This is very creative nonsense. I give you credit for coming up with a pretty interesting analogy, even though it is completely ridiculous. Samsung taking steps to attempt new, and innovative features can hardly be compared to ghetto welding a broken toaster to your car (a sentence I never thought i'd have to type). If you ask me, the true joke of the two phones we're comparing is that HTC knows that people are so STUPID that they will buy an aluminum piece of dog crap because they think it's automatically better. This is coming from someone who would buy the HTC One over the S4 if I had them both in front of me right now. But i'm not going to fall for the nonsense that Aluminum is more durable than plastic.
I want the HTC One because I want to test the low light capability of the ultrapixels. I want to play around with Sense 5 because i've experienced Blur and TW. I want the front facing speakers and BoomSound is a cool concept. But to cripple your production just to be able to say the case is one piece of aluminum is a complete travesty. HTC does not have the financial luxury right now to take such risks. They should be concerned with getting their device in as many hands as possible. I give them a tiny bit of credit for trying to make a device that appears higher quality, but at the same time I see them looking beyond the mark yet again. I would imagine the majority of people on here worshipping aluminim will have a plastic case over their HTC One within the first few weeks of owning it.
I think the most innovative feature of any device is that front facing speaker idea. The second would be the software changes Samsung made. All of that however, could completely change once I actually get the finished product in hand. I only wish I had already spent weeks with each device like some of you act like you have. That way i'd already be able to brush aside the "gimmicks" and determine which was a failure and which was a success. We're lucky that JHBThree and CrackberryTraitor have already spent extensive time with the S4 so they know all there is to know.
Haven't handled the S4 yet but have spent the last year with an S3 and do not expect the build of the new phone to be any different, I have also spent the last two and a bit weeks with the One almost permanently in my hands as well as a good few weeks of research before that. So firstly you need to know that the delays were (and still are ) down to manufacture of the camera units by a third party supplier and not down to the length of time it takes to make the aluminium case. During the pre-launch promo hype HTC tweeted a link to a description of the manufacturing proccess in which they said it takes something like 200 minutes to make the case, the intention was to give an Apple like impression of quality but when the phone was delayed, people jumped to conclusions. The company making the camera units fell well short of their production targets, the reasons for which are still up for debate, some say it was down to the new design while the more conspiracy theory orientated blame competitors for applying pressure in an attempt to sabotage production.
It is highly unlikely they chose to use aluminium for durability over plastics, or that they meant anyone to assume that, but their goal with the One was definitely to produce a 'premium' feeling to the phone and the aluminium certainly achieves that. There is another manufacturer who likes to use similar materials for similar reasons and they have been quite successful with it, you may have heard of them?
Meanwhile, back in the real world, if you drop an S3 from waist height you are in trouble, drop an iPhone from waist height and you are still in trouble but more likely to cry about it. Drop the HTC One from waist height then I am guessing you will still be in exactly the same trouble but I have no intention of putting the theory to the test. My point is that the materials used are chosen first and foremost on their aesthetic qualities rather than on their long term durability, they are not designed to last for 25 years after all. My One does not have a plastic case over it, it lives in a leather pouch when its in my pocket but when it is in my hand it is totally naked in all its aluminiumy glory.
HTC have taken some risks with the One, the camera is a new concept and Blinkfeed is a love it or hate it app, so there are bound to be criticisms, but it is all subjective and down to personal preference. Personally I would rather have features that I will use on a daily basis like the excellent forward facing speakers (that make every other manufacturer face palm with a resounding D'uh!) or the surprisingly effective tv remote.
How about the major features of the S4? An unproven 8 core cpu that won't even make it into 70% of production units? Erm, fail! Eye tracking technology that is on a par with the first attempts at voice recognition? Erm, fail! Not even going to mention TouchWiz.................
