HTC One (M8): Is there anything that this phone does better than the competition?

So big companies are taking advantage of their names by pricing their devices above YOUR desired price range, and you don't like them because of it? Lol, got it.

Every feature in the galaxy or note line are gimmicks, they are giving you 100$ worth of things that they don't even have to give you in the first place, but they suck for it. plastic sucks, apple sucks because they offer a different OS and use what you would describe as "premium materials", but are pricing their devices too high for your wallet. Etcetera

[text deleted by moderator]

They aren't pricing it above my desired price range, they are pricing it above the price range of other phones of equal caliber. It's like if the majority of phones cost $600, they would price it at $800 for no good reason. Your only defense to that is a bunch of free apps that are totally irrelevant after a year, but then what do you have to say about the S4 that was priced that way last year without the free junk?
I also never said every feature are gimmicks, just that a chunk of them are. Are you going to argue and say their features are all perfect and useful?
Apple sucks for their HUGE overpricing because of brand name. Their "different OS" is a joke, Unix-like OSes can't handle most programs that windows can, no games really come out on mac either, but somehow a bunch of [people] tend to buy their macbooks for $1000 more because of their name. You can just install the OS on a laptop that's 2-2.5x more powerful for the same price!

Yea, I've never seen anyone do this in real life, lol. The only device I've ever used without my headphones is my tablet, and that's once on a blue moon, lol

i listen to podcasts on my phone all the time with speakers. Unfortunate my s3 sucks and i really need an upgrade

Re: Is there anything that this phone does better than the competition?

Objectively, can you tell me why metal is better than plastic on a phone? Objectively.

There's a recent thread about that in which I gave specific examples. I'm going to respect the moderator's request and not drag this thread further off topic.

Thanks for being mindful of keeping the thread on-topic, but a discussion of the perceived benefits of the metal construction of the HTC One (M8) would be considered appropriate for this thread.

Re: Is there anything that this phone does better than the competition?

This media player's lyric sync (karaoke) feature is that new? Will it show lyrics of all songs on your phone? Me and my husband get a kick out of Sound Hound and how it shows you the lyrics and does it in real time as it finds the song the lyrics are in sync it's cool. I can't wait to get the M8 will have it next week. I love the boom speakers and when I work in this one back room by myself I play my music through the speakers all the time on my M7 now. I also have a bluetooth headset too. But watching a video or movie I use the speakers. I love Sense and have every HTC phone since the OG EVO.

Here is my list off the top of my head.. Some might be incorrect

Multimedia experience:
Zoe features (i.e., the always smile post capture feature)
Highlight reel features (and no, there isn't an implementation as robust and seamless)
Media player's lyric sync (karaoke) feature
Sense TV interface and features (real time TV broadcast updates)

Hardware features :
Wide-angle 5mp FF camera
BoomSound speakers (Sony Z2 is very close according to reviews)
Higher voltage amplifier for driving headphone output (this is for those who think BoomSound is useless because they use headphones)

Well, then.. :)

First, if we get into the objective reasons why using metal in a phone is better than plastic then we will find that they always trace back to the root; which is because the consumer prefers it (which in itself is not objective). So, it's a circular argument that's pointless to pursue. Consumer preference is valid enough on it's own, especially in that it dictate's the phone's existence.

If we escape semantics, most people prefer metal. That's enough right there. Why do they? Aesthetics; It's more pleasant to look at, hold, and taste (j/k). Perception; It's holds more monetary value and is used in more expensive products, while plastic is associated with cheapness. This creates the perception of a classier, more valuable look. Durability; while scratch-resistance is debatable, plastics don't age as well. Sometimes it matters within the lifetime of the phone, sometimes it doesn't but you won't see anodized aluminum yellowing or fading because of it's composition. All of these are generalizations but they relate to the consumer's preference. It's the same reason Sophia Vergara is beautiful. You can certainly argue that she isn't, but it's a lonely opinion to have.

So if people prefer metal, that means that the htc one would outsell the galaxy phones correct? After all what better way to vote than with what matters most $$$$$$

No. Purchases are dictated by many other factors than a case. The factual evidence is that the M7 was widely considered the best phone of 2013. Yet, it didn't sell.
There are MANY considerations to take account for. Advertising is a major one.

Widely considered by a mass of consumers or tech sites?

How are you arriving that people prefer metal then? A few tech sites and what? 500 people on an android forum?

I think people prefer what's trendy. Think about the segment of the population that referred to all android devices as droids. Galaxy devices are now the ambassadors of the android world. Samsungs marketing power is untouchable at this point.
But I do think it is safe to say that for whatever reason...most people prefer metal and perceive it as a better and more luxurious material. iphones have always been praised for their aluminum and glass construction. Same with HTC. They have won tons of awards and recognition. Why doesn't that translate to $$$$$? Who knows.

It's called; an understanding of modern culture (or; not living in a cave). You know people prefer aluminum just as well as I do. I also know that people think a Jaguar is a comfortable ride and NY strip makes a better steak than chuck. I'm not going to abandon common sense for the sake of this argument.

Ah the classic sales numbers fallacy. Based on your statement, the following conclusion can be made: If people prefer metal then the HTC One will be purchased by two or more consumers. If people don't prefer metal, then the HTC One would be purchased by at most one person. However, I'd like to address that fallacy regarding a phones build material and its number of sales transactions. The iPhone (I'm aware this isn't in the original discussion) sells more than any individual smartphone. It is made of metal, therefore more people prefer metal phones. What is ironic is that to save face, users of the sales numbers stats will try to save face and say things like "...oh..ummm that only applies to Android devices".

I first saw it with the M7. It will show the lyrics for all songs that it can find the info for. The lyric sync applies to all songs where the information is available. I've noticed that lyric sync works better with more common songs, whereas other songs will only have the lyrics displayed.

You are just making assumptions with nothing to back it up, you do realize that right?

If people prefer metal to plastic, and like Android, then why does a plastic phone lead the market while the metal phone sells a lot less?

Are you being serious here with this question? Who in their right mind would be delusional enough to think that an Android device's construction material has the highest influence for its sales vs its competitors? Even if they don't explicitly state such (build material has the highest influence), the fact that build material is the ONLY differentiating factor that they constantly mention when referring to the number of sales and Android device can generate, leads me to question their rational.

For example if two Android devices have equal specifications, sales price, and features, and the only difference between the two is the build materials, then forming a conclusion would be more simple since there are fewer differences.

This is not the case in the Android device market. So can I give a definite answer, not a chance. There's far too many variables to take into consideration, especially when speaking of sales, public perception, brand loyalty, consumer confidence, etc.

I was right about one thing. The sales numbers buffs have to draw the line at the Android market, else they risk having the iPhone render their fallacies utterly useless.

But I thought people preferred metal to plastic? So if build material, as you say, has the highest influence ,then why is there such a gap between the #1 and #2 in the android space?

And please don't tell me that advertising accounts for such a large gap.

It's either of two things, one people don't prefer metal to plastic, or most importantly and realistically an logically : on a large scale No One Cares what their phone is made of in the first place.

Re: Is there anything that this phone does better than the competition?

Advertising gave the S4 a 5 million gap between their phone and the htc one?

Sent from my Apple iPad Air using Tapatalk

Yes. Also advertising from the s to the s2 to the s3 and so on. Samsung is not the best. People are made to believe they are from advertising and the trickle down affect.
