Hi,

The local B&N called me and said that they had received one NC. If I wanted it, I needed to get my butt over there, pronto. So, I did. :)

I'm trapped at work, so I haven't had a chance to do much with it other than plug in the charger. (Not easy! I had to push worryingly hard.) The Out of Box Experience wasn't as good as it could have been, since the dang thing wants to connect to wifi before you can complete the set up. All the wifi here is locked down, so that's disappointing. They really ought to allow users to skip that.

But who cares about all of that.... On to rooting! :p

I'm not quite sure what to do next. Once I take it home and connect it to the internet, it's gonna to update itself to 1.1.0, right? I was thinking about trying to root it, block updates, and install the pre-rooted 1.1.0 right away, but I'm having second thoughts. For two reasons:

  1. I'd kind of like to leave it stock for a week or two, just to make sure I've got properly working hardware, and to get familiar with the stock configuration. (It'll let me better appreciate the post-rooting experiance!)
  2. I've ordered a couple MSDHC cards, but they haven't arrived yet, so that limits my options a bit.

So, I'm thinking about throwing caution to the winds, and letting it update itself to the OTA 1.1.0. That may force me to jump through some extra hoops once I'm ready to root, but I think I'm okay with that.

Are there any downsides to my plan that I am missing?

Thanks. That's kinda what I was thinking. And heck, even the "hard way" doesn't sound that bad.

Well, I'm still waiting for the SD card to arrive. But yeah, it seems like running Froyo off of a card would be a good way to get my feet wet.

So, I got my new NC home and hooked to the net. That was a bit of a pain in its own right. It turns out that the NC can not connect to a wifi network that has spaces in its name (SSID). Every other device I've ever tried has had no difficulty, but the NC refused to even try to connect until I had changed the name.

It's running 1.1.0 right out of the box, so it turns out that didn't have any choice in the matter after all.

So far, I'm not super impressed with the hardware. Scrolling within the browser is not very smooth, and it seems to ignore a lot of my taps, especially in the screen corners. But, hopefully a lot of that will improve once I get a "real" OS and browser installed.

That may be sooner than I had planned. :)

My Wifi SSID has spaces in the name, and it connects just fine (in fact both of my wifi SSIDs have spaces). It connects to both with no issues..

Weird. Good to know. I'll have to try changing the name back. I thought about trying that anyway, now that I'm past that dang setup app.

I"m running rooted stock, overclocked, and I still have occasional issues with corner taps, but it doesn't seem to be a constant thing... just from time to time.
