HTC One (M8): Camera Lens Issue

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Hey guys I'm back, well I called HTC had some problems with customer service, eventually got them to waive the $19 shipping fee after speaking with a supervisor. This is the second time I'm sending the phone back in for a new one. Time to just wait for it to be replaced I guess. And also I have I'm going to have to use an iPhone 5s when I send the phone in so do you guys know if it's a simple process of transferring any photos and messages from the iPhone back to the new m8 when it comes in? I know HTC has it built into the phone but I haven't used it for iPhones so don't know how well it works. I received my label earlier today but, I have to ship it on Saturday. I'll probably copy everything on this phone to my computer and start using the iPhone tomorrow. Time for part 2 of this problem lol.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I had this same hazy camera lens cover issue which was making pics look hazy. Grabbed a bottle of Meguirs Clear Plastic Cleaner I had sitting around and a microfiber cloth and in two minutes all was good. Finished it up the Clear Plastic Polish and it looks like new.

I don't understand why you would ship it in a second time for this problem. Just clean the lens and be done with it.

I don't understand why the phone has this problem. I'll clean the lens if the next phone I get has the problem. What exactly can I use to clean it?

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I'm glad I found this, done the toothpaste and a little alcohol and my pics are clear again. I don't think this coating was meant to be there.

I agree wholeheartedly.. My new replacement camera lens just started doing the same thing all over again.. Obviously sending it in a 2nd time is not going to correct it. So.... 1 q-tip, a dab of Colgate toothpaste, about 3 minutes of rubbing a little hard in a circular motion, wiping it off with a slightly wet micro cloth and I am back to taking good pictures again.. I will get around to cleaning the rest of the lens for aesthetic purposes one day. :)

Results attached..

Okay that's good, I guess I'll do that if it happens with the new device I'm getting if it happens with that one, since I'm already sending it in. It seems easy though, so that's good.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Guys so I had the same minor little scratches on the main back camera, the top camera and the front camera.

I followed people and used the toothpaste method and It WORKS like a CHARM! brought the camera back to new!

You just have to use a qtip and buff it with the toothpaste for a few minutes in different directions. Then clean it off with rubbing alcohol and then buff it with a cloth. Used it on all 3 cameras and its wonderful!

No need to send it back to HTC.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

OK... So this is mainly to anyone on this thread, with this issue, in the UK...

Firstly, I am absolutely not using Brasso on my camera lens  The very thought of using metal cleaner scares the cr*p out of me...

I have just been on to HTC UK customer 'alleged' support... Basically, the guy said he had never heard of this issue and that I needed to send it in to them for 10 days to see if it was my fault or under Warranty... If it was under warranty then they would repair and send back for free.. if not then I would get quote and have to pay for it and its return...

I explained it was under 2 months old and the phone was not damaged in any way, just this issue that was all over the internet... He even refused to allow me to speak to his line manager as "he would tell me the same thing"...

They are obviously not allowed to think for themselves and have a script in front of them...!!!!!!

Has anyone in the UK had any joy??? I am going to try and call again on Monday, in hope of talking to someone different and more helpful...

I am loathed to do the DIY thing as I don't think I should have to, on what is almost a brand new 'expensive' phone...

I am not convinced that emailing the HTC owner dude, is going to help, being in the UK...!!!!!

Any advice welcome

Edited to say I have emailed Mr Mackenzie, in hope that he will respond to us UK folk in the same way he has to some on here...

Use the toothpaste method. It's five minutes of work. Sure, you shouldn't HAVE to do this, but why you wouldn't is beyond me.

It's do a simple, no risk DIY, or go through the arduous process of getting your phone replaced and then have it happen again with the new one in a few months. It's your choice, but exchanging it is a temporary fix that's harder to do and cleaning it is a permanent fix that's incredibly simple.

It got really bad and toothpaste wouldn't work. Called HTC today and they're shipping me a new one overnight.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I watched the haze slowly build up on my main lense and decided to take action today when a picture I took outside came out looking pretty rough. I used some Meguiars PlastX (plastic cleaner & polisher) that I had laying around. Tiny drop on a microfiber wipe and it came off in seconds. All good!

My Fix worked today and took less than 5 mins 100% guaranteed .

2 cotton buds, autoglym car polish, work in the polish to remove the very poor lens coating with a cotton bud, you will instantly see the improvement, clean with fresh bud to inspect and re apply as and when necessary.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Hi Guys
I have the same issue in just 2 months.
I have just spoken to HTC support and they said I should not believe whats written on the internet and its the first time they have heard of this problem!
:(

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Same problem with mine -- I've had it since launch day. Seemed to just come out of nowhere.

For the people that have wiped the coating off -- has there been any problems taking photos? Only concern is the UV coating was doing something to help reduce overexposure...

Haven't noticed any difference whatsoever. If anything it's slightly better. UV filters on digital cameras have traditionally been used as transparent lens caps rather than anything beneficial to the image. I can assure you that taking off the coating will do absolutely nothing negative.

Well I'll turn it around and say you generally shouldn't trust people on the phone who are essentially reading you a script. It's surprising that they haven't heard of this, but they really don't need to.

I can assure you that the cleaning methods work brilliantly with no adverse effects. I'll even upload a video showing the process to YouTube for you if you'd like. I have a bit more of the coating around the edges of the lens that aren't affecting anything but that I was planning on getting off for aesthetics. If you do the toothpaste method just make sure it's the plain white kind, none of those crystals or whitening strips. But yeah, it's not going to hurt your phone. If you exchange it for another it's just going to happen again to that one in a couple months.

Car polish works...? Is there something in particular that cleans it...? Would nail varnish remover work???
