HTC One = Total Fail?

Here is testing on the S4's battery life, which apparently is game changing:

Samsung Galaxy S4 extensive battery tests are out: average users could use it for three days without charging

Here is the One's camera struggling to compete with year old phones, let alone the S4 or next iPhone:

Camera comparison: HTC One vs Nokia Lumia 920 vs Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Sony Xperia Z vs Google Nexus 4

HTC needed a game changer to stop its downward spiral and it's really hard to see how the One will accomplish that when it fails to stand out at anything except a nice aluminium frame. I think HTC missed the mark by emphasizing the outer shell instead of the performance (camera, battery) and software. People don't buy iPhones because they look and feel nice. They buy them because they work quickly, smoothly, has a huge ecosystem and because the camera is good enough that most people leave their cameras home for most occasions. Sammy appears to have learned this lesson and is thriving.

The more I read this thread, the more I think it should be re-titled "HTC One = Total Fail For Me"

You are clearly favoring the S4 which is fine of course, it is your opinion and choice. However, I don't understand how you think they "missed the mark" with performance and software. From what I can see the software is much improved over the current version of sense. The battery by most reports is pretty good. The users on here from the UK seem to rave about the battery life they get. I would assume it would be good given my battery in my DNA is fantastic and the One has a smaller screen, newer internals, and bigger battery. It may not be as good as the S4 but that doesn't mean its bad. As for the camera, it does seem like a miss from a lot of the sample shots I see that aren't low light. I still wouldn't call them terrible by any stretch, and definitely good enough for my uses as they only stay on my phone (I don't print them out or anything). Also, the One looks like it does "work quickly, smoothly" and it does have a "huge ecosystem", just like the Xperia Z, Note 2, S4, DNA, and any other top tier phone.

Hold on. Hold on. Wait!

This link says the HTC One has a 4mp camera. Is that correct?

Way to go HTC! Rockin it like it's 2011.

Forget the battery. This phone can't even get out of the gate.

4mp! I swear I thought that had to be a misprint.

Lololol!

That was intentional. Megapixels aren't everything, they made the actually tech behind the camera itself better and had to sacrifice MP's to make it work or something like that. Considering it works pretty well, there's nothing for you to poke fun of. ;P

Well that's all well and good, and I'm sure HTC has its explanations as it flails about in damage control mode, but a 4mp isn't going to shoot the same resolution as 13mp. HTC is in BlackBerry Curve territory.

HTC says it helps with low light shots. My Note 2 has a low light setting that works extremely well. I've got to believe that the SIV will have the same technology with its utterly badass 13mp camera.

4mp. Sorry guys, but that indeed is an Epic Fail. No excuse for that in 2013. That's right up there with the Note 10.1's 149 ppi resolution. You just can't believe it went to market like that.

Maybe you didnt read what I wrote. HTC is a failing, flailing company. In order to reverse their fortunes they needed to change the landscape and give the mass buying public an alternative to Samsung and Apple. By releasing a nicely built phone that fails to excel or exceed any of its rivals, I believe it's a total fail. It's like hitting a single when you need a home run to tie the game.

The pictures look fine to me, not the best but they're not bad either. Honestly everyone acts like each new phone should have the best camera ever made. At least HTC tried something new with their camera and it succeeds with low-light shots which are an issue with mobile phone cameras and the regular shots seem good, they're definitely a step-up from the iPhone 5, S3, and previous HTC phones at least.

But again, I guess it's just something for the haters to complain about even when they see how it works.

You may want to read the comparison of cameras posted above. The One's camera cant even keep up with LAST YEAR's flagships let alone the S4 and 5s

Well, that's some endorsement. I guess the companies have different philosophies as to what a flagship phone should be. Clearly, Samsung wants to be the best, and HTC just sort of shrugs its shoulders as it sits on the bench looking confused.

There are some execs in South Korea laughing out loud right now.

It's funny of all the reviews I've seen only a few have really knocked the camera with most saying it gives up sharpness for great low light performance and a smaller file size. And I'm cool with that if you don't like the phone cool it's up to you but I will compromise on battery size and software features of a more premium build and to get away from an amoled screen. I also don't believe HTC needs a home run I believe they needed a good base hit to differentiate themselves and build their user base back up. After all things said and done I think they have done that. Every phone comes with an inherent compromise do you want great build quality and premium feel, or do you want plastic thin and light, can you put up with the two button setup or will a physical home button suite you better. Look at what you like make up your mind but don't bash another phone because it doesn't suite your needs.

No one is bashing the phone per se, just HTC's attempt at a comeback to prominence with a phone that most likely will get buried by the S4 and 5s.

As far as so called build quality, the market has spoken and the majority could care less. Just because the Sammy is plastic doesn't mean it isnt built well. In fact, there are many reports about how easy the aluminum scratches and scuffs on the One.

I think there are a few Samsung fan-boys here talking trash about HTC One because they are so afraid that HTC One might have more success than GS4 or Note 2.

Yeah man, guilty as charged, shaking in my sd cards over here. ;)

Please don't comment about a subject you have no apparent knowledge about. Ask any camera expert and they'll say that the number of megapixels on a camera has little effect on the picture quality. That's like saying the octo-core Exynos 5 Octa is more powerful than the quad-core Core i7. I hate to say it, but Samsung fanboys are starting to act like Apple fanboys.

I'm with Samsung because they currently make the best smart phones on the market. As soon as somebody else does, I'll jump ship. But the HTC One isn't it.

That's why i pointed it out. I have a DSLR that has .1 (that's right not 1 whole MP more just .1) more megapixels than my point and shoot did, one of them takes pictures that look 10x better. Guess which one that is.

Just as their were reports about how fragile the s3 is if dropped. So realistically it doesn't matter as I said some may prefer the cold feel of aluminum were as others are content with plastic.
And don't think I'm biased against samsung I've had the s1 through s3 including the gnex. And at this point I'm leaning towards the one but may change my mind depending on how comfortable I am with the button setup.

Actually this is incorrect. The low 4mp is fine for viewing on the phone itself but when it's blown up to a full PC screen or TV the One's pics simply cannot compete with the higher MP cameras. Almost every single review points this out.

The question isn't whether the HTC One will outsell the S4. We all know it won't.

The question is: will it outsell the BlackBerry Z10? The BlackBerry has an 8mp camera, expandable storage, and a removable battery.

Doesn't take a camera expert to know when a picture looks like crap.
