HTC One (M8): Camera Lens Issue

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I really just wanted then to improve and develop ultra pixel...the concept was going in the right direction even if they had to go 6 ultra pixels, but now that they are coming with a 13, then why not a 16 or twenty or forty...the mega pixel race is just stupid, especially when you've got the iPhone camera at 8 MP nearly killing all the competition. Apple keeps building on good ideas and making them better and better. HTC did the right thing by bringing the same camera to the M8, but they need to keep tweaking and maybe reduce the UP size in order to add 2 extra UP...But the flip back to 13 makes it look like we got swindled with the whole UP experiment....which basically reduces the value and quality of this phone! I'm pissed!

My understanding is that this 13 MP phone will still be Ultra Pixel but have a curved lens...hense eye....I read an article about Sony developing this technology but it hasn't debuted in a phone yet. If that is what they are unwrapping on Oct. 8th I am all for it. They can't sit on their hands until next April and the HTC M9. They need something else this fall. Sony is in the same boat. Only Samsung and Apple are making any money in mobile right now. Other than the Chinese companies.

So, here we go again..if what you say is true, then it's just HTC introducing yet another completely new technology that we will have open arms for because we're so hungry for a good camera! I'm sorry, but I'm not ready to freely support HTC through another NEW Camera technology when Apple has proven that " know how" and diligence is what gets it right..not jumping on the next new camera technology band wagon!

please provide the site to this Sony article. I suppose we will all find out what the most Ritalin deficient phone maker has to say on October 8. I appreciate innovation, but I'm tired of gimmicks.

What I understood, is that they are going to keep the depth sensor, however they will not use UltraPixel, it will be a normal 13MP camera.

It's called innovation.. sometimes its hit and miss. Tried and true is what is making Apple fall behind.

I could care less about the depth sensor. I'd be pretty happy with a 8 UltraPixel camera.

A sensor for more UltraPixels will require more space, so getting rid of the Depth sensor can probably provide that space.

Now, while it is a good experience to use the Depth sensor when you first get the M8, you kinda forget all about it after a week or so, at least I did.

So I am with you on what you said, sadly, I don't think that HTC are going to be willing to get rid of the Depth sensor, at least not now.

Ok, so I just tried the Magic Eraser method. Only I used the generic Wal-Mart version of it. Wow was that easy. Just a little water in the eraser and squeeze out any excess, then less than 30 sec total in rubbing and good as new again. Took a couple extra scrubs to get some minor scratches that I missed on the initial attempt, but they all came off easily.

I've added before and after pics of the lens cover itself. I've also added before and after pics of using the camera since there was one or two posts mentioning the lack of comparable pics to show the improvement in picture quality. The pic of the wrecker was with the scratches and you can see how hazy it is (forgot to take a true "before" pic of the same subject/lighting). The jar pic was after cleaning and you can see everything is sharp and clear again.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Apple may be falling behind in some areas , but their iphone 6 cameras have no peers ..period dot com!!! And, their 5s camera stayed at the top of the hill despite it's 8 mp count. What you call innovation, i call Attention Deficit Disorder! Innovation means you create something that''s a game changer. Ultra pixel had the promise of being a game changer, but the ADD camera department at HTC decided to add a depth sensor rather than improve on the UP technology. They went in a totally different and gimmicky direction....That's not innovation! Hell, you can download the google camera and get damn near as good if not a better Bokeh effect than the HTC camera. I'm frustrated with HTC, especially when i see Apple killing everyone with the same old 8 mp camera that just can't be beat by any other cameras out there. Look for iphone 6 camera comparisons and you'll see for yourself just how crappy the HTC camera is in comparison to the newer phones. Even the Samsung held its own fairly well. I'd post the site if i had it, but i know you can google it. And, i don't want to hear that the newer phones have the latest technology advantage.... that's just crap now! The iphone 5s still beats out most phones and it's older than the m8. HTC was supposed to invest R&D into further development of UP and they failed. I'm not saying the camera is bad, but I'm frustrated because I'm one of those people that has had to send my phone back to HTC for several camera related issues over the span of the m7 and m8. And, now they're possibly going away from the UP technology altogether and onto something else! That's not innovation, that's some trial and error BS!
They need the same commitment and innovation in the camera department that they have employed in the sound and music department! They don't need to keep jumping ship. UP is the right direction, but build on it DAMNIT! Stop sidestepping! Do you remember the EVO 3d? HTC is just clueless when it comes to cameras and I really doubt that the m9 will be on par with the Iphone cameras, which sucks because i really like my m8 in every other area, but i must admit that i do not like the fact that i can never zoom in on a scene....never! You can't always get closer.... So, i guess i've told you " how i really feel!" LOL!

Dude chill, iPhones doesn't has the best camera, the best mobile cameras are in the Nokia Lumia series, followed by the Sony Z series, so the fact that you don't seem to know that makes arguing with you about mobile cameras a total waste of time.

The reviews I've seen on the iPhone 6 say the camera is average.

Can we all just agree that every flagship device can take excellent pictures (although they all have their own strengths and weaknesses) and keep discussion on the topic of the thread. There are other forums, and more importantly, other threads for arguing over what phone or camera is the best. This isn't the place for it.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

@ Deathhunter-m8......Either way, it's not HTC with the best camera. And, can you agree that some of what i said has some validity aside from the fact that we can both find reviews that will say that either of the aforementioned phones have the best cameras. The fact that The Iphones still take great pictures without being a phone that looks like a camera all while using 8mp technology is still quite impressive. I've seen some of the Iphone 6+ pics and they are not anywhere near average and they blow the m8 away. I'm not trying to make this a comparison between cameras because the m8 camera can't compare to the latest group of phones out there. and, i wonder aren't you just a little concerned? And, by and large, they don't need to be making phones that consumers have to return to the manufacturer for camera related stuff (purple tinting and lens coating failure). It just doesn't bode well. You're not going to stay afloat like that. I can tolerate those trip ups if they keep developing UP technology, but to drop it altogether is a waste. UP wasn't bad. It just needs a higher pixel count that is properly software optimized. 6 UP would have been the magic number.

I really don't understand all the fuss over the camera. After cleaning off the coating, I am able to get some amazing shots.

M8 takes great pictures. It sounds to me like you're wanting the features and performance of a $3000.00 SLDR camera in a $800.00 phone.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

ok, you didnt read a word i wrote... and that's fine, but anyone reading what i said would realize that i'm looking for anUP camera that's on par with the IP6, which is nowhere near a 3000.00 SLR. Why be so empty headed. You sound like an Isheep except you like Android. You can view my pedigree of comments and see that I'm an HTC supporter. And, because I am one to give new technology a chance... ever heard of Palm Pre? I think i reserve the right to criticize them for moving away from UP when they really haven't optimized it to the latest cell phone camera standards. They did nothing with the UP to dramatically improve its daylight performance and the comparisons between it and other flagship phones can be quite staggering. But, you are only reading what you want to read, so let's stop circling the drain with this dialogue and go on and pass through! I'm done.

Wish I hadn't read this topic now I have noticed small marks on the lense, hopefully I can forget I noticed and ignore the issue.
