HTC Rezound: No FM Radio App .... :)

Re: No FM Radio App .... :)

This is noteworthy - and we're moving in the right direction. :D So then if someone were running Sense 3.5 on their Thunderbolts, would this be a source for a possibly useful .apk file? Is there a way this can be accessed from the 3.5 build?

It will be if it's running the same radio or they linked a common source like /dev/radio or something easy. Also this is only going to be anywhere near useful after we get full permanent root.

Re: No FM Radio App .... :)

There are user:group for radio with a bunch of things in /dev owned by same, but I concur that without root there's not much else to be done.

Still, I finally got around to responding to htc. Hopefully this will produce a better answer than their previous non-answer.
-----
Thank you for the response. I'm not sure if I didn't word my original question correctly, if you misunderstood me, intentionally answered ambiguously or some combination of the above.

Let me try to rephrase.

The Rezound was originally specified to have an FM Radio tuner with RDS, however there is no included application which allows access to listening to FM radio broadcasts. I, and others, have attempted to use .apk packages from other htc model phones with no success.

I believe that the Rezound also uses the Broadcom 4430 chip which,in addition to the Bluetooth, WiFi and mobile network connections you mention, is spec'ed to provide FM Radio tuner with RDS.

So, my question is why is there no included fm radio tuner app and when will one become available? Or is this an intentional omission and crippling of the device's capability?

Regards

Re: No FM Radio App .... :)

That was quick.
I'm still not sure if it's a satisfactory answer. Like, is it just missing software which may or may not become available in the future.... Or is there no hardware capability.
--------
Currently the Rezound does not include radio tuning capability. At this time I have no information regarding any update to enable this feature.

Re: No FM Radio App .... :)

I've continued to badger them and now have been passed on to another department.
I finally put it to them as is it software that htc hasn't provided and if they never do 3rd party developers could make something? Or is it hardware, in which case there is no hope?

Re: No FM Radio App .... :)

So their final response was not to comment on features not within the phone's specification.
Of course we have all seen the specs listed on unofficial websites which state that there is fm radio with RSS. But it is absent from the htc website.
According to the broadcom specs for the chip, it should be possible. I am beginning to suspect some sort of (for lack of a better term) conspiracy to exclude it.

Anyways, now that we have root (which I haven't don't yet, BTW) would it be reasonable to pursue this again?

If so, would someone who has already rooted try installing the two different fm radio packages?
One is HTC fm radio, and the other is fm radio tuner. I think they are both linked up earlier on this thread (i'll go back through and find them after this post).

Hi there,

I did a quick scan of this thread and did not see actual links to the fm radio .apk files. I saw links to different sites that also were talking about the rezound not having a FM radio tuner on board. So I have a couple of questions for those in the know.

Would a build Sense 3.5 version from a rooted Thunderbolt work as a FM radio tuner? I am guessing - maybe? Could someone with links to the radio apps Surfing Jerry mentions above be able to post the links to these possible FM tuners again since I couldn't find them?

Just a couple of thoughts...:)

Re: No FM Radio App .... :)

Ok, I did find this - please let me know if this works for you...:) It's the FMRadio.apk

http://lts.cr/wBT

It is not a new link, it may or may not work, I just found it as I googled around. Also if anyone has the FMRadio from the HTC Rhyme, that should be a strong possibility.

I don't have a Rezound yet, I am eligible to upgrade this spring. I have a thunderbolt that has some issues, but still works for now. I really have wanted to upgrade to the Rezound, but I use FM radio all of the time, and I hesitate to give it up. I know that may sound dumb because some folks don't even know that the FM radios exist on some phones. I like being able to listen to the radio at work without getting pinged for taking up bandwidth as internet radio is frowned upon here, we have limited bandwidth. I can listen and not miss a call. To me, it's a very nice set up.

One other thing - I have also read that the FM tuner is for European or Asian radio stations, and I don't buy that at all. IF there is an FM chip on the Rezound, and it is wired up properly (I have read that some phones don't solder the connection) then we should be able to use it. If someone with a rooted Rezound wants to chime in here with their thoughts, that would be really helpful.:D

Link downloads and installs OK (un-rooted Rezound). When you try to open it says to plug in headphones to open. With headphones, app opens and tries to find a station...

Message with "FM Radio is being launched, please wait..." with the spinning circle indicating it is thinking. Still thinking after 15 minutes... I don't think it can find a station, so radio may not be hooked up (accesible) - if indeed it is included. Sigh. :(

Hey, thanks for trying! Don't give up yet! I don't think that is the end-all-be-all link. I believe that the radio app from a HTC Rhyme or a rooted Thunderbolt running sense 3.5 should be the most compatible radio. I do not believe that all radio apps are created equal and that probably the best option would be the one made by HTC. I will continue to look around so see if there can be a definitive answer. I was just trying to supply the link that was talked about earlier in the post, but may not be the best option, and now we know.

Thanks again for giving it a go!! :)

Re: No FM Radio App .... :)

Thanks. Sorry, I got distracted but will find the HTC radio apk or post it myself somewhere. Only I'm not sure which version of sense it is from.
I've also tried both with no success on an uprooted rebound. Need some brave soul to try on one that is rooted.

Re: No FM Radio App .... :)

Oh, by the way... Forgot to mention I also tried Spirit Radio app from Market. NFG - same as the FMRadio app - radio couldn't find a station (the website says the Rezound has issues, but doesn't seem to to completely preclude getting the FM radio working...) :p

FM Radio 1.6 from the Incredible doesn't work. It force closes every time I try to run it. I found it in my Titanium Backup files from my Incredible, just like the Flashlight. Flashlight runs correctly though.

I think what is not "hooked up" is the physical circuit board path from the radio to the physical antenna (headsets).

Re: No FM Radio App .... :)

The previous location where I got the htcfmradio.apk no longer has it, but a simple Google search gave this
Htcfmradio Apk - Download

I don't know what version it is.

I really think this needs to be tried on a rooted device. Try if you like on an unrooted, but don't expect much.

If the physical hookupisn't there, why does it tell you to user headphones when they're not plugged in? (i suppose it could just be a simple headphones detect, with nothing to do with the antennae)

This HTCfmRadio apk won't install on an unrooted Rezound. It sounds like the radio might be able to work. See: [APP] Spirit FM Radio: Broadcom,Texas Instruments,Silicon Labs, V4L/Qualcomm Tavarua - xda-developers Post #2 under chips and phones that work with Spirit FM Radio app. It says:

"These devices do not seem to function well for unknown reasons. Hopefully they will be enabled in future:

- HTC Desire CDMA / BravoC
- HTC Rezound
- Motorola Droid X (Some seem to have tuner problems (low signal strength) but some work OK. CM7 or Stock ROM rooted. Droid 2, 3 and X2 may also work. Use Motorola Audio Method on Stock or Stock derived ROMs. Option Volume Scale should be used about 75.)
- Sony Ericsson x10 mini pro"

Note the Rezound is NOT listed under "These devices will likely never be able to support FM:" or "devices [that] contain Broadcom chips, but appear to be unable to receive FM"

Re: No FM Radio App .... :)

I never had a phone with a *working* FM radio lol

My old DX just did not get FM signal at all.

Re: No FM Radio App .... :)

Don't want to be pessimistic, but those just look like run of the mill specs that HTC claims are wrong (i.e. there is no fm radio support). But I will hold out hope with you.

Yeah didn't the original spec sheet for the Rezound say the same thing and then the phone comes out and not there. Hardware is probably disabled. I wouldn't hold my breath.

I really wish there was some headway here. The SpiritFM dev dropped support for even trying to get this phone working.
