Okay, so it's coming up on a month since the Nexus S launched, and the N1 still doesn't have Gingerbread. Anyone else think that's weird? Google didn't have to wait for the code, so they could have been working on the update all along.

My theory: They're holding off on the update to get people to buy the Nexus S. The wait for an update might be enough to push someone who's on the edge about picking it up.

Or maybe I'm just full of crap. :) Wouldn't be the first time.

Definitely. This is BS. What's the point of getting Nexus S if Nexus 3 will come out with Ice Cream and all Nexus S owners will have to wait for it just like everyone else...

With the new rumors of Android 2.4 gingerbread just around the corner maybe they were waiting for it before they did the wide release.

just install the Gingerbread ASOP.. i did and have been enjoying it ever since.

Feel lucky that up until now you haven't had to wait for your OEM to "optimize" it for their overlay. Google said it's coming, I'd take their word way more than Verizon's, Samsungs, or anyone elses for that matter.

well of course DURH!
its only smart marketing
if they release 2.3 for nexus one
the comparisons will be on engadget and all these other site between the nexus s and n1
and less people will buy them

i personally compared the n1 to the s at bestbuy and its not worth my extra 100- 200 id be spending(sell my n1 for 300-400 then buy the s for 529)

either way tho its still coming to the nexus one sooner than other phones

Or maybe they want to make it work correctly. There are issues with the OpenGL drivers, and the camera drivers.

Would you rather Google just hack it to make it work like others are doing, or take the time to write correct software for the N1 hardware? As ingenious as the folks hacking GB to work on the N1 are, they will also be the first ones to change to the more stable, and correct way to get all hardware working, once Google figures it all out.

Remember, Gingerbread was not written for the N1, and it will have to be made to be backwards compatible.

Someone said it earlier in the post but rumor is 2.4 is around the corner. I think that Gingerbread could be like Eclair and have two updates in it EX. 2.0,2.1 then 2.3,2.4.

It would have made sense going by the name to have Gingerbread out around Christmas but oh well..... if 2.4 is around the corner, then great... the newer the better. Lets skip all of 2.0 and move on to 3.0.:p

I'm sure we will see Gingerbread soon....if not they better take down that gingerbread statue in front of Google's headquarters.

It was out around Christmas. Dec 16 to be exact. They even gave you the source code to build it yourself if you didn't feel like waiting for last year's dev phone to get the update.

In that interview with Engadget, they made the software first then decided to make the Nexus S. So they probably developed Gingerbread on the Nexus One, and Gingerbread was written for the N1.

Think about it. Its all marketing. When you buy a new car, and next year a new generation of your car comes out, do you scream "conspiracy" when they won't take the new generations's engine and make it available for your car? I know its apples to oranges, but new, "exclusive" software is how sales increase with mobile devices. If Gingerbread (i.e. Latest and Greatest) was readily available for every Android powered phone, what's the point of having new phones come out every month?

I of course would love to have Gingerbread on my Captivate, but I'm not pining over it as much as I'd rather just get a newer phone when the time comes. I guess I just look at it like leasing a car, much like the scenario I mentioned above. :)

Exactly.... its business. They could probably make the greatest phone in the world but what's going to keep you coming back for something better. They're out to make money. There will always be new software and a better version of something every year to keep you wanting more. They will come out with Gingerbread and a year later something newer will be released making your device obsolete. The stradegy is do do it in a timely manner leaving the consumer hanging and wanting more.

I am in agreement with you. This waiting for gingerbread has become somewhat tiring.

Just give it to us already.

Like I said earlier.. install the Google ASOP version and enjoy it now.(with some quirks of course)

This waiting for gingerbread is getting ridiculous. What the hell is the long dragged out bull **** wait all about. It must be ready for OTA DL, don't care what anyone thinks this is just bull ****. Tryng to get all the itchy geeks to say frig it and go buy a plastic Nexus S without any features. I'm just venting, had a tough day with all this lousy snow in Boston area. I just want my gingerbread for my N1. Please??????????

VCL,

I think alot of people feel the same frustration you are feeling. I want it to get here as well, but i do want honeycomb much worse than gingerbread.
