I have an EVO ...

One of the major issues that many of my friends/colleagues have had with the Pre hardware was with the headphone jack. Shockingly enough, Palm used a really cheap headphone jack that would get stuck in headset mode when you physically removed your headset, but the phone would keep recognizing that the headset was there. It made it really fun answering calls but not being able to hear the caller.

Did any of you who have been lucky enough to test out the EVO try using the headset? If so, how did it sound/function, and were there any "sticking" issues?

Happened to my phone and i got it replaced.....not knowing you could fix it yourself. That was the best built Pre I had....the one i have now is a close second but the spacebar on my keyboard is mushy...like it doesn't feel like i'm pushing a button.

I'm used to it now but meh.

For you, stay with the crappy hardware. Android does everything webOS can, but it may not be intuitive enough for you. You don't close apps in Android, the system closes it itself after an extended period of non-use. Which is helpful because you can call it back and multi-task without killing battery life. I've owned 5 Pre's and 1 Hero. The switch took me a couple of days to get used to, but I was amazed at just how much more I could do with 1.5 Android than what I could do with a Pre, period. I have been running this version of sense on my phone for 2 months now. It flies on the Hero, will do circles around an overclocked pre on the Evo. Plus bluetooth file transfer comes standard on Sense 2.1, you don't even have to download the app. switching between programs is easy, the notifications bar tells you the same things as WebOS' and the screen is very responsive to touch (Evo more since it will have new technology in the screen to recognize more fingers in multi-touch, and what you use, nail, thumb, glove on/off). If you are willing to come to android with an open mind, you will love the phone. If not, then you're just not going to like it. Not being mean, this is just me being honest. I've made the switch, and I'm happy I did. WebOS' beta software compared to android and caused me a great deal of frustration other than the crappy hardware. The hardware is what drew the line for me.

Yeah the Pre does have crappy hardware. I had to do the 720 CPU hack. I am a tech so i do have an open mind. I will take your word for it. I am pretty excited to learn a new phone os.

If any of you are worried about the battery life, you can buy a Seidio extended battery (1750mAh) that will fit in the Evo out of the box since it uses the same battery as the Hero. It won't be Ferrari red but it'll do the job. And the 1750 battery fits in a standard enclosure, so you don't even have to use some nasty-ass back-piece and make the phone even thicker.

Android does everything webOS can

  • Simultaneously running 50 apps, that are actually running and not just paused in the background. With no lag or slow down, then effortlessly switching between them while still in another app, and not having to go back to the home screen and reopen(retap) them.
  • Being able to play real 3D games like Avatar and H.A.W.K. or Tim Clancy.
  • Having control over what apps I want open, and what apps I want closed.
  • Synergy between apps, and all my messaging/chat/calendar
  • Push email for all my email accounts with any email provider. [In just one place]
  • Not having to jailbreak/root my phone to have hacks, and tweaks on my phone. [so not to void my warranty]
  • Getting updates as soon as they come out.

This are just a few of the things that my friend had showed me, that WebOs can do the Android can not, and why I consider the Palm Pre[Plus] for an phone I might upgrade to.

Although Evo screen is nice for watching movies, kinda like a pocket video player...ie Archos

^The Pre Plus can since it has more RAM. The regular Pre might run 10-12 apps if lucky, though I rarely have more than 5 open.

I purchased the free Pixi to try sprint out while waiting for the Evo. The more that I play with the WebOS the more I like it, now I AM GETTING THE EVO, but I really think a WebOS device will stay in the fam. either the Pixi or a Pre, its a easy OS to learn which is great for my mother, as well as no "Enhanced Experience Charge" the charge being the most persuasive reason as she will not be using that much data if any at all.

Edited to add: Its the reason not to get 2 Evo's. I can understand the charge for the hotspot, not the ownership charge.

Whew! Gotta blow the dust off of some of these old, outdated talking points.

The Pre does not "simultaneously run" 50 apps. What you see in that vid is the Pre OPENING 50 apps without getting a memory error. The vast majority of them are dormant immediately afterward, and no one is using even a quarter of that at any one time. Additionally, you DO have to "go to the home screen" (card view) to move between them unless you want to use "advanced gestures" and swipe through one at a time from left to right. Nothing like linear movement to make the entire concept pointless.

"Real" 3D games is also a silly canard. Palm got a whopping two studios, Glu Mobile and Gameloft, to port existing titles over with their PDK. EA contributed an additional few, but NO ONE is making 3D gaming apps FOR the Pre. Meanwhile, Android DOES have "real" 3D games like ExZeus and Backbreaker Football. Need for Speed Shift is launching with the Evo. More titles are on the way from multiple studios.

Homebrewing your Pre is no different than rooting your Android device. Synergy is already largely replicated in Android 2.0. Feature-for-feature, most of these advantages have slipped away due to Palm's incompetence.

It's true, it's all on a vid at Precentral.

I'll speak on a few of these since i own a Pre now.

While yes, that video did come out...the Pre has a bad bad memory leak problem. On my normal Pre i've gottn 12-15 cards at the max....but i've also maxed out at ZERO cards.

Yes, "too many cards" error with no cards open. Its embarrassing when that happens when you are showing your phone off. Luckily a few months ago a garbage collection app came out that helped...but it doesn't help if you get the error before you can open the app.

I will say, The Pre has the best multitasking metaphor on a phone right now. Hands down...the card system is useful, fun and intuitive. That will be what i miss the most when I get the Evo.

On your other points...you can get a task manager for android that lets you close specific apps...but from all reviews, the Incredible hasn't needed one yet. But i am one who likes control as well so i'll prob. still get one.

Android also has 3D games now as well. No not as many as the Pre because well...it wasn't an android focus. I have 4 3D games on my Pre and i only really played 1 worth a damn. The others i bought because of good sales....haha 99 cents is very tempting no matter what game.

Synergy....oh hell yeah i'll miss this....though android does have synergy aspects as well.

EMail....its annoying the stock email app is separate from Gmail but its because of the specific difference in GMail vs. other email providers. I have a Gmail and an AOL account....as long as notifications work fine on both i won't mind two different app windows to be honest. AOL is my junk email account....GMail is my friends only email address.

On the Pre...yes we don't have to "jailbreak" or "root" but that is because the phenomenal work form the community and removed users needs to need to manually root our phones. They software they developed does it all on the back end itself.

Even with some of the great things about the Pre...you know what is the number 1 reason why i'm changing? Because the device is slow as hell. Sometimes it has bouts of speedy moments...but i more often than not have a laggy experience when i need to do something quickly. I'll revisit webOS next year though.

Whoa lets not get crazy.

Palm's small size and lack of money is why these advantages were met. Palm at its size couldn't compete vs. the current Goliaths of the phone world.

For what they did in less than a year though? I still respect that greatly.

Palm lacks competitive hardware and clout. A fast CPU with larger screen would partly keep me on board. HP brings a little clout but not sure if it will be enough to get the app count to the 10s of thousands in the next year. But to be honest, I'm not finding many Android apps that are worth leaving Pre for. I'm leaving cause I can't read the damn small Pre screen.
