HTC One = Total Fail?

In the same way that having a broken old toaster welded to your dashboard provides more functionality to your car. It drains the battery, clutters the car and burns the toast. Not to mention that the vast majority of folks don't want to make toast while driving in the first place and if they did, they could get a nice new toaster that works properly and plug it in or remove it at their leisure.

This is very creative nonsense. I give you credit for coming up with a pretty interesting analogy, even though it is completely ridiculous. Samsung taking steps to attempt new, and innovative features can hardly be compared to ghetto welding a broken toaster to your car (a sentence I never thought i'd have to type). If you ask me, the true joke of the two phones we're comparing is that HTC knows that people are so STUPID that they will buy an aluminum piece of dog crap because they think it's automatically better. This is coming from someone who would buy the HTC One over the S4 if I had them both in front of me right now. But i'm not going to fall for the nonsense that Aluminum is more durable than plastic.

I want the HTC One because I want to test the low light capability of the ultrapixels. I want to play around with Sense 5 because i've experienced Blur and TW. I want the front facing speakers and BoomSound is a cool concept. But to cripple your production just to be able to say the case is one piece of aluminum is a complete travesty. HTC does not have the financial luxury right now to take such risks. They should be concerned with getting their device in as many hands as possible. I give them a tiny bit of credit for trying to make a device that appears higher quality, but at the same time I see them looking beyond the mark yet again. I would imagine the majority of people on here worshipping aluminim will have a plastic case over their HTC One within the first few weeks of owning it.

I think the most innovative feature of any device is that front facing speaker idea. The second would be the software changes Samsung made. All of that however, could completely change once I actually get the finished product in hand. I only wish I had already spent weeks with each device like some of you act like you have. That way i'd already be able to brush aside the "gimmicks" and determine which was a failure and which was a success. We're lucky that JHBThree and CrackberryTraitor have already spent extensive time with the S4 so they know all there is to know.

My analogy was only referring to Touchwiz vs AOSP. I think it applies just fine and will continue to do so until Samsung comes up with features that actually work right or have even a pretense of being useful. Maybe the S4 will provide some.

I don't really have an opinion as to Plastic vs Aluminum and all that Jazz and I'll most certainly be buying both devices.

It's really kind of funny, this is probably the first time JBH and I have even remotely agreed about anything whatsoever.

[ removed by moderator ] welding a broken toaster... Made me laugh.

This argument is so subjective and isn't getting anywhere. I could tell you that smart stay and smart rotation are the best features ever and revolutionized my life and it wouldn't change your OPINION on the subject and you could tell me they're garbage and it wouldn't change my experience (btw I'm talking hypothetical and those features are not the best but just an example)

And not to mention this is pointless because your arguing why people should run custom roms on s3's in an htc one thread.

True, but thanks to you I have ripped out my passenger side seat and installed a 12 volt coffee maker, toaster and griddle. Mmmmmm bacon.

I don't care what kind of phone you have, that's not how I judge someone's worth or intelligence.

I like this. Don't think it holds true for the population as a whole hear though.

Maybe my analogy was bad, because that actually sounds awesome.

Yes it does hold true for most of the population. Once you're past high school almost nobody gives a crap what kind of phone any one else has, as long as they answer it when you call.

The key part of that was "on here" and yeah I realize I had a typo om that. I agree with you as people as a whole. But on here that's not true. Just tell people you prefer iPhone and see how well it goes over, or go to any active htc thread and talk about Touchwiz. It's not everyone but certainly many

Haven't handled the S4 yet but have spent the last year with an S3 and do not expect the build of the new phone to be any different, I have also spent the last two and a bit weeks with the One almost permanently in my hands as well as a good few weeks of research before that. So firstly you need to know that the delays were (and still are ) down to manufacture of the camera units by a third party supplier and not down to the length of time it takes to make the aluminium case. During the pre-launch promo hype HTC tweeted a link to a description of the manufacturing proccess in which they said it takes something like 200 minutes to make the case, the intention was to give an Apple like impression of quality but when the phone was delayed, people jumped to conclusions. The company making the camera units fell well short of their production targets, the reasons for which are still up for debate, some say it was down to the new design while the more conspiracy theory orientated blame competitors for applying pressure in an attempt to sabotage production.

It is highly unlikely they chose to use aluminium for durability over plastics, or that they meant anyone to assume that, but their goal with the One was definitely to produce a 'premium' feeling to the phone and the aluminium certainly achieves that. There is another manufacturer who likes to use similar materials for similar reasons and they have been quite successful with it, you may have heard of them?

Meanwhile, back in the real world, if you drop an S3 from waist height you are in trouble, drop an iPhone from waist height and you are still in trouble but more likely to cry about it. Drop the HTC One from waist height then I am guessing you will still be in exactly the same trouble but I have no intention of putting the theory to the test. My point is that the materials used are chosen first and foremost on their aesthetic qualities rather than on their long term durability, they are not designed to last for 25 years after all. My One does not have a plastic case over it, it lives in a leather pouch when its in my pocket but when it is in my hand it is totally naked in all its aluminiumy glory.

HTC have taken some risks with the One, the camera is a new concept and Blinkfeed is a love it or hate it app, so there are bound to be criticisms, but it is all subjective and down to personal preference. Personally I would rather have features that I will use on a daily basis like the excellent forward facing speakers (that make every other manufacturer face palm with a resounding D'uh!) or the surprisingly effective tv remote.

How about the major features of the S4? An unproven 8 core cpu that won't even make it into 70% of production units? Erm, fail! Eye tracking technology that is on a par with the first attempts at voice recognition? Erm, fail! Not even going to mention TouchWiz.................

Really? You use front facing speakers every day on a cell phone? Exactly which phones have you been using them on all these years before the One was released?

Not sure who you are speaking to with this post, but if it is mcprice, he said he is going to use the dual front facing speakers every day because he has the HTC One already, not that he always has used dual front facing speakers.

I'm willing to bet most phones of the future will begin putting dual front facing in.

I wouldn't bet on it. I would guess more phones look like the s4 where the front of the phone is nearly all display. We also see this with every mock up and render of rumored phones as well. I'm not ragging on the one by any means but I could see where I get tired of seeing large speaker grills taking up realistate on the front of my phone and making my phone longer. I love the fact that speaker quality is improving and I hope htc keeps pushing that but I don't see similar front facing speakers as the wave of the future. Just my two cents

I would venture to say that front facing speakers are worthless to most people who listen to music thru headphones mostly. I cannot think of a single time that I said to myself, "Dang, I wish I had some awesome front facing speakers on my cell phone".

This post is very interesting in that almost the exact post was put on other sites regarding the S4. Even the =total fail. As well as saying I really like this phone BUT. This is either a planted post by an iphone fanboy or someone just trying to start arguments. It should be closed.

The Note was ridiculed when it first came out. Predicting trends is difficult.

the only two fails for the htc one in my mind is it ships with 4.1.2 and has a smaller non removable battery.
