I rooted with unrevoked.. HAPPY!!

I just installed the free mobile hotspot (from the sticky thread) on stock 2.2, and it works great. Don't need to run a ROM to get it. Plus I've managed to uninstall some of the bloatware (Sprint Nav, Friend Stream, Peep, etc.) by using Titanium Backup.

I know there are reasons to check out ROMs, but I'm happy for now. :)

Cool cool. That's pretty much what I want to do too.

Everyone says it is easy but it looks too complicated -- install 2 programs, hold switches up and down etc. Is there any REALLY easy to root? I only want to be able to install a few programs and change a few settings (Backup, roam only, a few others.) On the Pre people figured out how to install patches without actually rooting the phone. Can't someone do that for the Evo?

Not for 2.2, at least not yet. I think there was a "one touch" root for 2.1. There's no comparison to the Pre because you didn't have to root it. It was left open by design, CMIIW.

Wow that was super easy! I installed the Google Wireless Tether and now have Hotspot and I uninstalled the Bloatware with Titanium. I only have one last question. How do I disable some things from launching at boot. I know I read it somewhere but I can't find it now.

Oops, I uninstalled FriendStream and Stocks, yet one of the Stickies says to leave those alone or you'll have problems. I've seen none yet. I'm screwing things up already!

Did u do a nandroid backup? If you did you can restore it.

So I did it, too... I think. How do I know if I'm rooted? I tried to uninstall Nascar to see if it worked, and the "uninstall" button is greyed out.

download an app like 'superuser'
open the app
follow the prompt for first-time set up (local>>any username you want>>)
then at the ms-dos looking screen, key SU and hit enter
if a # symbol pops up, then it means you've granted yourself SuperUser access to the phone--and are therefore rooted

uncertain if your root enables that--with whatever Kernel you have running,

but i purchased an app called "StartUpAuditor" that allows me to prevent apps (even bloatware) from starting up on boot, or disabling them completely from running even after boot.

i think it's like .99c in the marketplace, really not that bad if it's your only alternative when you can't find any other option with your root package.

Actually that does not seem to be true. When I first got the Pre there was a lot of stuff that you could only do if it were rooted. But after a while people figured out how to do it without rooting.

I'm not too worried about those apps I removed, as I haven't seen problems so far. All this talk of doing a Nandroid backup, yet nowhere seems to have instructions of how to do it or what it does... Like I said, I have lots of reading to do, but most of these documents assume some basic knowledge and term/acronym dropping that I'm not up on.

Boot into the recovery and you will a nandroid option. Click it then choose backup.

Heres a good base Rom to start with, in the hack section try AC ROMS, it has sense, and is awesome.

Also good to try is Baked Snack.

I'd try these out first before moving to a more advanced Rom like CM6

I use unrevoked last night too. Is there any way to get free mobile hotspots without having to use a different ROM? I've installed Wireless Tether for Root Users but I can't get Windows 7 or Mac OS X computers to get an internet connection. Is it cause I'm only on the stock 2.2 ROM?

SURE CAN,, if your rooted and want free hotspot, there are apps in the market for this. U must be rooted.

I downloaded wirelessthether last night.. didnt work.. then i downloaded the .apk file and and now i can tether!

i hope theres no problems if you delete stocks off your phone.. i already did  nothing at all seems wrong with the phone though.. kind of feels alot faster to be honest

ALSO no one really answered on how to get back to stock! (although im glad this thread got so much feedback)

Thank you guys for your answers it really helped, one more question though.

I really like the Android unlock screen and i understand HTC made their lock screen permanent in the last update... do i have to uninstall this to get the android lock screen now that i've rooted?
Also how would i reverse it if i did uninstall the HTC lock screen.

Thank you

You can try this in adb:

rm /system/app/HtcLockScreen.apk

But i'd recommend pulling it local first just in case you need to put it back.

It worked great for me and I've even installed the Free wifi hotspot and it works great as well :)
