I thought Thunderbolt had 8 GB Internal Storage

You're wrong. Fairness in the marketplace is required. It means that consumers must have a fair way of being able to comparison shop. How is a consumer supposed to know that the 32GB SD card they purchase may have 20GB of non-removable manufacturer third party presentations? If this is the case, the manufacturer is required to disclose this fact to the public so they can make an educated choice before purchase. With regard to 32GB actually formatting to only 29.7 GB, it says quite clearly (due to law and reasonable disclosure) that the card does have a capacity of 32GB but common formatting results in a different amount that virtually anyone can ascertain and assume by using these devices.

You are quite mistaken. If Verizon had said 8GB of user accessible on-board memory, it would be different. But they made no claim about that memory. All they advertised was that it had it. Verizon has made NO CLAIM whatsoever that the 8GB can be used for anything. All that they've advertised is that it has it.

No - it's a real problem. I have 23GB of music I transferred from my Incredible, which had 8GB in it. If I'm going to record high definition video, I'd like to have at least a full hour of recording time and do it to the internal drive, which is faster, with room to spare. If I had known that I had a fraction of the 8GB, I may have waited for the Bionic instead, as may have many other people.

Its not a problem at all. Just another ginned-up BS faux controversy by people that need a life or a hobby. You can't access the Bolt's internal memory for any reason. EVERYTHING is stored on the SD card.

Most of all, it's just not right to advertise a promise to deliver 8 loaves of bread in a grocery store order and, for the same money, deliver just 3. If that's fair, let me know your contact information. I have plenty of stuff to sell you and underdeliver.

Again, Verizon never said you could use it. The phone has 8GB of eMMC memory. That is a fact.

Bah, I had my 8 gigs of internal storage in my Incredible, and I was able to put my files there, like 7 gigs. Also I had my 32 gigs card installed. Now I do not have it with a newer phone. :(

Nothing is using it. Fact, or not. So that they are advertising it, is pretty crappy. Nothing like unethical marketing to sell a device. This device will never have access to the entire 8gb emmc, only half of it. Never.

I got the dl on whats going on. Basically, yes, its 8gb, but the way they are using it, only 4gb or so is usable.

Shame on HTC, shame on Verizon for advertising it this way.

pretty much to make a long story short, Verizon and HTC should never have noted the 8gb emmc internal ... they should've left that line out.. and said that it had 768 Ram and the 32gb micro sd card... that may have gone over much better than the loss of 70% of the 8gb, whether useable or non-usable. but i was under the impression "stated" or "not stated" that i would have had 40gbs of usable storage.. that's the reason i bought it along with it's speed and 3g, 4g capabilities....

Are you being serious right now? It has 8 GB of eMMC. That is a fact. It doesn't matter if only 4 of it is usable. There is physically 8 GB of memory in the phone, so there's nothing unethical about it.

Thats like saying hey this car can got 200 miles an hour. Then finding out it only goes 120 the potential is there but they mislead you a stray purposely to sell a product.

The evidence provided indicates that you don't know what you're talking about.

you guys have to admit this is pretty shady. it basicly equates to false advertising. most laymans would perceive the 8gb of storage to be used for whatever they wish combined with the 32gb. most consumers donot understand partitions and RAM or ROM, etc. in the world of ipods and ipads you see a storage number thats what you think it has.

a good example would be for the specs of vehicle to be given and it states there is 20 cubic feet of trunk storage. when your brand new shiny vehicle is delivered you find it has only 5 cubic feet? WTF! well you quickly see there are a spare tire, a tool kit, etc. well that sucks, you call the manufacturer or dealer and they say well the trunk actually does have 20 cubic feet but the majority portion is used for things we think you will really need! thats pretty ****ty!

Is their a ay to get all of our sd card back and most of the phone storage back?

Go buy a car that gets up to 30mpg, and is used as a selling point.

Then find out it can only get up to 15mpg, in reality.

Then come back to me.

It's like they used chips that had a bad area, and partitioned that area out, but went, "well, it's still an 8 gig" so sell it. I don't think it is cool. It's apparent that some consumers here are fine with it, but to convince everyone that nothing is fishy, makes no sense.

The difference is in the way the eMMC was programmed. This appears to be a 8GB eMMC that was programmed using Single Level Cell programming. Basically one bit per cell, where the default to get 8GB is 2 bits per cell (MLC). So only storing half the bits = ~ 4GB. The tradeoff is faster access time to the memory. No false advertising, just not a complete description.

Lol I love the opposing viewpoints in this thread because they are both radical to me.

First, yea, if they advertise 8 you should at least get something like 6.8. So people def have a point.

BUT

Come on, you have 36gb of storage and whatever they did with the extra space the phone is amazing, so really?

I understand that but to use it as a selling point is shady as hell.

Agree its not the clearest bit of advertising ever - but more then likely they did the spec sheet up off the parts list, which would have shown a stock, default 8GB cap eMMC. Ah well, it is what it is - personally Im happy for the extra speed boost.

Here is a link to the HTC support forum for the thunderbolt and this user funkyb in the 9th post down says that using some type of dev tool you can see all the memory used and that we do have 8GB but it is used for data.

I understand it but at the same time I don't like it. I know 2.5GB is a lot of space but at the same time thinking I was getting 8GB for app storage instead of the small amount I was used to on the OG droid. Having 8GB of onboard storage really help to make my mind up about this phone instead of waiting on the bionic. I know they never said it had 8GB of app storage but when you see it posted as 8GB internal memory I only assumed that most of it would be available to me for storage for apps, emails, sms, mms and anything else I felt like putting on my phone.

Almost 70% of Internal Memory is Missing. - HTC Thunderbolt (Verizon) - Android Forums - HTC Community

I don't agree with the earlier poster saying it does not have 8GB. Below is the real scoop, but first I want to note that this morning I received an email from HTC confirming the below analysis is correct. An android developer took a look at this issue for me using debug tools. He queried the actual internal file system. The block below shows what he found: ******************************************************************** $ export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH $df /dev: 305764K total, 0K used, 305764K available (block size 4096) /system: 869884K total, 401260K used, 468624K available (block size 4096) /data: 2734896K total, 380720K used, 2354176K available (block size 4096) /cache: 434916K total, 34844K used, 400072K available (block size 4096) /devlog: 21100K total, 4132K used, 16968K available (block size 4096) /mnt/asec: 305764K total, 0K used, 305764K available (block size 4096) /app-cache: 8192K total, 504K used, 7688K available (block size 4096) /mnt/sdcard: 31154688K total, 639936K used, 30514752K available (block size 32768) /mnt/secure/asec: Permission denied /mnt/asec/com.rovio.angrybirdsseasons-1: 18688K total, 16704K used, 1984K available (block size 4096) $ Those are from mine. Looks like the 8gb is there just spread out across file systems. *********************************************************************** Now if that looks like gobbly good to you, here's how to interpret the results: Ignoring the fact that 1 GB = 1024 MB = 1,048,576 KB, ignoring the mounted SD card (/mnt/sdcard/), and using powers of 10 to keep this simple: The above adds up to about 4.7GB. This means the other 3.3 GB is on the 'access denied' branch shown above (/mnt/secure/asec/) and/or on the recovery partition (which might be the same thing as /mnt/secure/asec/). This seems perfectly reasonable to me, and is a normal way to set up the file system. Furthermore, here is an excerpt from my conversation with HTC. I've removed a lot (related to other issues, and also has personally identifiable info): ================================ ...the HTC Thunderbolt has 8 GB of internal memory. However, most of that memory is put aside for the phone's operating system, messages(text, picture, email, etc), built in applications, etc. This means that you will not see the full 8GB available.... ================================ This confirms the developer's analysis shown above, and an interesting corollary to take away from this is that storage required for messages, pictures, email, built-in-app-data, etc, DOES NOT use up any of the 2.7 GB we are seeing. The 2.7 GB we are seeing is the 'do what you want with it' storage for other items. The rest is reserved for operating system files, built-in-app-data, the recovery partition, etc... I consider this issue resolved to 100% satisfaction.

This falls in line with the email I received with HTC about the issue:

Dear ,

Very good question, . I would be more than happy to provide you with some insight regarding the Thunderbolt's internal memory.

As I'm sure you're already aware, 5.5 of the phone's internal storage is reserved for system use, only. This is where the phone's system files (including pre-installed apps, and temp data) reside. This is also where updates to your phone go, when it's time to do a system update. The majority of the space is being used to make sure your phone is running at optimal performance levels.

pretty much what most of us had guessed.
they prob should have advertised it as having 3gigs of storage per the other android devices advertising of memory. oh well.
