It pretty much ties the IPad 3 in graphics, scoring a 57.8 as opposed to the iPad 3's 60 in GLbenchmark 2.1 pro (the standard benchmark for graphics power) beats it in BrowserMark and blows away all competition in Sunspider, scoring the best of any consumer tablet in the world. So no, if anything the Nexus 7 walks all over the iPad 3 in capability.

Yet the nexus still lags like a mofo reading a 200 pg PDF and small text are still rendered worse than my 12 inch 1280x800 laptop with ClearType. And Chrome stutters with scrolling on the Nexus but not on ipad. Sorry the nexus 7 doesn't walk all over iPad. Your benchmarks mean bupkis.

This is outright delusional. I agree iOS is stale as hell, but there is no comparison between the two screens. The difference between the two screens and how small text is rendered is a lot more than just the difference of 50 dpi.

It's 48 PPI man. I've seen them side by side and used both. It's not that noticeable at all. That's not to say that if I examined them both I couldn't tell you which had a higher resolution, but it isn't a big deal at all. My brother loves his IPad 3 and uses it heavily every day and he couldn't even tell the difference when checking out my Nexus. He was shocked to see that Google had included (in his words) a retina display (lol).

True enough. Unfortunately we seem to have picked up another iTroll. Note the false statements about lag and stutter. Chrome has zero lag and stutter and I read PDFs every bit as dense as he describes and do so with perfect smoothness and can easily make out all the text as it is nice and sharp.

That's so much Bologna. I'm comparing browsing smoothness and speed with my brothers IPad 3 as we speak. It's exactly the same, if not a little slower/choppier on the iPad 3. Chrome on the Nexus beats Safari hands down. Both Dolphin and Firefox for the nexus 7 perform perform better than any browser on the iPad. There's a reason it beats the Ipad 3 in BrowserMark. I'll continue to experiment for the next hour or so and let you know how it turns out. Also willing to bet I can find a 3rd party PDF reader that performs as well the iPad. I'll update you if I've got time for that.

It seems crazy that the Nexus 7 has hardware that is physically just as good as the iPad 3 (minus the screen) at less than half the price. Apple really rapes it's customers. Reminds me of Starbucks.

PDF Reader that is totally superior to anything on the iPad = RepliGo Reader. I actually prefer it to both the stock reader and Adobe because it has options like Night Reading View (changes to white text on black background) and text reflow.

Trying it right now. It's AT LEAST as smooth as the stock reader on the IPad. Seems to load up a PDF faster too.

If money is an issue I would just get the 8gig but honestly I think double the memory is worth the extra cash. If you are going to be putting a lot of games or other big apps go with the 16gig

On screen it's the same or slower - but saying the Nexus is faster bases on that is like saying a PC running a game at 1280x1024 at 60 fps is better than a PC running 1920x1080 at 50 fps. Totally illogical, deceptive fanboyism.

The Nexus 7 is different, and a big step up for Android, but it really lands somewhere between iPad 2 and iPad 3 in overall performance. I personally prefer the iPad screen size - for true portability I use my phone, while the iPad tends to replace my laptop for casual media consumption / work on the couch or while travelling.

I was one of the really POed late receivers of my Pre-Order, so I was not ready to like this thing.

Previous 7" Tablets for my comparison were Galaxy Tab2 7.0 and a rooted Nook Tablet.

Likes: Jellybean, Processor, Google Now, Google "Integration" across all products/services, Feel in the hand (Tab 2 was way too slick to hold),weight, glass seems less of a fingerprint magnet as others, good e-reader, can play Riptide GT uninterrupted - the Tab2 would crash - comma however, one time last night the screen went real dark and did crash, so I'm not sure if it was too much for the processor or not. (anyone else experienced anything like this??) Battery life seems good so far - I used Juice Defender Plus on the others with great results and will likely install in the Nexus to see if it improves things.

Not So Hot: Volume Limit, Resolution is not as great as I expected - crisp, but not the color pop I'd like to see, slight, barely noticeable screen lift in left edge, Not sure the music chip is as good as was in the Samsung.

Overall, she's a keeper fer sure. An upgrade from the Tab2, but not so much to do cartwheels over. The Tab2 is a really nice overall unit, just less powerful than the Nexus. And honestly if you root the Nook Tablet it's a nice unit as well.

Don't worry it too much. The dude was being a pretty obvious iTroll so a smack down was in order. Remember from earlier posts we compared this to a New iPad. And it is a bit faster (makes sense given the chipset and while the iPad display is denser the Nexus 7 is close enough that the difference is not readily noticeable. Again this is to be expected with an HD IPS panel with 1280x800 in a 7 inch area. Put those stats into a 10.1 area and the effect is not nearly the same.

Obviously there will be scenarios where a larger display like the iPad will be an advantage - watching movies comes to mind. And yes a 7 inch form factor can be a touch cramped in productivity scenarios (which is why I would be all over a 10 inch version of the Nexus tablet). But unfortunately for the iPad in productivity scenarios it is saddled with the over-siloed iOS that makes routine productivity work scenarios a painful experience (because app to app interop in iOS is basically nonexistent).

Also, extolling GoodReader (remember I have a New iPad so I have had to use GoodReader) as better than RepliGo was ludicrous. It's a nice product but RepliGo is a first class mobile PDF experience including Reflow that works properly and a host of other capabilities.

Then he trolled on saying that reading on a Nexus is the same as reading on a phone and how the 48ppi difference radically and massively effected his PDF productivity, Chrome on the Nexus 7 was choppy and terrible compared the IPad browsing and blah, blah, blah. The only time the the resolution is going to effect the productivity in pdfs is if you have the text in the PDF set to about 1/3 the size of newsprint, which seems like something you wouldn't be doing on the iPad 3 either.

The GPU in the Nexus 7 could easily power the IPad 3. Due to architecture compatibilities however, that is conjecture. What's not is that the Nexus 7 is as fast or faster at processing any graphics related activity natively than the IPad 3.

I'm at bro's house, so I'm going to do so an intense side by side hardware test and make a thread with the results. The one thing I'll be curious to see is what the fps of the nexus is vs the ipad 3 when I modify it's resolution to the same as the iPad. The screen may not be able to display it, but the GPU will still have to process it, so it should be a good comparison of the hardware in both units.
