I don't understand how [deleted] ass Apple allowed it to get to this point, where shipments are made and everything. If Apple had gone to HTC and threatened before manufacturing and HTC ignored them, then it's HTC's fault. This is ridiculous. Is Samsung gonna get everyone's business now?
Easy. Because Apple wants the competition to lose lots of moolah. Apple decided to be a huge PITA and they made sure they will and are the biggest PITA to ever cross the face of the earth... For everyone.
Totally HTC's Fault. Their law department failed big time on this one.
Go educate yourself before pointing fingers. It's not the code; it's the general action. Which is dumb because patenting an action and not the code itself is comparative to Shakespeare patenting a love story between star-crossed lovers ending up in tragedy and then Shakespeare holding off stocks of Tristan and Isolde or Braveheart because they patented the "general action/plot".
!@$% this patent system. It should be burned down.
I don't blame Sprint or HTC. Blaming them for a customs delay is dumb. This is on Apple. All this doom and gloom people that has been posted is not warranted. Mikey47- Fraud? Really. I am sure everyone at sprint reasonably expected to deliver the phone on Fri. So how can you say fraud was committed? The phone will be out, and some will proly get it on Friday. Chill.
No one can blame Sprint or HTC and whoever does has barely a neuron left in their brains. Literally. Why would a company not choose to make profits out of selling products in high demand? No. This is all on Apple and their "friends" in the government.
I'm not as angry at Apple for filing as many ridiculous patents as they can, than I am at the patent system for blindly allowing those things to be patented. The patent system is essentially saying "Who cares who invented it, who cares if it's a distinct and unique technology rather than an extremely general idea, you can have whatever patents you want!"
That is true. It has been said before and it has to be said again. The patent system is bullcrap and needs to be fixed to patent trolls like Apple cannot use it as a tool to abuse rival companies. Let's face it. Apple is a monopoly monster. They want their monopoly or they will burn everything down for it.
Another reason why I will NEVER own an Apple product ever. I thought they were a good company just trying to compete well against other people, being innovate and all that but as I read more and more news and got to know them more because of their actions, it's clear that Apple doesn't care for anything BUT money and monopoly.
I would understand customs searching for "security" purposes, but seriously, copyright infringements are for courts, not to hold up our tax dollars and get all "army" on that azz. Lame!
I don't understand why customs is involved in a supposed patent infringement thing as well. It's stupid. I'm glad I don't live in the US now but Apple can still affect countless of users worldwide because of their patent-bullying.
It used to be that when someone texts me a phone number, my phone (Desire HD) would identify it as so and tapping on the link would allow me the option of saving that number as a new contacts, sending a message, or calling. Now because Apple got into their bullying and an idiotic judge ruled in favor of them, when I tap a number link on a text message it goes to the dialer and I have to press call and end immediately so I have the option to save or send a text to that number.
I am mad and frustrated. So mad in fact that I will never allow an Apple software or device inside this house. This is unfair and the patent system sucks for allowing it. Why should Apple be allowed to impede progress and evolution? It's IDIOTIC.
And it's why I hate Apple. It's not the device per se but the personality and motives of the company.
Checking software dockside is just plain stupid. There is more to this rumor than we know.
Of course there is.
Its very simple, if HTC were in violation of the order, wouldn't the violation have been caught on the One X? Not to mention Sprint has been giving out EVO LTE's for review for the past month. I am sure somewhere an Apple engineer had their hands all over an EVO LTE by now. I believe this is much to do about nothing.
Of course. But Apple has "friends" in court and in the government. So they just want to manipulate things in their favor.
"HTC One X is the perfect device huh??? Well, let's see when I use this patent and remove those convenient functions! Bwahahahahahahah!"
Apple has the belief that no one should be allowed to even so much as make smartphones except them.
Blatant assholes.
Did you not read my comment, do you comprehend what I said? Speaking of patents. The patent in question is something Apple acquired after the fact, other words, HTC was using the patent before Apple owned it. The compliance order and subsequent inspection is to make sure HTC removed the patent, not that HTC has been caught using it.
And they expect HTC to follow now AFTER THE FACT. I know it's stupid, but the courts are allowing Apple to do it. So never mind of users are inconvenienced. They either buy an iPhone or their phones will be highly inconvenient. No one cares for us--- the consumers. They just care about their money. And Apple hates HTC for trying to make better more lovable devices that are better than those measly iPhones.
The fact the patent office even excepted Apples application for that patent, shows they are morons. That is a basic feature that is in many devices not Apple related.
HIGHLY AGREE.
This is going to get tricky, but the main patent claim in question is as follows:
1. A computer-based system for detecting structures in data and performing actions on detected structures, comprising:
an input device for receiving data;
an output device for presenting the data;
a memory storing information including program routines including
an analyzer server for detecting structures in the data, and for linking actions to the detected structures;
a user interface enabling the selection of a detected structure and a linked action; and
an action processor for performing the selected action linked to the selected structure; and
a processing unit coupled to the input device, the output device, and the memory for controlling the execution of the program routines.
The patent was filed in 1996, which may have been before this feature ("data tapping") became so common. The key here is in the line "a user interface enabling the selection of a detected structure and a linked action". Although urls were commonly interpreted as data structures that should cause a new page to open after being selected, I'm not so sure that it was common that a user interface popped up asking the user to select which action they wanted to have be performed.
If anyone can find some evidence of this action being performed prior to 1996, HTC would be eternally grateful, and we might get our phones faster.
Perhaps.
So are you telling me the HTC EVO 4G LTE isn't going to have that feature of touching a phone number and it automatically adding it to my phone app, ready to dial?
Also, is Samsung limited by this too or is it only HTC?
I sure hope not but I think that was HTC's way around that stupid infringement thing with the link thing in a text before also being dogged by Apple down everyone's throats but Apple wants to strip down that functionality non-existent. Never mind that all phones have it. Some idiot gave them the patent towars the actions so no one has the right to make functional phones except them.
The patent system is totally screwed up.
There is no way you should be able to patent an action. I see the code yes, but not an action. Or a menu.
That is true, but the government/the courts are useless idiots who have no plans to change such a thing. They make loads of money out of it. Why should they? They don't care about public welfare. They care about their own pockets.
Actually, you are completely wrong. You need to educate yourself on the situation before spouting off about how Apple invented data-tapping. What they patented - and what HTC is no longer allowed to use - is the contextual UI menu that pops up when a user taps a piece of data that has been identified.
To get around this, HTC has removed the menu containing options for what application to send the data to and there is simply a default application associated with each of the different data types (dialer, maps, email, etc). You can change the default application for opening each data type in the system settings, but there can only be one destination application for any data type at any given time.
Try reading something before declaring what Apple has and has not patented:

I'm also pretty sure this is a ridiculous patent for an "action":

What he said. Well done.
