I went to the store to buy it today and loved it when I first picked it up but after investigating the 3 live demo phones in store, I walked out without buying on.

All three display units had hardware defects. One had a faulty volume rocker. One had a huge gap between the aluminum and the white plastic on the sides and the other had a screen that seemed to be set lower in the casing so if you'd run your finger down the screen to the bottom speaker, you'd bump into the aluminum and looking at it you could see that the aluminum was much higher up then the screen. Things like this bug me and I would want to deal with the drama of returning one. Have had too many issues with HTC phone defects in the past.

I have yet to see one with such defects as to avoid purchase.

Someone else posted that the first one they were given, and the demo unit in that store, had defective power buttons that were difficult to operate.

One reason I never buy the first batch of anything, be it phones, computers, cars, or anything else. Let the manufacturer work out the production line issues on someone else.

Yeah it really seems hit or miss with the early batches. Seems I was lucky and mine is perfect. Question though. Since you would be buying from the store wouldn't you have the opportunity to see if there are any apparent physical problem before you left?

To an extent but they always seem very adamant about charging you and setting it up first without letting you see it. And what I consider a defect may not be one to whomever is helping me. The chick kept trying to get me to add a line to buy it too when all I wanted was to buy off contract. Kinda got old.

Doesn't surprise me. It is after all, an htc.

Oh please. Every manufacturer has quality issues on occasion.

He just has a hatred for all things HTC.

To the op, after purchasing the phone and activating it, you could do your preview of the phone for hardware defects, and if any, exchange in the store then and there. They should have a high enough stock right now that they would not deny you that based on available models. Never settle for less than you pay for. My husband and I went back to Verizon every day for a week until they had a replacement for his defective phone. I called and they said they didn't have any stock, went in anyways to find they were wrong. He ended up switching phones at the last minute anyways, but its the moral that counts. You can't be screwed over if you don't let yourself be. It is a first batch phone, so I'm sure there are quite a few kinks that need to be worked out. If you don't have the time or patience for that, buy a phone already on the market.

I am debating exchanging mine. The screen sits higher then the top speaker grill. Normally it wouldn't bother me as it is very subtle.
However, I swipe the notifications down multiple times an hour and every time I do I am reminded of the screen not being flush and it makes my brain think I might cut my finger every time I do so, even though I know it won't. It is just really annoying.

I have the same issue with the screen sticking up slightly higher than the top speaker grill. I just make sure I'm more accurate with grabbing the notification bar so I don't have to feel it. I don't want to go through the trouble of exchanging it.

I think you should exchange it because the screen will probably be more susceptible to getting scratched in that spot since it is higher than the speaker grill.

Although I love the new HTC One, I for one will wait as I was an early adapter to the iPhone 5 and since have replaced 5 of them. Switched to a Windows phone for two days went back to the iPhone and the Bad news is this one will not allow you to unlock the phone while charging. Screen is unresponsive.
In short I think all new phones have issues but as far as what guinnkevinr was saying about the display models? You know people are going to beat those things up.

I have the same issue with the glass slightly higher than the top speaker grill. The bottom is slightly off as well. I don't care. The rest of the physical aspects of the phone seems perfect and it's not that big a deal for me.

im thinking of buying too but do i really need to buy this ??? im very happy with nexus 4 ..i like the design of nexus 4 better shiny glass both sides

My current iPhone is like that and it has saved my screen countless times. I drop it and the edges are raised so the screen doesn't hit the ground. I certainly won't mind if my One has this

Except that the US isn't getting early batches. Don't forget that the One has been on the market for over a month elsewhere. Unfortunately, HTC doesn't seem to be able to fix the quality issues. The earlier European models have the exact same problems. I have one that's more or less problem free (also have a slightly crooked volume rocker, but not bad enough to return it) but I've been reading tons of messages on all kinds of forums about quality issues.
