I am returning my HTC One (M8). Are you?

People also wanted a better camera with regular megapixels and htc didn't deliver on that.

HTC is kind of bound to their ultrapixel thing at this point. Their only other option was to abandon the technology, which would be a very hard decision for them to make after all their investment and hype.

i played with the gold one at Best Buy today; is the anodized aluminum supposed to feel kind of plastiky? I dunno, it didn't feel like the aluminum like on my Macbook Pro...Also, the bezel is big, and its noticible, but i could live with it though. Overall, it didn't wow me as much as i was hoping it to, but maybe i need to see the gunmetal one and play with it more.

We got ours yesterday and he got gun metal and I got gold. We love them! I haven't really messed with it much though. But If you had the old One then you'll really love this One. I like the double tap.

The real problem is the height - it is .35" taller than the LG G2 with a smaller screen (5.2 vs. 5.0") and unless you REALLY VALUE Boomsound it is a really tall phone that is difficult to handle with average sized hands. It is closer in height to the Note 3 (5.95") vs M8 (5.75) than it is to the G2 (5.40"). And while Knock on (or whatever HTC calls it) works most of the time the power button is almost impossible to reach with one hand COMFORTABLY (I couldn't do it with the M7 let alone the M8).

OK, but there is clearly less vertical space on the M8 than the M7 when the on screen buttons are visible, which is the vast majority of the time. Seems silly especially when you're looking at the HTC logo bar below that.

Have you ever heard of immersive mode? It's a new feature in KitKat that allows apps to go fullscreen, thus allowing the M8 to use all 5 inches of its display. More and more apps support immersive mode every day.

Heck, immersive mode is even coming to Chrome browser. You can enable it in the beta version now.

Not to mention, every video playback app and most games out there support immersive mode already.

So you can certainly make use of the extra screen real estate on the M8 a lot of the time, and it will only be easier to make use of it going forward as more apps add support for immersive mode.

Even when printing, I saw that somebody calculated that one could print a 5x9 with over 300ppi resolution. So it'll even be fine for printing smaller pics

That is assuming pictures have perfect sharpness / detail at 100% crop though, and almost no cameras, even high end DSLRs, can take pictures that look perfect at 100% crop. In my experience, pictures from my M7 start to drastically degrade once I start zooming past 50% crop on my desktop and laptop screens.

Here's a portion of an M8 photo at 50% crop...

Yeah that's awesome except the vast majority of the time is spent with buttons visible.

Well if you use apps with immersive mode, even if the buttons are shown, you can still see content underneath them so it's fine. And like I said, going forward, as more apps offer immersive mode, it will be less of an issue.

After using this phone from day one, I've decided to keep it. It's a very nice upgrade from the M7. The gunmetal is gorgeous, the phone much slimmer, and much faster. The camera isn't fantastic-the colors are washed out and pictures just aren't crisp. IMO, this is the only area this phone fails to improve on from last year. But overall, this is the nicest, sleekest, most reliable android device out there. And Sense 6 is much improved, and far better than TouchWhiz.

Oh, and the screen is much better looking. Colors are more saturated and vibrant than last year.

The screens are lined up at the top.....look down at the bottom of the screens and then tell me you are seeing more screen area on the right.
(Actually, to add insult to injury the top of the M8 on the right is also a hair under the M7.

Excuse the picture quality, photo taken with a Moto X, I didn't expect it to come out so dark.

I think this is a fairer comparison when it comes to screen area. M7 on top, M8 on bottom:

I have the Otterbox Commuter and my husband got the Defender last night. It makes the phone big but I know my phone is protected good. And I love this phone everything about it and I had the previous M7. I have small hands but it's not that big for me. I love the double tap. I only took a couple pictures last night and did a video of this band playing but haven't listened to it yet. I know on the M7 audio was great on the phone when I did video of loud music. Oh and the Zagg Glass screen protector is real nice too. I'm keeping this phone it's great. I'm sure there's still stuff it does I don't know about yet.

I have mine in an Otter Box, size is freaking huge, Otter Box makes it mega freaking huge but it's just right for me, I like the phone!

My thoughts on the phone boil down to great phone that is not for me. I found the camera to entirely adequate. I think HTC is on the right track; they just picked the wrong mega pixel count. If they took the same approach with an 8 mega pixel sensor and added back the optical image stabilization then they would be on to something. The screen was beautiful. The speakers were awesome. Sense is very good and adds something to the experience. All that is great, but this thing is freaking huge. Anyone who takes this to the gym will look like a giant tool. I didn't think I was a small phone guy, but the Moto X has spoiled me. Are you giving up on the M8 and why are you?

Well, after using it for 2 weeks, while I can't take it back, I'll definitely be selling it when the new phone that matches my old phone comes out. You summed it up perfectly, but I'll take it a step further.

My old phone (I say old, but it's only been out since November) vs the HTC
  1. Old Phone is quite a bit smaller, but has a bigger screen. Less bezel is always better!
  2. Old Phone is lighter, but it's all plastic, not metal, so I can't count that as a plus.
  3. Old Phone is thinner
  4. HTC has better speakers, but I always use my earbuds so who cares?
  5. Old Phone last longer. Old Phone 3000mAh vs HTC 2600mAh
  6. Where the older phone has the greatest advantage is the camera. Wow, After taking pictures from both phones and putting them side-by-side, it's not even close. The old phone blows the HTC out of the water. I mean, WTH was HTC thinking?

So, no, while I'll not be taking the HTC back, I will be selling it in the near future once the newer model of "my older phone" comes out.

I disagree with the height thing. I have small hands and I'm short and I had little difficulty in handling the M8. Because of its smaller width the phone is not that hard to use. To reach the top of the screen is not too difficult either. I played with one in store and its pretty easy to handle.

Agreed. It's really on the devs to implement (well) it at this point.

However, the YouTube app is incredibly annoying in that it randomly decides when hide the Status Bar and Nav Buttons =\

It hides them sometimes, but it just as often leaves the status and nav bar dimmed. Any idea why it does that?

Double-tap on the screen and it will alternate between dimming and hiding. I see the same behavior in the Netflix app. It's not really random.

I noticed that on YouTube as well after I updated the app. What I did was go into apps and "uninstall updates" under YouTube back to the last version before the update and it works fine.

Well, it's random for those that haven't noticed a pattern =\

Testing on my Nexus 5 I can consistently double tap to toggle between "dimming" the nav bar or hiding it, but the status bar is still wacky and is dimming/hiding for no noticeable reason.

In case anyone was interested in my opinion (haha), I played with the galaxy S5 today. The camera products better pictures, but it's significantly slower. They phone overall feels cheap for lack of a better word. With the One, you can tell it's a premium device.

The One had a nicer screen. The S5 has super saturated colors which I found irritating. I also didn't like TouchWiz at all. It's clunky and not easy to get used to, especially coming from a different phone.

The S5 is not flat on the back because the camera sticks out. So the phone rocks back and forth when you lay it down.

Overall, the S5 produces better pictures than the One. But in all other aspects, the One is a far superior premium device in my opinion.
