HTC One (M8): SD card issues

Re: SD card issues

I haven't got a My files app on my phone that I can see.
The torrent client creates folders as far as I know although you can specify where they are.
If I try pointing it to the SD it comes back with an error.

Sorry... all I can say is that I don't have HTC, but Samsung. I assumed EVERYONE had a native file manager, but maybe I'm wrong and that's Samsung's rather than Google's. Someone more familiar with the hTC ecosystem will have to respond.

The M8 does not have a native file manager. Also "my files" is a Samsung app.

Re: SD card issues

Every device that gets Kit Kat will behave this way. There are no more workarounds being implemented by any manufacturers.

Why is it kitkat? I can move files anywhere I want to and from an SD card attached to the USB port on my M7

Were talking about the microsusb slot on the m8. I don't think USB otg is affected

Check out this article, it may help explain what's going on. KitKat and SD cards — what's fixed, what's broken and what's misunderstood | Android Central
If I understand correctly, moving/writing files to the sd card is limited to apps and the folders that they create on the sd card because of security protocols implemented in KitKat.

Bumping this to the newest post. This article explains it well.

I've moved tv shows from internal storage gallery to sd card (HTC m8) press and hold on video file within gallery - select move to - then up in the top right corner press the add new folder icon - then you can add the name of the folder and below there's a option to make the new folder on the sd card . I guess this will work for any file within the gallery

I'm able to play the files from within the gallery

This truly sucks. If we wanted to be stupid sheep that don't understand anything technical and just want to be "protected " we'd be on the Apple Pharm.

And there's NO FILE MANAGER ON THE M8????? WTF?

Aftermarket file managers don't have full read/write permissions on the SD card with KK.

Meaning, you can't use an aftermarket file manager to move files from your internal memory to SD card.

OEM built-in file managers (like the Samsung 'my files' manager) can workaround the KK issue.

You can actually move apps, that support it, in the settings menu. Go into apps and swipe right, to the middle tab labeled 'on sd card'. You can then move all the apps in there to the sd card. I actually have a bunch of apps that can be moved

Moving apps to the SD card is not the issue.

The issue is using any file explorer app to copy files from internal memory to the SD card.
Or even using the file explorer to delete off the SD card.

Mine automatically moves apps that are bigger than 45mb to the SD card. I don't think it's a software issue. Could it possibly be your card? It also gave me an option to save pics to my SD card when I first started up the camera.

Also, the phone has 32GB of internal on it, so it's not that huge of a deal?

For one thing, the 32GB isn't available in every country.
But the other problem I found was I fitted the card a few days after I got the phone so I changed the camera to save to SD but then ran into problems when I wanted to move all the existing pics to the SD.
I had to copy them onto my PC then back to the SD card.
I also had to manually move the apps to SD from the apps menu.
Wonder if that's region specific, 32Gb specific or setting the phone up with the SD card already in place during setup.

I've already said how to move media files, pictures/tv/movies from within the gallery app.

"just because your stupid doesnt mean im lying"

So, we're certain there is no stock file explorer on the M8, correct?
And any third-party like ES Explorer (which I use now and is great) is not going to be allowed to add or delete files to/from the microSD...
And if I root, I void my one-year warranty.
This is a true conundrum. I do a lot of moving files around and I pretty much refuse to have to work from a PC when the whole tech world is eveloving away from PC and more and more to 100% mobile.

Although I think this is baloney from Google, who has ulterior motives, what about apps using folders on the internal memory? You can do anything you want there? You can make or delete folders and apps can do that too???

It all feels like the big G is trying to force us to the cloud.
