OK, rather than answer all that, here's a quick walk through that will put CyanogenMod7.1 on your phone.
A) Prepare
B) Root your phone - Warning - This is the point your void your warranty, no turning back
C) Install a custom recovery, which is a mini operating system that lets you backup/update your phone
D) Once you are booted into recovvery, you can make a backup, and install a custom ROM and gapps
E) Restore your apps
If you have problems at any point after making your backup in recovery, you can reboot into recovery by turning off your phone, then holding down the home_key+volume_down+power till the LG logo disappears. Once in recovery, restore your backup (located in the clockworkmod/backup folder), and your phone will be back to the same state it was in before you flashed the custom ROM.
A) Prepare
- Download necessary files
- flash_image (download from here)
- IHO Recovery (download from here)
- BACKside-IHO rom (download from here, or download the rom of your choice)
- Google apps, better known as gapps (download from here)
- Backup everything
- Backup your sdcard to your computer or a drop-box type account
- Install Titanium Backup, backup all apps+data, but not system apps
- Backup your contacts etc to your gmail account
- Prepare phone
- Install Gingerbreak from the Market, but don't open it yet
- Install Terminal Emulator from the Market
- Be sure settings>>applications>>Unknown_sources is checked

B) Root your phone - Warning - This is the point your void your warranty, no turning back

- Install SuperUser from the Market, and go ahead and run it now
- Install Root Explorer or ES File Explorer from the Market, no need to open it yet
- Your phone should now be rooted, allowing you to do whatever you want with it
C) Install a custom recovery, which is a mini operating system that lets you backup/update your phone
- Install flash_image binary (you should have downloaded it to your sdcard in step A-1 above)
- Open your root capable file explorer, and copy the flash_image file from your sdcard to /system/bin
- Long press on it after you copy it, and set it's permissions (check all checkboxes)
- Use flash_image in terminal emulator to install a custom recovery
- Open Terminal Emulator
- Type in su (hit enter, this should change the prompt from a $ to a #)
- Type in flash_image recovery /sdcard/NAME_OF_RECOVERY.img (hit enter)
- After about 30 seconds, you should have your custom recovery installed
- Reboot into recovery
- Type in reboot recovery (hit enter)
- Your phone will now reboot into your custom recovery
D) Once you are booted into recovvery, you can make a backup, and install a custom ROM and gapps
- Select backup and restore, then backup. This creates a complete backup of your phone, handy if you have problems.
- Wipe cache partition
- Under advanced, wipe Dalvik Cache
- Under mounts and storage, format boot, system, data, and cache
- Under install zip from sdcard (not update.zip !!!) select choose zip from sdcard (again, not update.zip !!!)
- Select the ROM zip file you downloaded in step A-1 to your sdcard
- Select choose zip from sdcard again, and this time select the gapps zip file you downloaded in step A-1
- Press the back key to get back to the main menu, the select reboot system now
- It will take longer than normal to boot up, once it does you will be running your new custom ROM
E) Restore your apps
- Run Titanium Backup
- Restore all user apps + data
- DO NOT RESTORE SYSTEM APPS OR SYSTEM DATA !!!
