I wanna know your opinions about the notch.

Is the notch bad?

I'm debating the 3XL vs. Note 9 vs. iphone XL. Seems like the iphone has the biggest screen for video content but I'm not sure about the notch. When I am watching videos, are the screen sizes actually 6.5 inches or is it less with the notch? What about the Pixel XL 3? Is it really 6.3 inches or more like 5.5 if you hide the notch?
Can the iPhone zoom so no black bars when watching 16/9 media? I know note9 does. How about the Pixel?

I"m going to get to Best Buy and go hands on first before makind a final opinion. In pics its big and ugly so we'll see what it looks like in real life. I'm still favoring getting the smaller version at this point.

Yes on both iPhone and Pixel, that’s more of an YouTube app feature I believe. Works fine on Xs Max and worked on my previous other recent android phones. I also see that working on Pixel 3 XL in some hands on videos.

I was actually thinking about Netflix and Xfinity Stream. I don't watch Youtube. I like watching tv shows on my phone. They are always 16/9.

Along with my OG Pixel XL, I use the Essential PH-1 so I've been dealing with a notch for almost a year. It is part of the device and don't even notice it. I use a solid black wallpaper on my devices because i like the contrast it creates for the app icons, so the notch will blend right in.

I'm a pixel fan, and the newer pixel actually appeals to me, yes that includes the weird notch. XD. I don't necessarily like notches, but I think it will be a thing that stands out among all the phones. I do wish it was smaller. And I have read that you can check it out on Verizon stores? I have to go to one now haha.

Pixel 3 XL has the ugliest notch. But Smaller pixel looks cute

Weird statement.. For me, the notch doesn't bother me. We all knew 2018 was the year of the notch, and 2017 was the beginning of that. It is just one of many steps towards going bezel-less. Let's be honest here. 2017 was the year of shrinking bezels. Before 2017, we were all perfectly fine with a 50-60% screen to body ratio. Now, we want more and more and things have to change in the design of the phone to make that happen.

I think 2019 will be the year of shrinking notches. Then, by 2020 or 2021, they'll have sensors in the display and maybe even speakers in the display. That, or the side or bottom/top firing speakers will become the norm.

If people don't like the big notch why don't they just get OnePlus 6T with a water drop notch.
OnePlus 6T is stock android with few extra tweaks of they own.
Oppo Next, Vivo have no notch. Can buy from black market.
Otherwise you can wait for Google Pixel 4 Ultra next year.

Because it don't work on all carriers and some just don't trust the company
I love my 1+6

The notch for me is just meh. As long as all apps work well and it doesn't interfere with the user experience, then it probably wouldn't be a bother.

While I wish it wasn't there I don't think it will stop me from picking up an 3XL. I feel like the software benefits and camera feature of the phone outweighs the slight inconvenience of the notch.

I just came from Best Buy and saw it in person....

The Pixel 3 XL's notch isn't "ugly" but it is a huge waste of screen real estate, resources, and effort. Google was obviously just following the trend rather than designing the phone as it should've been. With small notches or the teardrop notches that are becoming common (like the one plus 6t), using full-screen and overlapping content into the notch area isn't that bad since you're not missing much of the content. For example, if you really wanted to, it wouldn't suck too much to watch a youtube video, use the camera app, or play a game in full screen on the OnePlus 6t. But, the XL's notch is so big, that you basically have to keep content out of the notch area of the screen because it'd be blocking too much content. Also, it seems silly to wrap around to the corners of the top of the screen which are too far to reach and touch, but still have a bezel chin at the bottom. On top of the notch not making sense from a usability standpoint, it is asymmetrical, just as the original Pixel had an asymmetrical design (earpiece at the of phone with nothing at the bottom where there should've been stereo speakers). Google should've just made a larger version of the regular sized Pixel 3.

It's not that big. Its smaller than the new iPhones and not that much wider than the upcoming 6t. People are just blowing it out of proportion. I get people dont like the notch. Doesn't bother me. I was one who thought it was much bigger than the rest but after seeing it in person its smaller than the new iPhones so I'm good.

And if you really dont like it they made it possible to hide it and if you dont want to do that get the regular pixel. Many options.

And do you have inside information on the P4 that indicates that it won't have a notch?

The Pixel 3 XL is actually the same size body as the XS Max, but has a 0.2" smaller screen. And it has the same size screen as the OnePlus 6 or 6t, but a larger body. BUT the whole point of what I'm trying to say is if you consider that the usable screen area of the Pixel 3 XL does not include the notch area, whereas it does include the notch area on a phone like the OnePlus 6t, the whole discrepancy is exacerbated. The Pixel 3 XL may have the same diagonal screen size as the 6t, but besides using the notch as a notification bar, the notch area shouldn't be included in diagonal screen size. And this is fine, it's still a great phone.

I'm not saying it's a deal-breaker for people that are into phablets. I'm just saying that it's definitely not an effective use of screen or smart design. It's definitely not a negative in my opinion, but it doesn't really add much.
