleaned my lens with some toothpaste and a qtip, and lightly rubbed a credit card just to be sure. Pictures are now clear as day.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I used alcohol and a small cloth that came with my screen protector. I just kept running in circular motion and wetting the cloth with alcohol and now it is as clear as new took a little work but that did it.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Recently AT&T replaced my M8 after giving me hard time and wanting me to do a insurance claim and paying 2 Bills deductible. The phone is onl 2 months old and I told them I am not going to do a insurance claim because its a manufacturer design flaw. I gave them an option either you replace my phone or I get a lawyer and file a class action lawsuit. Immediately they told me to go the nearest AT&T service center, and the guy there took a look at the camera, and said I am going to replace your phone.

So since this my second M8 and if the camera comes scratch again, I ask the guy what is next process with this issue, He told me to call customer service and demand to have the phone replace again or switch to different model phone. Once you say class action law suit the carrier will bent because its cheaper to replace a phone then get sued. If it happens again next phone will be LG G3.

Okay guys. Thank me later. Don't use toothpaste. Use a magic eraser sponge with a bit of water. Lens will be fixed in about one minute.
