Android Central Question

Hi, I've just purchased a Huawei P20 Pro dual sim. I am using only one sim card and already have a phone for 4 days.

Guys, I've just wanted to ask you what to expect from the battery? I am using phone moderately - some Google Chrome, some Facebook, also a bit of messages and calls. Taking some photos. No video watching or music listening.

What I've encountered is that my battery usually lasts only ~24-26hr with charge dropping from 95% to 18-20%. Overnight it is from 3% to 7% drop, and when not using it, it doesn't seem to drain rapidly, but whenever I use the phone I can even see percents dropping in several minutes. Like if I use it for 5 minutes, it would be 1%.

Today in the morning while I was on my way to work, it dropped from 88% to 79% after some usage and reading articles in Chrome, then putting it down and reading again during ~40 minutes.

I've seen some reviews about 2 full days for this model, but for me it doesn't seem to be a case. Huawei's HiCare doesn't seem to find any problem with my battery, also, I did a cache partition wipe and factory reset.

So, my question would be is it ok with my expectations too high or should I visit a service centre?

Welcome to Android Central! What's your cell signal strength like? Poor signal is a common cause of battery drain.

Agreed. You can always test it by turning off cellular and monitoring the battery level.

Current signal is -97 dBm 42 asu network is 4G+. This is at home it could differ elsewhere of course. But could you please tell what is your experience with the battery?

Service centre didnt find any hardware issues, although it doesnt seem a normal situation for me. I would be grateful for advices and insights

I don't have a P20 Pro, but keep in mind that a 1% drop while using the phone actively (with the screen on) for 5 minutes isn't necessarily unusual. If you extrapolate, that means you'd get 500 minutes out of a full battery charge, which is over 8 hours of screen-on time (which is phenomenally good).

Maybe I am just expecting too much I've seen some reviews about heavy usage and 2 full days with this 4000Mah baterry maybe I am expexting too much. But my wife's usual p20 with lesser battery has similar performance.. It would be interesting to hear from other users

What do you have the screen resolution set at? I found setting my Mate 10 Pro and Mate 20 Pro on 'Smart Resolution' makes a noticable improvement to battery life with no noticable impact on viewing

2 full days of use does not mean 2 full days of screen-on time. The screen is usually the limiting factor, since it uses the majority of power when you're actively using the phone.

From 545am to 1030pm moderate use throughout I am left with about 64-66%. Really heavy use including an hour or two of photo editing gets me at about 45-50%.

5:45 AM would be with 95-100% after charging? If yes then it would be similar for me.

Yes off charger at 545am. But you said you go from 100% in the morning to 20% at night. That's not similar at all.

I would charge mine in the evening to 95, overnight it would be 91-92. And at 10pm it would be something like 18-29%

OK so to recap, my experience for a typical day with moderate use is 100% at 545am and then about 64% at 1030pm. Today for example was a bit lighter use and at 9pm I'm at 74%. I can easily get two full days with moderate use, maybe even a 3rd day with lighter use when it switches to battery saver.

Do you own a single sim or dual sim? Seems more than mine... In service centre they told they know no phones to last more than a full day

Single Sim. I'm using the SquareHome launcher too that gives me live tiles and updated badge counts so that is a bit more of a battery draw than stock or static launcher.

Most P20 Pro reviews cite about 2 days for the battery which is consistent with my experience. The service centre is giving you a line to get you to go away.

Mine is dual. Well, I've got 1 day 16 hr from 93 to 20 with SOT around 3 hr 20 minutes.

I understand about the centres. What would you advise, just changing the battery? I am not sure it is about it exactly because overnight is 2-3%, most drain is in SOT.

What's SOT? I would just go back to where I bought it and exchange it for another one.

SOT - Screen On Time. The amount of time your screen is actually on and in use. Since screen uses the most battery it's usually used as the measure of good/bad battery life on a phone
