[ICS][4.0.4][4/2] Official IMM76K Update Thread for the VZW GNex

Re: [ICS][4.0.4][5/23] Official IMM76K Update Thread for the VZW

Finally rooted and got this sucker on. It's sad Verizon still hasn't pushed out an OTA. Anyway I never really had a big problem before the update but now i notice my phone is a lot smoother and snappier. I gotta test my 4G-3G hand off to see if that's better which was the only other issue I had when I was on 4.0.2

I flashed the one from your OP. Is that the one you're referring to? I might just do it all over again and see if that fixes it.

Excellent, enjoy :)

It's not in my OP; it should be in the rom/development subforum. It's essentially a "rom" of this OTA, so I didn't have to go back to stock or anything like that ;).

Why can't I download the update, put it on my "SD" card, and install it using stock recovery? Is that possible without unlocking or rooting?

Forgive me I'm new to the GNex.

If you rename it update.zip it might be; however, this method here has proven to work, so take that for what it is.

I am unlocked but not rooted. I used fastboot to flash the leaked 4.0.4 OTA that came out awhile ago. The OP refers to being on 4.0.2. Can I flash this using fastboot or will already being on 4.0.4 cause it to fail?

Re: [ICS][4.0.4][5/23] Official IMM76K Update Thread for the VZW

In stock recovery mode, there is no option to "apply update from sd card". The only option they give you is to "apply update from /cache".
If you can figure out a way to get the update.zip file into your /cache, then it just might work.

Thanks. That's what I wanted to know. I read that in order to get access to the phone's cache, you must be rooted. It all makes sense now. ClockWork Recovery temporarily roots the device.
OK. Now I have to get a little more comfortable with terminal before I can do this thing.

Re: [ICS][4.0.4][5/23] Official IMM76K Update Thread for the VZW

I keep getting an error because I previously uninstalled google earth. The install fails because it can't find the files and I get an installation aborted message. I tried restoring the backup of the app through Titanium backup, but it still didn't fix it. I have a mac and can't find any way to extract the files from the factory image (I can only find how to do it on a pc). If someone could upload those two files I would GREATLY appreciate it and I think it would solve my problem with updating.

Well, considering that Google has one on its servers that's been soak testing for a month ... :)

Try installing this and see what that does for you?

I've seen several people that have had issues doing this. I can't afford to brick my phone , I need it.

The Nexus is very, very hard to brick.

I am unlocked and Unrooted. When I try the step to boot into clockwork recovery it says, "cannot load 'recovery'".
What am I doing wrong?

Re: [ICS][4.0.4][5/23] Official IMM76K Update Thread for the VZW

I got it. in the line of code in the tutorial it says, "fastboot boot recovery recovery-name.img"
In short, I was writing recovery twice.
I'm new to Nexus.

Unlocked and Rooted today, and installed the 4.0.4 update. WOW, that was so much easier than I was expecting! I was up and running in about an hour and a half, and most of that was waiting for backups and restores to run.

Glad I'll never have to wait for another update again!

EDIT: Doesn't seem like I can get root back now though, I ran through the same process I used to root it when I unlocked it. Is there a way to get back root on 4.0.4?

So I got all this stuff up and running but have a few questions.

Am I still rooted and how can I tell? (I still have the "Superuser" applet in my drawer.)

Should I remove the su.zip file in the root directory of the phone if I'm no longer rooted? Is there some cleanup I should be doing someplace?

Do I need to be rooted again to use Rom Manager? It's still installed it would seem.

Will I still get OTAs for like 4.0.5 currently or am I stuck now having to do all manual updates?

If the above is stuck can I use Wug's to go back and restore stock and then get the OTAs again or is this a permanent manual phone now?

I did a few backups but their now in the Clockwork folder on the phone. Can I move them off to the PC or do I need to keep them on the phone?

So far the phone seems to be running smooth. I have 4 bars of 4g now as opposed to 3 at home. Don't know if this is just display or better reception due to drivers. Switching between 4g and wifi is now fast enough that skype doesn't even go holo. However I've been able to verify that the calls are going out of their respective network so the swap is happening just really fast now.

I'm stoked I got this work thanks for all the guides, files, and comments that made it happen!

P.S. I bought an in app Touch recovery thing for $2 was that the right thing to buy? I'm not sure what that is I see a $6 Recovery as a separate app? Should I get that and can I still use it after the update?

Followed the guide to 4.04 IMM76K - worked like a charm! Unfort after using for several days 3G/4G/WiFi radio problems persist. Grey bars and "unable to connect to server" for several minutes this morning, this update was fairly useless. Also camera still mediocre. Now I have to decide if I wanna go through the painful VZW tech support route to swap em out - for three phones! Big disappointment for me, really didn't wanna become an enthusiast trolling message boards for fixes. :'(

So I have tried both ways and I can't get it to work. I seriously need a step by step with everything explained in english with no acronyms on this because I must be missing something.

I tried having Verizon switch mine out (after 5 nexus) and they said they'll give me $140 for the phone, take that off a Razr Maxx Full Retail and have me sign another two year contract. I told them to go to hell and walked out.

I hear speaking with reps over the phone get better luck.

See above for file to flash if you need root on 4.0.4.

CWM Touch is solid, you'll be fine with that. Try to wean yourself off using ROM Manager entirely tho and learn to navigate and use the recovery itself.

And no you are not permanently in any position. With this phone you can do anything, and it's fairly simple to fastboot flash the factory images and relock the bootloader, if you ever wanted to, which would let you take OTAs normally again. Just ask and we'll link you solid instructions :)
